The Lady of the Lake is a mysterious enchantress, often described as faerie or faerie-like, who presents the legendary sword Excalibur to King Arthur. Though often confused with the sword in the stone, Excalibur is a separate weapon, bound to Arthur by her gift. Beyond this, she is also remembered as the foster mother of Lancelot. After the death of his father, she carried the boy into her hidden, magical realm, where she raised and trained him until he was ready to take his place as one of Arthur’s greatest knights.
It’s been a while since I did some Arthurian legend artwork, and after our recent water tutorial, the Lady of the Lake felt like the perfect subject. If you watched that tutorial, you might recognize her as our last demo.
Arthurian legends fascinate me because the deeper you go, the more wandering and confusing they become. That is partly because these stories were passed down orally, changing with each time and place they were told. There are many versions of the same tales, and some, like Gawain and the Green Knight, appeared much later, almost 200 years after the main legends.
I hope you enjoy this piece and found the water tutorial helpful.
Oh, and we do have some slight color variations for this one that I couldn't pick between. Which one calls to you the most? Original blue, Cyan and Magenta Pop, or Purple Dream?
