Chapter 0 - A new app has installed.

Tim downloaded the app by accident. He had just texted a friend during class when a message came in that he thought was a reply. It was actually from some random number, which he did not notice before clicking on a link to an automatic download. After noticing his mistake, he was about to delete it until he read the name of the app. “Reality Editor?” he whispered.

Curiosity got the better of him, and Tim opened it. The first thing the app did was ask for permission to use his camera and storage. Thinking that it might be some kind of picture editor with filters, he gave it permission.

Sure enough, it activated his camera, and a little popup appeared with text that read:

Welcome, Beta Tester!

Thank you for downloading Reality Editor v.0.8. Based on your web browsing history, we have determined that you are in the target audience for our product. Please help us test the features of this app as we prepare for our launch. Follow the directions and send us your feedback once you have a chance to try it out:

1. Take a picture of a subject and confirm selection.

2. Wait for the caption to appear describing the subject.

3. Edit the caption as you choose.

4. Press the “Save” button to initialize the changes.

5. Witness the results of the edit.

Note: by default, only the user of the Reality Editor will have full awareness of changes made by the app.

At first, Tim was worried. The last thing he wanted was someone else knowing of the kinds of kinky things he found erotic. Still, there was no threat here, no mention of blackmail. He had been chosen for this because of his kinks. It almost felt like an honor. If it really was what it said it was, then it would be a dream come true. After all, this was the exact kind of scenario he had been fantasizing about for as long as he could remember.

Having gotten over his initial hesitation, Tim was now eager to test it out, so he secretly aimed his phone camera at the nerdy guy sitting next to him, and snapped a picture. A green box appeared around his head in the picture with text next to it that said, “Select this subject?”

Tim pressed on the green box, making it turn white. A caption appeared beneath the picture and his keyboard opened. There was only a single, brief sentence:

Tim pressed on where it said “show more,” and several more sentences appeared.

He considered pressing “show more” again to find out just how specific and intimate the description would get, but he decided that he had enough information now to begin editing. After briefly wondering what he should change about the caption, he decided that a good test of it would require him to change something simple but particularly noticeable. One word should do it, he realized, so he deleted “boy” in the first sentence and replaced it with “girl.”

When Tim pressed save, a new text box appeared that asked him “Do you wish to automatically revise the subject’s name and pronouns?” There was a “Yes” and a “No” button beneath the question. Tim pressed “Yes.”

A new popup appeared with a loading bar beneath the words “Initializing changes.”

As Tim waited for the bar to fill up, he heard Daniel say, “What the hell?”

Tim turned to see Daniel staring down at himself, horrified at the sight of his chest swelling larger as what appeared to be a pair of breasts grew beneath his T-shirt. At the same time, Daniel’s hair lengthened, and his features softened, losing every trace of facial hair as he appeared increasingly feminine. He lost a few inches of height as well. When his body stopped changing, Daniel looked as though he had been replaced by a twin sister, dressed in his old, oversized male clothes.

Then, the clothes themselves began to change, shrinking and reforming to fit his female body. His T-shirt tightened onto his smaller torso, like shrink wrap, forming around the contours of his decent-sized breasts and thin waist. His jeans shortened into jean shorts that molded around the shape of his wide butt. When it was over, the only thing that had not changed were the thick glasses on his face.

“Oh my God,” Daniel said, his panicked voice sounding higher pitched and increasingly melodic now. His smaller hands cupped his new breasts to test if they were real or not.

A squealing tone emerged from Tim’s phone, growing louder and louder until there was a blinding flash of light, followed by silence. Tim blinked for a few seconds as the after image of the flash faded. He looked over at Daniel again to see how she reacted to the flash.

Strangely, she seemed to be somewhat bored. The shock and growing panic she had been experiencing seemed to have disappeared with the flash.

“D-Daniel?” Tim whispered to the former boy next to him. “Are you okay?”

His newly female neighbor looked back at him and replied, “What?”

Feeling confused, Tim asked, “Aren’t you freaking out?”

“Over what?” the girl replied, sounding just as confused. “Did I miss something?”

“You’re a girl, now,” Tim said, struggling to believe that she had not noticed. “Look at yourself.”

She looked down at herself, getting a good look at the shape of her breasts, and back at him and said, “Yeah, I am. So what?”

“You didn’t notice the change?”

“What ‘change?’” she replied.

“Danielle,” the teacher called on her. “Did you have a question?”

“No,” she replied. “I was just about to tell Tim to stop hitting on me.”

The rest of the class chuckled, and Tim turned away from “Danielle,” with his face flushed with embarrassment. It seemed to be true that no one else had noticed how the student next to him had changed.

After the rest of the class had turned their attention back to the teacher and away from Tim, he checked his phone again. The image of the boy, Daniel, had been replaced by an image of the girl he had turned into, Danielle. The caption had changed as well:

Again, Tim thought about the name of the app. “Reality Editor,” he whispered. Not only had he edited the subject by changing the caption of the picture, but he had also edited reality itself to match the changes to the caption. He had written that Daniel was a girl, and now she really was. Again, he glanced at the girl sitting next to him to confirm that he had not just imagined it all. Sure enough, there was a nerdy girl sitting where the nerdy boy had been only minutes ago. Since the flash, it seemed that everyone else other than Tim was now unaware that anything had changed at all, even Danielle herself. As far as they all knew, this was how things had always been.

Just as the powerful implications of what the app had done became clear to Tim, the bell rang and everyone began to pack their bags and leave the classroom. Tim did the same, while his mind ran wild with ideas for what he might try next with the app.
