Final Call for Q&A Questions
Added 2025-02-16 14:25:07 +0000 UTCG'day all,
As noted in the video just released, now that I'm recovering I'm finally going to be doing the long delayed Q&A episode. I'm mostly working with the original question list collected last year, but given times have changed I wanted to give you an extra chance to suggest questions (and upvote those you want to see that are suggested by other) before the video is recorded.
Please throw your new questions below as comments on this post (or add a comment or like to any you see that you think should feature in the episode).

2025-05-05 07:00:37 +0000 UTCWith the middle east being it's usual self again, do you believe that a war will break out between Iran and Israel (presumably backed and directly supported by the US)? If so what in your experience a war like that look like and how will it play out, and will the US use it's previous strategies such as in the first gulf war in 1991? Will US Allies like Turkey and Saudi Arabia (and the other gulf states) allow US forces to use their airspace and US bases insider their borders to conduct offensive operations against Iran and more importantly use them for logistics? Side note: I know the Q&A vid has been uploaded but here's hoping this makes it into the next one?

2025-04-18 17:29:20 +0000 UTCPutting this here in response to the just released video on Tariffs in the hopes that Perun actually sees it. I would be very careful how much faith you put in US polls, especially those put out by main stream media outlets and get the most attention. For instance, many of them had Hilary and Kamala very comfortably winning their elections up to a week before the votes were cast and Biden winning by about 2-3x his actual margins. Others pollsters, such as People's Pundit (Rich Barris) of the Public Polling Project (who is admittedly Pro-Trump but usually been within 2-3 points on the elections as much as a month out, aside from Biden's election where he was still closer than other polls) are seeing signs of growing support for Trump's policies. The big issue for the highly popularized polls is that their methodologies don't capture the suburban/rural blue collar and lower-middle class electorate well. This is likely driven by the people paying for those polls wanting it that way.

2025-03-27 17:54:23 +0000 UTCLooking for that poll. I vote for something as 'April Fools' as you can, current world news is making me depressed. Maybe a battel between two flightless birds, because what good is a 'Bird' that can't fly?

2025-03-25 00:55:44 +0000 UTCThe current US administration may change in 4 years but it's actions will have long term geopolitical impacts. Taking Australia as an example, what recommendations would you make to diversify our inventory to reduce the risk to parts/upgrades embargoes and build capabilities to replace those provided by the US (primarily comms/isr)? In building new alliances, we need to bring something to the table. What could that be? Munitions manufacture, metals, drones, troop training, logistics, troop mobility vehicles? Finally (adding some controversy into the mix), having seen the impact of manpower shortages, should Australia introduce a Territorial Army? Maybe less focused on frontline actions but more on logistics and engineering capabilities. Would it look like the SES with an expanded mandate, using military grade equipment rather than civilian?

2025-03-15 00:59:32 +0000 UTC09-Mar-2025 NEW QUESTION: As Russia's material reserves in heavy vehicles deteriorates, it's likely they'll need to look more and more towards N. Korea as a source. What does North Korea's reserves of AFVs, IFVs, MBTs, etc. look like?

2025-03-09 18:12:29 +0000 UTCNew question 3/7/2025, shortly after the mainstream press is reporting that Russia just did a massive attack on Ukrainian infrastructure. Press reports say, "261 attack vehicles — 67 missiles of various types and 194 drones, some which were outfitted with dummy warheads to confuse and overwhelm air defense crews. Ukraine shot down or disabled most of the attack drones, the air force said, but only destroyed 35 of the 67 missiles. " (New York Times) My question is: Is an attack of this scale new? Or is the mainstream press deciding to pick up stories like this only now, because the politics in the US have shifted so dramatically recently? My impression is that Russia has been shelling Ukrainian infrastructure since the start of the war, but I don't know to what degree.

2025-03-06 16:12:38 +0000 UTCIt's not just about tariffs, I'm more concerned about support to keep them running when the need is highest. "You don't have the cards, you have a weak hand, you gotta talk to Xi".

2025-03-03 14:48:07 +0000 UTCIf the US places a Tarraf on our iron ore, maybe we should just not sell them the iron and buy the subs from the UK and give them the iron ore instead.

2025-03-03 01:10:27 +0000 UTCI see the E-7 Wedgetail got a mention in todays video. Given Australia was the first to ask for this and thus probably paid for most of the research to be done to design it, why is it still listed as a 'USA' product even though they don't operate it yet? Should this be an 'Australian export', we manufactured frames 3 through 6.
Andrew Maltby
2025-03-03 01:05:07 +0000 UTCThis is more of a video idea, but after watching your episode on Europe defending itself without the US, I wonder if you'd do the same with Asian countries (Australia included)? Like I hear lots of rhetoric about a "pivot" to Asia instead of Europe, but Trump's positive views on Xi suggest otherwise.

2025-03-02 15:43:40 +0000 UTCWell, India isn't an ally of Ukraine nor a member of NATO. The United States is. I didn't know the rest of NATO was required to produce an alternative plan to Trump's sell out to Putin. Negotiating with only Putin and Saudi investment fund managers just isn't a serious negotiation. I could tell you to give everything you own to Ukraine but that doesn't mean much. It certainly doesn't require a counter proposal. Maybe Gen. Kellogg will come up with something palatable for Ukraine and this is all Trump's way of extorting more from Ukraine for our support and Trump is just screwing with Putin. Time will tell.

2025-02-23 09:03:27 +0000 UTCAs an aerospace guy, I have a question about future fighter procurement that came out of the recent Sandboxx video on the F-15EX being able to compete with 5th-generation platforms. If an F-15, which has a massive RCS, can compete mostly by getting a 5th gen ELINT system that can get a weapons quality track on incoming radar and new engines, how important actually is stealth?
Matthew Glimcher
2025-02-23 02:01:30 +0000 UTCAs weapons have gotten smarter and longer range and everything has gotten more software-defined, I think the marginal cost of adding battlefield effect capabilities and the required design compromises have gone down dramatically. as for the F-35, if you look at the parts commonality and stuff, it's more like 2.5 planes with a common engine, avionics, and sensors. Trying to make one airframe with multiple physical capabilities (land, carrier, and VTOL) turned out to add a lot of cost and not quite work. I think it might be more informative to treat those as separate questions on some level.
Matthew Glimcher
2025-02-23 01:54:57 +0000 UTCThat's a really interesting question. I think it depends a bit on what kind of forces. I suspect for ships and aircraft they'll just follow whatever the civilian market lands on. warplanes would probably appreciate the extra cooling power from hydrogen. I suspect warships will probably lean a lot more into nuclear than civilian ones, but some combination of nuclear and methanol is looking like a good bet for both. land vehicles are a harder question though. They aren't really big enough to adopt hydrogen or nuclear and military vehicles can't really accept the charging time for fully electric. If synthetic methanol does manage to become a major fuel for ocean shipping (Mearsk is betting on it), that might be a decent solution for a dense fuel that's liquid at room temperature.
Matthew Glimcher
2025-02-23 01:35:20 +0000 UTCIf the whole thing is just a preparatory meeting, why did Trump give away important "trump cards" beforehand? Of course, any agreement requires the consent of the Ukrainians. But does Trump know that? Then why aren't they at the table? And then why didn't Trump discuss a strategy with the Ukrainians first? It may be that Europeans disagree about what the path to a temporary end to the war (I don't call it peace) should look like. But does Trump have any idea? And how will the plan be implemented without the Europeans? Does Trump realize the damage he ultimately causes? You notice that you come up with a lot of new questions, but don't answer any of the original ones.
Michael Woerl
2025-02-22 06:46:52 +0000 UTCSo the US leadership telling fellow Nato countries they need to increase defense spending, preserve free speech, and look for a peace deal to a conflict that's frontlines have been frozen for 18 months is siding with Putin and Xi? After three years of war and hundreds of thousands of casualties, the current plan laid out by the EU and Biden hasnt worked.
Brian Gasser
2025-02-21 21:37:23 +0000 UTCThe meeting in Saudi was at the foreign minister level seeing if their was a path for further talks and structure. There hasnt been contact with the Russians and the West since 2020. Everyone knows no peace can occur without Ukrainian consent. With Europe unable to generate a coherent peace strategy (proved at the Paris meeting), there is no point giving them a seat to the table right now. US officials are in Kiev today briefing the Ukrainians.
Brian Gasser
2025-02-21 21:30:55 +0000 UTCRather than just singling out the US, where is your outrage with non western nations (such as India) buying Russian oil? Europe is free to bankroll Ukraine's defense needs with the US leadership and population looking for an off ramp to this conflict. Even after Monday's emergency meeting in Paris with EU/UK, there is no alternative plan being put foward by the Europeans.
Brian Gasser
2025-02-21 21:24:19 +0000 UTCGiven Trump outright switching sides and joining Putin in the attempt to tear down the current world order laid out in the Bretton Woods agreements back at the end of WWII to be replaced with the pre-WWI system of might=makes-right empires because that ended so well... twice. I was hoping that NATO would step up and hold the line against a much weakened Russia until I realized just how interwoven our defense systems are. Can you outline this catastrophic new Trumpian world order? And this doesn't even touch the horror of Trump giving technical support to Russia and, directly or indirectly, China. Also there's nuclear proliferation in our brave new world... In a less anti-Trump way then I'd likely put it. I'm kind of touchy when it comes to incompetents destroying my country and our (former) alliances and greatly raising the possibility of future nuclear exchanges. But I worry too much. I'm sure Kash is getting right on checking to see if Elon freed up any nukes when his gremlins shuttered the nuclear weapon safety office in the energy department. Oopsie. Elon bad.

2025-02-21 11:53:43 +0000 UTCThe Croatian Prime Minister - Andreja Pelenkovic- said at the Munich Security Conference that Croatia knows how hard it is to fight for your survival; it took 7 years to liberate all the occupied Croatian lands. Ukaraine has a head start, being a recognised country. Do you think it will be 7 years also or a ‘generational’ war?

2025-02-21 01:47:32 +0000 UTCSocial media is hot on the topic that “Zelensky doesn’t know where half/all the $350 Billion has gone. It’s probably one of Trump’s tweets re-posted. 2025-02-19 22:04:18 +0000 UTCThese are good questions, I think! If I may be so free, some interesting thoughts on at least some of your questions are in this video from Paul Warburg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRUp5HUjr7s I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, but I do think he is right that Ukraine has a stronger negotiation position than 3 years ago, and a stronger position than Trump realises, and can politically just not accept a deal on Moscow's terms.
Tim van der Leeuw
2025-02-19 20:58:51 +0000 UTCThere specifically about the peace negotiations and their actual substance. At the moment, Putin lays claim to the four oblasts, but does not fully control any of them. Since he has given this claim constitutional status, he cannot simply renounce it. How is this problem to be solved? What will happen to the people living in this oblast? Suppose, and this assumption is very valid, that they do not want to become Russians. What will happen to the Ukrainian-controlled territory in Kursk? What power does Trump really have over the Ukrainians? There are no US troops that he could simply withdraw. A new military aid package is likely to be ruled out anyway. What incentive does Ukraine have to follow the decisions taken in Saudi Arabia? Assuming that British and French troops are actually stationed in Ukraine, isn't that a setback for the Russians? Three years of war with the alleged reason for war NATO expansion, in order to then have to tolerate troops from NATO countries at the border. What incentive does Putin have to agree to a ceasefire/peace agreement? Can he do that at all? I mean, he can't stand in front of the Russians and say, "Okay, we have about a million dead and wounded, but I've expanded the national territory by about one percent." Can he actually do this economically? The Russian economy is running on war production. That is the only driver of the economy. What actually happens to the hundreds of thousands of veterans returning from the war in this case? What is the probability that nothing will come out of it? Except, of course, beautiful photos and a reputation gain for Putin. Trump has a history of such negotiations. But the damage he does is very real. The moral assessment that a US president is negotiating with a war criminal about the sovereignty of a European country, without this country, without the Europeans, in Saudi Arabia, I will spare myself that now. However, we will remember that. Sorry for my english. I am German. Best regards,
Michael Woerl

2025-02-17 03:01:51 +0000 UTCI'd be interested in hearing about making flexible multi-capable platforms from a cost/benefit point of view. I almost always hear this in a negative context such as how having A/B/C drove the cost and complexity of the F-35 through the roof. But this always seems to be in the context of a single platform, and well it's pretty obvious how it would cost more. But how would that compare to going with three independent 5th gen fighter programs that are simpler? (to give an example of the opportunity cost not considered.)

2025-02-16 21:41:45 +0000 UTCRelated to the gaming channel, so semi-serious (related to your personal 'logistics'). Backdrop: You regularly run across the problem of doing a recording and finding out later that you've recorded without sound or some other issue. The latest incident seems to have been timed around a particularly nasty Windows rollout surrounding USB, which affected a LOT of folks I work (and play) with over the past month or so - as well as myself. Q1 - Have you looked at doing a short 'pre-record' of 5 minutes or so before any important sessions, and playing things back to confirm everything is in order (video, sound etc). I follow several folks who started doing this several years ago - including the 'casual' video producers. Q2 - On hardware, have you considered having similar mics for both your local and travel recordings? A travel model from a similar manufacturer would work, if those exist, but honestly I would think (since the gaming record is presumably on a gaming desktop) that something along the lines of a Blue Yeti or similar would be feasible for the gaming channel records. Part of this is to help your ailing sound guy by having a common source for everything, so to speak.

2025-02-16 16:49:23 +0000 UTCAmerican reliability in defense/foreign policy has always been pendulous and tied to politics. This uncertainty in the face of a conventional war in Europe, major competing economic interests, and emerging challengers to the US rules based world order are now priming the current powers for a reconsideration of this order What do you think will happen? Are the European powers so sclerotic that they lack the energy to reconstitute into something that can protect their own interests while challenging Russia/China and the US? Will they have to rearm themselves and act under a separate alliance than NATO which now seems antiquated and ineffectual? Will the 5 eyes survive? What could a Machiavellian like Putin gain from creating another separate power so close to home? The US would be weakened but Russia is not strong enough to fill any void the US may leave. Which nations will presumably pick up America's tab? - If each NATO member were to see a proportional increase in their defense spending, how would each member state be affected and what would that do to their economies? - What resources has the US been supplying to Ukraine that cannot be as easily replaced by other NATO members? - If NATO members fail to supply Ukraine with the right resources, how might Russian-aligned nations respond? Would they feel emboldened and begin financially supporting the Russian war effort in kind?

2025-02-16 14:52:38 +0000 UTC1) what would be the hardest assistance to replace if the US were to totally cut off Ukraine? Are there specific military assets that only the US can provide? Or would logistics, targeting, etc be the greatest loss? 2) what are your thoughts on the plausibility and possible repercussions of a quasi-invasion of crimea? Not a traditional operation meant to take and hold territory, but rather something more akin to the original Russian invasion of crimea where Ukraine, with the assistance of local partisans, just tried to temporarily take enough beachheads to insert, say, 5000 special forces personnel, who would then disperse and try to make the territory ungovernable (presumably this would require a simultaneous attack on the bridge)

2025-02-16 14:41:43 +0000 UTCHave you any estimate on what size of investment into Ukrainian defence industry that would be needed to scale a strong enough longrange drone and missile production to enable an effective strategic bombing campaign. And by effective i mean something that has strategic effect. As like making the Russians desidert they cant continue or cripple their economy so much that their force quality deteriorate so much that Ukraine can start taking larger parts of russia or push the russians out ot a significant part of the occupied areas? Know US had some 1000 sorties a day in Iraq, so was thinking in the area of a continous production of 900 long range drones and 100 missiles a day or something would be needed?

2025-02-16 14:40:11 +0000 UTCTwo questions that have been puzzling me for a while: 1. A lot of logistics in the Ukraine conflict seem to be done by rail (source: Michael Hilliard of The Red Line). A transportation option that is remarkably predictable in the route it will take. If not to wreck the rails, as these can be quickly repaired, why not target the trains themselves? 2. When looking at russian military spending, some people (Ryan McBeth for instance) say that there is nowhere near enough money being spent to maintain the massive nuclear arsenal. Does this make sense? Would it make sense to speculate that only the critical weapons are being maintained (mainly tritium cycle)?
