Spire of Secrets 1 | Subclasses, Aux Levels, Feats

I love announcing new projects on April 1st, so you can all secretly wonder whether or not it’s a prank. Never fear, this is totally real! (Or is it?)

We’re proud to officially announce our next hardcover book, Varro’s Spire of Secrets, a Mage Hand Press player’s handbook, with ten base classes, over a hundred different subclasses, a raft of magic items, variant rules, spells, and much more. It’s a stupidly ambitious project, built on over a half-decade of writing D&D 5e, and we think it’s going to change everything.

If you’re a loyal devotee of our content, you’ll recognize nearly everything in this book, but you’ll find some new bits and pieces, balance tweaks, and nice considerations that bring everything together. This month, we’re showing off a small sampling of what’s been cooking behind the scenes, and we’ll try to do this every couple of months so you can keep abreast of the book’s development.

(It’s worth mentioning that, while the early previews will be here, exclusively on Patreon, the final PDF won’t be coming here -- that’s going to land on Kickstarter.)

Do we have a final date for this book? This year, probably summer. I’m doing a literal spreadsheet to figure out how much sleep I’m allowed to get. Is there going to be a lot of other cool stuff we haven’t mentioned yet? Absolutely.

---

Below, we’ve got the first chunk of our subclasses, an early version of the equipment chapter, and two-thirds of the customization chapter. As you can see, the book is pushing 270 pages already!

Keep in mind that these are a snapshot of where the project is: the graphic design is a work in progress and several sections still need art. Each chapter is supposed to change header and margin colors and (because I knocked it out a few hours before posting this and am literally colorblind), I think the chosen colors really suck. Never-fear: we'll fix it!

What ammo does a Light Cannon use? Previously, it used cannonballs, but those aren't listed anywhere. Also, will exotic ammunition be making a comeback?

oway13

The exotic mastery feat is listed under equipment and I think it should be moved or duplicated to feats.

oway13

Ransom plot?

(It is not an elaborate prank)

Mage Hand Press

Good note! I meant to do resistance for that spell

Mage Hand Press

Quck thing, page 7 of the Spire Cusomization, Priest auxiliary level bonus cantrips, Bless is not a cantrip.

Josue Valle

Ben very nicely summarized all of my points! I'd like to confirm that "potentially" doing a softcover run is more like "almost definitely". It's just a questions of how many copies we print and how many people want a physical version

Mage Hand Press

I get that.

Donovan Lowell

Yeah. They've said there was too much confusion between it and wizard, on top of problematic cultural issues with the name and themes. They've said they like the channeler but are struggling with balancing some of its core features and that ultimately it's a gish, which they've already got pretty well thematically with the warmage. I think they're currently happy with the binder, but it's so huge and complex that they didn't want to try to stuff it into the book. They mentioned on the discord potentially doing a softcover print run of it as a stretch goal with the kickstarter.

Ben Fowler

It was discontinued? All together? That sucks. I kinda liked it.

Donovan Lowell

I know the Shugenja was discontinued, and the Binder is so complicated its almost a perpetual WIP. Not sure about the Channeler tho

Joseph Blanc

This looks like it's going to be super fun!!! I know it's a while off, but I'm already excited for the Kickstarter!

PucThePlayful

It looks amazing. Definitely gonna back this. Only one question: no Shugenja, Channeler, or Binder?

Donovan Lowell

Nice, going to be happy to slide this book into my shelf next to Dark Matter.

Josue Valle

I will be very sad if this is an elaborate prank.

Larry Eger

I'm grinning ear to ear reading this! Now, how do I convince my entire party to buy a copy?

Joseph Blanc

1000 Times YES!!!

Patrick Rooney

I am absolutely excited to add this book to my collection!
