FYI - Don't subscribe to Patreon via Apple iOS

I just want to spread the word on this topic, so if you're already aware, please excuse the intrusion. I know some of you probably have no idea, even though these Apple fees have been in place since November 2024.

So imagine that you're scrolling through your phone late at night on the Patreon App, and you come across a new creator's page and think, "Wow this is cool, I'm gonna subscribe!" That's fantastic, and I'm sure that creator is really going to appreciate your support. BUT WAIT!!!

Did you know that when you subscribe via the iOS App, not only does Apple tack on a 30% surcharge to the normal subscription price, but they also hold those funds in escrow for 75 days before the creator receives them? 75 DAYS! So the $20 tier you joined ends up costing you $26 because it's considered an "in-app purchase" subject to App Store fees, and the creator won't even see their $20 share (minus normal Patreon fees) for the next 2 1/2 months!

So if you're ever tempted to join via the Patreon App, please just take 5 seconds to switch to the browser on your device instead and sign up via the web. Why hand over an extra 30% to Apple? Plus the creator that you're supporting will receive your pledged funds immediately.

But, what if you've already made the mistake of pledging to someone via the App Store? You can fix it! You should definitely go right now and cancel that subscription. Then go to the web browser and simply re-subscribe, and continue showing your support to that awesome creator, and give the middle finger to Apple!

(FYI - Android terms are much more civil, they only hold funds for 7 days, and they don't charge you the 30% fee like Apple does.)
