ANIMT - Chapter 59. Souvenir

I Got An Extra Six Months of Life Expectancy, And Now It’s My Time

The next person on my farewell tour was Umetaro-san.

He was in his dormitory office with the headmaster, Sakura Sakuranomiya. When I appeared and called out to him, he replied, “Is that Mitsuba-chan?” At first, the headmaster seemed to be confused by Umetaro speaking to no one.

Pondering for a second, I recalled that this magic allowed me to meet the people I pictured in my mind. It was no wonder the headmaster couldn’t see me. This magic was reminiscent of the magic I used when sending a love letter to Kitora. After all, the basis of magic was the power of will and imagination.

Recalling how I sent that love letter of sorts to Kitora, I focused on making myself visible to the occupants of the room.

But after telling the headmaster I had died and had come to say goodbye to Umetaro-san, I wasn’t expecting her to suddenly start hugging me.

Umetaro’s eyes, which were full of love for her, were tinged faintly red.

After coming to terms with my feelings for Kitora, I was able to take a guess why these two were together in Umetaro’s office at this time of the day.

“I’m glad I was able to attend this high school. I even made two precious friends, even if it was only for a year.” I said to the headmaster, who had started crying.

Moving over to her and stroking her back gently to comfort her, Umetaro said, “I’m really glad I met Mitsuba-chan,” as he smiled gently with his slightly redeemed eyes.

I guess me showing such a pitiful face can’t be helped in such circumstances. After all, I’ve always had a soft spot for Umetaro-san.

“But I am glad to see Umetaro with the headmaster, just like you mentioned during our last tea party. I hope that you and the headmaster will continue to watch over the students.”

After saying goodbye to Umetaro and the headmaster, I went to see my family next.

I was surprised because I wasn’t used to this mysterious magical phenomenon.

Thanking my father, who looked a little worn out from raising me, I took a moment to warn him about his habit of getting too into his hobbies and collecting everything.

To my mother, sobbing with swollen eyelids, I could say what I had always wanted to say: “Thank you for giving me a wonderful name.”

My younger brother and sister, who were in pajamas and had just gone to bed, asked with innocent faces, “Sister, when will you be back?” I was so choked up at this that I could not respond and just hugged them.

My home felt very nostalgic after being away for so long. Still, it was the most comfortable place in the world.

Then I went to my best friend Kaede-chan’s place, where I think I saw her cry for the first time in our long relationship.

“I’m sorry we couldn’t see the fireworks together this year,” I said.

“Don’t apologize for that, you idiot!” She said before punching me on the cheek. Her words and actions seemed very like the usual Kae-chan, and that made me very relieved for some reason.

Also, what did Kae-chan do during her summer vacation? I was aware that we were both keeping secrets, and now that I had shared mine, I felt it was only fair to hear hers.

… I didn’t realize that Kae-chan’s secret was so big though! She was the author of the book series that Kokomi enjoyed so much.

To be honest, I really am blessed to have such high-spec friends.

----With mixed feelings, I said “Thank you” and “Goodbye” to the important people in my life, just as I wanted to.

I was happy to know that everyone was thinking of me, but at the same time, I felt sad and lonely. These feelings were hard to express… But I was really happy to see them again at the end of my life.

There were many more people I would have liked to have met, but my time to say goodbye was limited.

Leaving him to the very end, I decided to visit my most beloved friend.

Thinking of him, I thought I would appear in his room at the dormitory, but I found myself appearing near the garbage area next to the training building.

He was standing in front of the largest tree in the area. Unlike usual, he was not asleep perched on his favorite tree.

It had stopped snowing completely, and he just stood there, doing nothing but soaking up the moonlight.

His forlorn figure made it seem like he was waiting for someone.

I called out his name, “Kitora,” and it felt like the air quivered in anticipation.
