My biggest question at this point is, um, how are you planning to pay for Yale, Lor? Does Rory have a full free ride or something? I doubt it. Secondly, even if that's not an issue, Lorelai could definitely have done this better - for one thing, wait till after Rory graduates, so you'd be putting a bow on the Chilton years with the repayment. And of course anticipate Emily's reaction, and find a way to contain that. Unfortunately Lorelai often just wants to do what she wants to do when she wants to do it. Her poor impulse control as a teenager has never fully gone away.

That is the beauty of this show, that we can often see both sides of an argument.

My problem with Emily is she’s a great character but a terrible human being. You’re right, it wasn’t a loan and she didn’t want to be paid back. It was a quid pro quo. In return for paying for Chilton, she got to force her daughter into having a relationship with her that Lorelai didn’t want. Lorelai doesn’t want to be indebted to them and doesn’t want to be forced to spend time with them and the only way she was going to get out of those dinners was paying back the money. And I disagree that there was a better way to bring it up with Emily. She would’ve had that same reaction no matter how reasonably or calmly Lorelai put it. Emily does want to be a closer family, but refuses to admit any fault in why Lorelai doesn’t want that. Instead of doing some introspection on why her daughter doesn’t want a relationship with her, Emily has to blackmail her into having a relationship with her and then wonders why she doesn’t have a relationship with her. Again, fascinating character, but she’s just awful. I’m 100% with Lorelai on this one.

That's true; I want to know what Michel bought Lorelai to up his ante.

I can understand where Lorelai was coming from for sure but I think one thing that she didn't really consider is how Rory feels about the Friday dinners. If I'm Rory and I finally get to have a close relationship with my grandparents after my whole life of not being close to them and now my mom just put that in jeopardy I would be disappointed too.
I did find it a bit odd that we didn't get one more scene of the Michel subplot. It was a funny bit but I find that Gilmore Girls will often have a more comedic plotline that just doesn't really conclude in the episode. Maybe it's just my mind that wants a neat little bow on everything but it felt like the bit could have gone one step further. I'm mostly nitpicking though this episode was great.
