both magicians meet the same fate as their beloved others. the brother who truly loved his wife, I believe was convicted of the murder and was hung, just like his true love who ended herself with a rope, also. Hugh's character didn't mind drowning, like his wife, because of how Micheal Cane's character desribed "drowning" as "going home" until the end and he told him he lied..

I would just say, Rupert (Jackman) did plan on Alfred (Bale) to be curious enough to want to know how it was done, and since it was the 100th and last show, Rupert counted on Alfred going down there and getting him framed for his murder. Kudos on guess that it was Alfred's twin brother.
