(From the digital “sketchbook”: some goofy, quasi-abstract, outrageously-oversized Allie sketches...yes, they’re very silly, hehe)
My favorite way to compose sketch ideas is to begin with thumbnail sketches—extremely small, low-res sketches—because that way it’s easier for me to get my head around the overall image without getting hung up on details (which can come later).
It’s a good way to quickly throw together a stick-figure pose, check your proportions, and to get a sense of composition. I’ll fill up a PSD file with dozens of thumbnails as I come up with them, and come back to harvest a few of them later to turn them into a more detailed sketch or a finished piece (or just come back and add a few more).
Individually, though, this is basically what they look like at first: blurry, super-simplified (and maybe hard for others to make out), but concise and ready to unravel into greater detail since the basic elements are in place—which I think is crucial for making the image fun and easier to work with down the line.
