Emily and Steve had barely just started dating before his tragic accident, which left him paralyzed and unable to speak. She didn't even like him all that much, but apparently he'd told his family that he had a fiance, and when they arrived to see him in the hospital they assumed the two were madly in love. Steve's wealthy father pulled her aside at one point and told Emily that he'd never thought Steve would find someone to love him, and that as long as she stayed with him, she would never want for anything again.
So now, Emily lives in mini-mansion in Manhattan, all her bills paid by Steve's family trust, and Steve receives 24/7 nursing care. Their relationship is a total joke, and she treats him more like a pet or a child than a man, which he wasn't much of before the accident, to be honest. At least now she doesn't have to pretend to love him, it's not like he can do anything about it anyway!
