I'm not sure how they got there, but I think they indicate which generation they are. Mother has 3, daughter has 4, and the egg has 5. Safe to assume the next egg will have 6.

I honestly love the fact that you put meaning into it but also leave it up to interpretation. The dots on the neck did not go unnoticed but what do they mean and how did they get there? That's the real question and that's what makes true horror in my opinion. Leaving things unanswered and up to the imagination

Oh my gosh that actually makes way more sense than what I thought was happening. I confused the 4 dots and then the 3 dots to both be on the mom. Like it was a countdown and they each have this small lifespan. But what you said is way better.

But who was the first dot? And who raised the first dot. Also, I like the idea of the story being established and the character knowing that the next dot will come, but when they send their mother out to sea, no egg ever arrives. Then they will have to venture out into the beyond.

What did her mom tell her to do? It looks like she was going outside to fish (the hat, net, and bucket) and was surprised by the egg. I’m guessing she didn’t get the truth.
