New grass shading

What’s really neat about geometrical grass is that its shading might be much more detailed. Sure billboards could have some sort of normal map, but at their core it still looked like a billboard. Notice how now grass casts shadows on grass and it doesn’t look weird.

Geometrical grass could be cut too, might be helpful to create tidier appearance:

Also, now cars not only deform, but also tilt grass when passing by:

There is still some work to do (mainly with per-track settings and local adjustments — old system was just way too inconvenient to deal with), but if you’re interested, you can compare performance with this build (for now, adjustments are disabled completely).

I’m still not all that happy with the way it looks, but it’s way better than that mess, I think:

Sorry to hear it, I think I’ll try and remake it one more time a bit later. Not quite sure how it could work… But maybe you could try 0.1.31 and see if it’s any better?

Very sorry about that, I’ll do better in the future. Got stuck working on multi-channeled emissives. At least now we’ll get proper indicators for all sorts of cars without editing models

Thank-you Josh. I am trying to make the grass that is high with deformations. Anyone know the settings to accomplish this? ;-) or is this determined by the applicable texture.

Where is this shot from? Which track and section? Just curious if I was to test with the grass feature.

I've tested on Spa with Nissan GT-R GT3. I think that grass height is better now, but honestly I don't like too much how grass is looking. I preferred as it looks before. It seems less dense than before and less realistic. I guess something is wrong with my configuration! BTW, sand particles are looking good! ;-)

Thanks for the reply Ilja. I mistakenly thought that subscribers to your Patreon got preview builds a little earlier, but if that's not the case, I'll just hold my breath and patiently wait the next update. Really looking forward to whatever you've got coming next, as always!

Hi, and thank you so much! I’ll add something so proper notifications will work, however builds will still be often released as before, I don’t think I’ll be able to prepare a preview build in some cases (unless there is some new feature in development, like here, and it takes longer than usual). To be honest, I was planning to release an update a day after this post, but then got really stuck with new headlights. There are now, like, five different ways to set emissives already 😅 (a bit of a preview of setting them up: https://gfycat.com/deficientfondhorseshoecrab). I think I’ll release it as it is and then keep working on it.

it appears really good but only from first person view and car cameras, but when you switch to TV cameras the grass looks too big.

Thank you very much for the test build. I love the new grass, the volume and how it works. I was checking how it moves when passing cars and I've only seen "something" that didn't convince me. The grass when returning to its original position, perhaps makes it very fast. A slower movement would make it more natural.

Oh wow, early access! That's much appreciated. I was nervous looking at how much better it is visually, but it runs smooth as butter on my system. Deformation is also much more noticeable than it was before, overall I'm much preferring this over the initial implementation!
