~~Chapter 31: Forgiveness is a virtue~~
.
Returning from his small meeting with the former Malfoy, Harry swiftly went straight towards the owlery. It was a place that he had visited a lot in his starting days as an Innovator. The sudden popularity coupled with lack of means of communication helped him gain an audience with the school owls that resided here.
It was this regular trip to the owlery that gave him the idea to create âThe Mail-checkâ boxes. After that, Dobby and Sirius came into his life, which helped him reduce the mail work to a bare minimum of two-three letters a day since Sirius took care of most of his mails while Dobby removed the fanmail that he received.
Inside the owlery, he ignored the pungent smell and focused on finding a common barn owl that no one would suspect. He saw a brown feathered one that was near the door and quickly tied the letter to it.
âGive this to Draco Malfoy of the Slytherin house, alright?â Harry asked the owl and received an affirming hoot in return.
âThis will reach that idiot tomorrow morning during breakfast, which means heâll be ready by dinner time tomorrow,â Harry thought as he moved out of the smelly building, and took a route towards another one that had something he wanted.
When he entered the Hospital wing, he was surprised to see that his brother had been shifted from his previous location on the first floorâs secluded corner to the ground floorâs main hall. He didnât know who did this or why, but presumed that maybe it was done because Alan didnât need to be kept tied down to a bed anymore.
The other occupants of the hall were either sleeping or having a conversation with their friends, so they didnât give Harryâs arrival more than a cursory glance. Even Alan was talking with his two friends, Ron and Hermione, the trio that had been once called âThe Golden Trio' by Hogwarts population.
There was someone else in the hall that Harry wanted to meet, but she was currently entertaining her friend and someone who looked like a younger version of herself. Their eyes met, and Harry couldnât help but smile at the way Daphneâs lips twitched a bit before she controlled herself.
Some commotion from Alanâs bed stopped everyone and they watched the youngest male Weasley shout as he glared at Alan. The anger wasnât new to anyone in that room as they knew that Ronald Weasley had issues controlling his temper, but it was quite surprising to see the boy angry at his so-called best friend, Alandale Potter.
âI donât know what has happened to you, Alan. But you mark my words, itâs definitely changing you and not for the better!â Weasley shouted at Alan, âI came to meet you because you had surprisingly disappeared, and this is how you treat your only friend?â
âRon, I didnât mean it likeââ
âNO! NO NEED TO SAY ANYTHING NOW!â Ron got up from his chair so fast that it fell back on the floor with a loud thump. âWe came to meet you after you disappeared for a bloody month! And this is what you have to say to me?! What a friend you have been, Potter!â
The commotion caused by the two fourth years was enough to get Madam Pomfreyâs attention who immediately intervened and promptly kicked the redhead out of the hospital wing, going as far as to deduct points and give him a detention. Who knew the school nurse had such power? But it made sense since she was also a staff member who taught medicine to interested people in their seventh years.
Hermione apologized on her friendâs behalf before she gave Alan a quick hug and departed from the wing. Probably in search of the youngest male Weasley.
After Hermioneâs departure, things swiftly returned to how they were and the dull sound of hushed conversations reappeared in the hall of the Hospital wing.
Harry took this moment to approach his brotherâs bed who was getting another check-up by Madam Pomfrey to see whether Weasleyâs outburst had any detrimental effect on his health or not.
âYou came.â Alan smiled a bit. âThe way you had left that day, I wasnât sure youâd return.â
âI had promised, and I always keep my promises,â Harry said as he sat on the bedside chair. âMadam Pomfrey, can we please have some privacy? This is a private conversation.â
Pomfrey frowned a bit before she gave a nod. âYou can, but Alan has already had enough visitors, so I want you two to be done in a few minutes. You can return later in the evening, or maybe wait till Wednesday because he will be discharged by then.â
Harry nodded, and flicked his wand to create a privacy bubble around Alanâs bed when the nurse left. The two boys didnât say anything for some time, content just looking at each other.
This might be the first time when the Potter brothers were about to hold a proper conversation that wouldnât have the elder Potter ignoring or straightaway cursing the younger one, while said younger one shouted and acted like a prat.
âSo⊠how are you?â
âI think I should be the one asking you that.â Harry frowned. âBut, to answer you, I am good. Feel better since I just got a clean check from the health guild and got those Runes of Potentia removed.â
âThey are those weird things that cause your eyes to glow, right?â Alan asked, âAnd then, those silver vines cover your arms and legs. I think I remember seeing them become golden too, once.â
âThey used to be in three levels and each level triggered a whole set of⊠you know what? Nevermind that. Madam Pomfrey said that I donât have much time and I would much rather get the main topics cleared out first. However, I am a bit curious as to how you have been so civil towards me ever since you woke up.â
âLike I told you before, Harry, I donât know how long I was in my mindscape. Time works differently there, I think.â Alan frowned a bit before he continued, âBut I had nothing else to do other than watch my memories, and in almost all of them, I saw what an utter prat I had been. Making funny poses, giving interviews just for popularity when I didnât even know shit about the actual thing⊠you get what I mean?â
âA product of your nurture.â Harry nodded.
âWhat?â
âYou got molded the way others wanted to see you, it happens quite a lot actually,â the Innovator answered, âIn fact, the Japanese believe that each person has three masks: First one is their public mask â the one that they show everyone, and the way they behave in public. Second one is your family mask â thatâs how you behave with everyone who is close to you. Lastly, the third one is your private mask â the face that no one other than you knows about.â
They were silent for sometime before Alan released a deep breath and did the unthinkable.
He hugged Harry.
The Innovatorâs first instinct was to slam a banishing hex on the boy, to throw the boy into the far wall. Injuries be damned! But then, he felt something wet on his shoulders and the younger boy sniffled.
âI am sorry,â the whispered words meant more than anything to the shocked Innovator. âI am sorry for being like that, Harry. I will understand if you donât forget or forgive, you did say that you were never good with doing that. Still, if possible, I would like to start things from scratch.â
âAlandaleââ
âYou donât have to answer me right away, Harry.â Alan released the surprised boy. âTake your time. Donât feel pressured into this. I donât want you to feel responsible for anything related to me anymore. You have already done more than what I would expect from a guy who I had treated the way I did. Thanks for all the times you saved my life.â
Alan hesitated and added, âYou are the best brother that I needed but never deserved.â
Harry didnât say anything, he just looked at the boyâs teary face and gave a single nod. âI wonât say that forgive and forget are my things, Alan, you just said that. So, donât expect things to suddenly be butter between us, but Iâll try my best to actually be a brother rather than just a future Lord of our houses whose sole job is to keep you alive.â
After Alan wiped his tears and got his haywire emotions under control, he looked at Harry again. The Innovatorâs posture was more relaxed and a bit more laid back in the chair than when he had entered the wing. âItâs not much⊠but itâs an improvement,â Alan thought with a small smile.
âSo, do you still want to talk about that memory or do you want to rest now?â Harry asked the boy but before he couldâve answered their privacy was intruded by the mediwitch.
âI think I have already said what I wanted to say to you the most.â The Boy-Who-Lived nodded. âI do want a few answers, there are many things about our childhood that are still uncleared⊠but they can wait for now.â
âAlright, rest of the talk can wait till you are will enough.â Harry stood from his chair. âI will see you later then.â
âHarry! Wait!â Alan stopped his brother, âI think thereâs something else that you should do before you leave.â
âWhat?â
âThereâs someone else who you should visit while you are here,â Alan said with a small smile and pointed towards the bed that was in the far corner. Harry was a bit surprised when his brother pointed at none other than Daphne.
âYou want me to meet her?â
Alan nodded. âHermione and Ron heard things about what had happened in Hogsmeade after the battle and they told me. Thereâs also the fact that you have only gone to Hogsmeade once, and that was with her. Alsoââ
âThat was work related,â Harry interrupted but was immediately shushed.
âOh yeah⊠sure,â Alan said in a way that said he didnât believe it at all. âAnyways, itâs up to you. Still, I want you to meet her, itâs painfully obvious that she likes you and the way you have not cursed me or straightaway left, tells me that you do have some feelings for her. So, why not act on those?â
His brotherâs words strangely enough reminded him of his talk with the Artelean commander of Death who had trained him for five-and-a-half years in the Realm of Death. Both of them had almost said the same things, and even Death itself had said something similar.
âWhen did you of all people become an expert in relationships?â Harry gave a small smile. âLast I remember you were the block-headed idiot who wasnât liked by anyone of the opposite sex.â
âOi! No need to get personal there,â Alan cried but there wasnât any real barb in his words. âAnyways, this is about you, big guy, not me. Are you going to meet her or not?â
Harry thought about the words as he contemplated the implications of such an action. Was he really ready to accept others in his life? He had started accepting Blaise, and even Cho as well as Fleur, but they werenât Daphne. They were his friends. Close, yes, but friends.
They were not someone who was intimately attached with him, they were not the people who expected him to break the walls that he had built around himself for almost a decade. But these were trivial issues since the two groups could be merged and placed in the same category of people that he wanted to protect.
What he really wanted to know were answers to an entirely different set of questions. And these werenât too many, more like just three questions that he wanted to know.
Would The Council use her against him like it used his mother? If that happens, will he be able to protect the one girl that he would want a future with? And most of all⊠did a monster like him deserve a future with someone like her?
âWhat are you thinking so hard about?â Alan interrupted his thoughts. âItâs a simple decision, if you want to do it then just go there, take the seat and talk with her. If you donât, then the doors are still open, and she wonât know that we had this conversation.â
âYou donât know how this would impact her safety, Alan.â Harry sighed. âThereâs a reason why I choose to keep everyone at bay, and I donât know what would happen if I stopped doing that now.â
âWill this⊠reason of yours stop her from coming closer to you?â Alan asked the boy and saw him deny that with a shake of his head. âThen, you already know the answer. Just stop being an idiot like I did. You are just afraid of something that doesnât exist. I know the feeling, I was like you too. Fear is something that I know better than you, Harry. And this is just that: Fear.â
âYou were afraid of something?â Harry asked.
âNot something but someone.â Alan smiled. âI was afraid of you, I have always been afraid of you in one way or another, but that stopped when I watched the memories and saw that all you did was protect me whenever I got struck. That gave me enough courage to apologize to you today. And since one Potter received enough courage to change, I want the other one to do the same.â
Harry wasnât surprised by his brotherâs confession, it was a calculated probability on his part that his brother might be a bit afraid of him. Especially after their fiasco in his second year when he had sued Alan for his attempts to defame him. That hadnât ended well for the younger Potter and since then their differences never stopped.
âBut now we are talking like actual brothers⊠something that had never been possible before.â Harry thought. âWell⊠itâs not like others havenât seen it anyways, and if the Council really started to use my people against me again, then I would just have to be strong enough to protect them.â
âAlright,â Harry nodded. âI wonât say that I am ready for a relationship right now, not with everything thatâs going around us at the moment, but I will give it my best.â
âI donât think you need to do anything else either,â Alan shrugged, âAnd since she already likes you, who knows you might become a real couple soon. At least she is hot, you could do a lot worse in that department.â
âRepeating myself again, when did you become a genius in matters related to girls?â Harry smirked.
âHey, I still donât understand them,â his brother admitted sheepishly, grinning. âBut I had heard the boys in my dorm discuss them, and Daphne Greengrass is a hot topic. Perfect ten in my opinion.â
Harry just shook his head. âAlright. Thatâs enough about categorizing her, I don't want you to do that ever again, understood?â
âAlready acting like a jealous boyfriend, are we?â Alan asked cheekily but stopped when he saw Harryâs eyes glow green.
âAlright! alright! Just kidding! No need to get all antsy⊠sheesh!â He gave another grin. âNow, go away. Talk to her and see where it takes you, alright?â
Harry chuckled as he removed the privacy bubble around the redheadâs bed. The two were surprised to see almost everyone in the hospital wing looking at them as if they were aliens.
âWhat?!â
That single syllable from Harry was strong enough to get everyone back to their own devices and leave the Potter brothers for now. The two knew that rumors of their supposed reunion would soon fill the Hogwarts rumor mill, but none of them cared about it. Alan simply waved to his brother who went towards the corner bed occupied by Daphne, Tracey and Astoria.
â
â...and then Vector gave us a three foot long essay on the numerical equations behind the tenth principle of the infinite number theorem. Can you believe it, Daph? THREE FOOT LONG ESSAY!â Astoria whined.
âThatâs nothing compared to what she makes me do, yâknow.â Tracey chuckled. âDonât give me that look, little Greengrass, this is your third year just wait till you reach your own OWL year.â
âHeh, I will be super smart by that time,â Tori replied. âVector says I have a talent of identifying the mistakes in the equations faster than anyone else she had seen, I bet even Potter couldnât beat me when he was my age.â
âI am sure of that too.â
âI know, right?!â Tori turned towards the new voice with a grin. âBut donât tell that toââ She stopped when she realized that the new voice that had answered her was none other than Harry Potter himself.
âI- I mean⊠uhâŠâ She looked towards Alandaleâs bed in the direction of the chair that was empty now. Then, she looked towards her sister who was suppressing her smirk and Tracey who was openly giggling.
She punched Tracey in the arm.
âOW! OW!â Tracey cried, âThat hurt! You little violent freak!â
âAs it should!â Tori glared at her, âWhy didnât you tell me that he was listening?!â
In response, Tracey did the mature thing and stuck her tongue out before she got up from her seat so that she could dodge another attack at her physical self.
Daphne chuckled when she saw the altercation between her best friend and her sister. Her eyes fell on Harry who stood there with an awkward expression of wanting and not wanting to be there at the same time. She knew that the boy was here to talk with her, something she wanted to do herself, but their company wouldn't allow that to happen.
âAlright you two. Thatâs enough.â Daphne stopped the ongoing banter between the two girls. âNow, I think Harry and I would like to talk about a few things â and no, Astoria, you arenât going to listen. It's private.â
Astoria gave her trademark pout that she had been taught by Daphne to use on their father when they wanted something. Secretly, she knew that her pout and puppy-dog eyes combo was better than Daphneâs because she was cuter than her elder sister but she never said it out loud. That weapon is always saved for the worst.
âYou do know that I was the one who taught you the trick, donât you?â Daphne chuckled. âIt doesnât work on me. Now get out.â
âBut DaphâŠâ
âTracey, can you please help this brat out?â Daphne asked her friend, interrupting Astoriaâs tantrum. The auburn-haired girl didnât need to be asked twice as she pulled the younger Greengrass sister away from the bed.
Before leaving Astoria went to stand in front of Harry and glared at him. âI donât care whether you are the Dragon Slayer or you fought and defeated You-Know-Who. If I find that you are hurting my sister, then I will find you and I will make you pay for it. Believe it!â
Harry couldnât help but smile at the little girl threatening him like that, still he raised his hands in surrender and said, âAlright, little Greengrassââ
âDonât call me that!â
â âI wonât hurt your sister. I promise.â
âGood! And you better remember that.â Astoria narrowed her eyes on him. âOut of everyone, only I have the right to hurt her. Understood?â
The duo ignored Daphneâs indignant âHEY!â and Tracey had to do her best to not laugh out loud as she pulled Astoria away so that Harry and Daphne could finally get the privacy that they wanted.
âWonât you sit?â Daphne asked him softly when she saw that he didnât move and kept standing, even after the girls had left.
Harry took the offered seat and â out of habit â created a privacy bubble around Daphneâs bed. He didnât want his personal life to become a talk of the school, one change after another as well as the whole fiasco with Voldemort was enough as it is.
âSoâŠâ
âSoâŠâŠâ
Daphne internally smiled when she saw how awkward the usually straightforward Ravenclaw was being. She was pleased with this because this meant that her worries regarding Harryâs behavior change during the time he was away was proven wrong.
He was still the same boy that she had last met in the broom closet, if a bit more receptive to her gestures. Something that she wasnât going to complain about.
âHow are you?â Harry broke the silence that had ensued.
âBeen better.â She shrugged. âMy right side hurts a bit, Pomfrey says itâd take me three more days to heal completely.â
âI see. Well, I can speed up the process if you want?â He asked her. âI mean, my magic. I have too much of it, so I can give a small amount to you and it will speed up your healing process.â
Daphne smiled but she shook her head, âIâm good, but enough about me. How are you? Did the guild work you were going for, finish? Or will you be going again?â
Harry thought back to their last conversation when he had been pulled in the broom closet, he remembered telling her that he wouldnât be there during the Yule Ball because he was going for some guild work.
That guild work was training in the Realm of Death for seven years. Quite a long time for him, but merely a month-and-a-half for her.
âYeah, itâs over now,â Harry told her and saw her smile. âAlthough, I have been called by the guild again, but this time it'd probably be done in a day or two. So, nothing big.â
âAnd then?â She asked him, âWhat about after that? Will you stay here or will you go back again?â
The Innovator thought about the innocent question for some time before he sighed. âI donât know. If they need me again, I will be asked to join the forces. But, if they donât, then I wonât go on my own.â
âYou are lying.â Daphne smirked.
âAnd you can tell?â
âIf itâs anyone who can tell that, itâs me.â Daphne smiled impishly before her eyes narrowed a bit, âAnd I hope you keep it that way, Mr. Ladies Charmer.â
âUhh⊠Ladies charmer? Really? Thatâs corny, cringeworthy and a straight lie.â
âWell, not the way I see it, but I donât want to give you a big head, so I wonât say anything else.â She smirked. âSo, tell me about this work of yours, what did you do while you were away?â
âI learned under an alien commander in an entirely different world who taught me how to kill, how to torture, the thin line between just death and sadism, information extortion and many more.â Harry thought but he just shrugged. âThey taught me how to fight, and a few more useful things.â
âLike flying?â
â...yes, like flying.â Harry agreed.
âThat was so cool! Can you teach that to me? Please? I promise I wonât tell anyone.â Daphne made her puppy dog eyes but Harry shook his head in denial.
âI am under a vow to never teach anyone anything that I learned there.â Harry gave a smug smirk. âSo if you want to fly, get your broom and go out on the Quidditch pitch.â
Daphne made a face at that. It was a well known fact to Harry that she didnât like brooms at all, and it wasnât because she was bad at flying. No! She loved flying! But brooms? Those infernals twigs were a cause for her childhood trauma. Something that forced her to never ride a broom ever again.
It was funny how her younger sister Astoria took lessons from Daphneâs mistake in an absolutely opposite manner and instead of quitting flying on the broom, she became a better rider. So much so that she was a chaser on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team, while her sister didnât even go to quidditch matches anymore.
âYou know that hug you gave me⊠everyoneâs talking about it,â Harry told her. âEven Alan â the guy who wasnât here for a month â knows about it.â
âYeah, Tori and Tracey told me about it. Even my common room was divided on that topic.â Daphne shrugged. âBut I donât care, I had just seen you after so long, I couldnât care less about what people saw in me or what they wanted. I know my dad loves you like his son, mom is a fan of your work, and Tori is a brat, but even she knows that I like you, I donât care about othersâ opinion.â
âWhat about me?â Harry asked her with a faux sneer. âYou never asked for my opinion.â
âHave I ever asked you about anything that made sense?â Daphne bit back, âWe have been in this together since that night you gave me free ice cream. Now, suffer!â
Harry couldnât help but smile at the memory that she had unlocked.
It was from their first year, he had just taken his first steps into innovation because the âEn-Lightningâ fashion series from Madam Malkinâs had become popular overnight. Unfortunately, he didnât have anyone who he couldâve shared his first moment of happiness with.
Therefore, he had decided to celebrate it alone in the Hogwarts kitchen at night. He had just asked the house-elves for a bowl of his favorite ice cream âthe Bluebells â which he had created in Florean Fortesqueâs shop when he saw Daphne enter the kitchen too.
The girl had been crying because she was homesick, she was worried that her daddy wonât be able to do his work alone, or her mom wonât be able to tend to her garden without her help. Most of all, she missed her little sister Astoria whom she hadnât seen or heard from for the last four months.
That was the first time when they had talked at Hogwarts, and Harry had shared his ice cream with her. He felt elated when he learned that it was her favorite flavor ever since she tasted it at Floreanâs shop when they had first met.
That night, they hadnât talked a lot, but, for some reason, the silence had been as comforting as their company.
âI still like bluebells, you know.â Daphne broke through his reverie.
âHmm?â
âYou were thinking about it too, werenât you?â Daphne smiled. âIt was the first time I learned something about you, you were more open back then. And more easy to talk to. I didnât need to use surprise attacks to corner you.â She giggled.
âAnd stupider too,â Harry piped in.
âOh I donât know about that⊠itâs debatable that you are still stupid.â
âHey! Mind I remind you who's the Innovator here?â He smirked. âI think I should try asking Astoria out, we seem to have a common ground for solving arithmancy equations.â
âOh you have a lot more in common than just being nerds,â Daphne nodded. âBoth of you are equally insufferable, knuckleheaded, straight forward, no filter⊠and always on my mind.â
âThat last one sounded more like a forcefully added corny line.â Harry smirked at her. âYou can try doing better than that, Daphne.â
âOf course, youâd think about it like that.â She sighed. âWhat more could I expect from a guy who took four years to finally start talking? Should I expect your confession of love by our thirties? And maybe a kid by the time we are fifty?â
âWait! You are going too fast.â Harryâs eyes widened. âAnd what confession of love?!â
âSEE! THIRTIES!!â Daphne cried before both of them started chuckling.
After a few minutes, it was Harry who broke the comfortable silence that had fallen, âThanks, Daphne.â
âHmm?â Daphne raised her eyebrow, âThanks? For what?â
âFor being there for me whenever I needed someone the most. Every year, at the yearâs end, you have been there for me. And, even then, I always pushed you away.â Harry sighed, âI am sorry for being a grade A asshole.â
âHarry...? Did something happen while you were gone?â She asked him as she clasped his hand. âYou know you can tell me about it, right?â
He nodded. He knew that he could, in fact if he had to narrow down the people with whom he could share almost everything, Daphne would probably be the first one. Even Sirius and Blaise didnât know as much about him as she did. She had been there for him every time he needed some company, and during those times they had talked a lot.
âI canât tell you everything, wait â listen first!â He stopped her. âI canât tell you everything right now, I will tell you later, I promise. But, for now, just know that you have saved my life. There was a time when I was about to die, and at that moment, I felt all alone. I was worried I wouldn't be able to finish the task and that everyone would die. But then, as always, you found me.â
He smiled, âYour memories found me, and we had a talk. Your words once again gave me enough strength to fight back and win. So, itâs all because of you that I am standing here today.â
âOr I wouldnât have survived The Tandavam at allâŠâ He thought before he shook his head. âTherefore, thanks for being there for me. And sorry for being an asshole to you. My master showed me how much of an idiot I had been.â
âYou werenât that bad.â Daphne squeezed his hand comfortingly. âI knew that you were doing all that just to get away from me, and, for some reason, it motivated me more because I had already seen the happy guy you could be. So it always confused me why you decided to push everyone away instead.â
âStill, if it helps you, I do accept your apology.â She smiled when he sighed in relief, but then a thought crossed her mind which made her grin impishly. Something that Harry had noted.
âWhat?â
âWho said you could get scot-free?â She grinned. âEven if it was for some grand reason, you were, as you said, an asshole.â
âBut you just accepted my apology!â He cried.
âUh yeah⊠whatever, now I want you to do something if you want me to truly accept it.â She smirked at him. âOr your apology will forever be a receiver of half-hearted acceptance.â
Harry shook his head at the stupidity but he decided that it was better to continue it. âAlright. What do you want me to do?â
âI want a dance,â she announced.
â...â
â......â
â....What?â Harry blinked. âYou couldâve asked for anything! Literally anything that you liked, and you want a dance?â
âAnd Iâd like a dance.â Daphne grinned. âAnd not just any dance, a good ball dance.â
âThat doesnât make any difference.â He shook his head at the absurd situation. âWhen you couldâve asked for anything, why would you even want a dance in the first place?â
âThat's because you made me miss the one I had.â She poked his arm. âThe Yule Ball, it was such a good time, but I didnât have a partner, and I missed the dance. So, since youâre offering, I want a ball dance with you.â
Harry thought about it for some time before he sighed and smiled, there was no way he could ever understand how a girlâs mind worked. Well, he did give her the free choice so it was time to fulfill her wish.
âAlright, Daphne.â He agreed. âPersonally I donât know any place that would host a ball dance right now, but I think Sirius would know. I will ask him to make a reservation for us so thatââ
âNo-no-no,â she denied. âNo need for that. I will arrange all of it, you just need to bring yourself, and a little bit of faith in my abilities. Oh and dress up well, not like our first outing where I had to select clothes for you.â She chuckled.
They talked some more before Harry noted that it was time for dinner, and therefore after bidding her goodbye he canceled the privacy bubble before he left the Hospital wing.

Exactly what I tried to show here. That Daphne has been balancing him since the time they met, they complemented each other and yet Harry had to leave her repeatedly because of the threat of The Council and the possibility of history repeating itself.
