Its interesting the lighter skin (mixed race black people, mother's that were raped by their "masters") were treated better. I think slavery had a long term effect on colorism. Its the reason me (a black woman) has an Irish last name, and that I am more on the lighter skin side. I did some research into my family history turns out we came from Irish slave owners, slaves took their owners names back in the day. So yes you are correct some slaves got preferential treatment. I think it was a control tactic to keep slaves separatee so they wouldn't work together and fight back, same reason why they weren't allow to read or learn.
