Where to host extra short video content?

This is more just a convenience question for all of you:

Now that I've finally recorded some extra content for the Patrons, would it generally be more convenient for you all to get links to unlisted YT videos or would you prefer I host the videos here on Patreon itself?

Just to keep things consolidated I'd probably prefer to only make those extra posts in one location - but can do both if that would be meaningfully more convenient for you all as well.

If you keep it on Patreon, will it help you with Monetization of the content, so your earnings increase? That needs to be a goal or at least a consideration. Doesn’t increased circulation/distribution contribute to that? Would releasing on both make sense from an eyes on perspective? I am just not familiar enough with how revenue streams work on the two platforms.

Perun, I was wondering if you thought the idea of doing an episode on a Flying Tigers style military unit in Ukraine, from a logistics, finance and geopolitical angle would have merit. David

David Wolf

I 'm leaning toward the consensus that you should do whatever is more convenient for you. But my personal preference would be to be able to watch all you're content ad-free (so all vids also available here; ad-reads i don't mind).

Mike Zitter

A few of the other content creators I support here on Patreon use a separate YT channel for restricted videos but post it here. The native Patreon video setup is inferior to that on YT. As long as the video remains 'unlisted' and the link is only posted here, the result will be both what you intend and user friendly.

Aw heck. Perrin doesn’t do a darn thing; sitting around all week excepting two, three days when he starts drinking caffeinated products (preferably those on sale) and eating preordered pizza delivered at four-hour intervals. His only error was his thinking on getting one-thousand or more Patreon subscribers and then cut the workload to one presentation monthly, hopefully about game play. Man, do I ever wish I had such a cushy job as he.

DC Williams

You'd still get the Patreon notification when he posts the link to the YouTube video. The only difference between the options is where the video lives, on YouTube or on Patreon

Deviant

Do what works for you, Perun. It's more important to me that this NOT be an extra burden that diminishes what you normally do (which is always excellent).

Jim Teague

I trust Youtube more than Patreon for privacy

Medici

Patreon's native video playing ability is pretty terrible IME.

Yonatan Zunger

For me Patreon has better notification than YouTube

Kenneth Crips

While I'm all for making the extra content available for everyone, I'm not sure if this would cause issues due to any YouTube restrictions on public videos (copyright strikes, adult-only, graphic content restrictions, etc) . Also not sure if I want a large number of YouTube notifications for content other than your regular weekly posts. Perhaps post the additional content to a second YouTube channel? But really do whatever works best for you.

Earl Dabney

I find YT much easier to use than Patron, but please choose whatever's easiest for you. EDIT - forgot about the ads on YT!! Also, having now read other comments, I support making these videos generally available. We aren't Patreons because we want extra goodies!

Paul Haynes

What I have read between the lines of what you've said over the years is that there's stuff that doesn't make the cut for a standard episode, but you don't want to ditch it entirely, therefore you'd like to offer it to Patrons. If it doesn't take additional work for you to do so, I'm all for it. I voted for it being posted here as I figure it would require some sort of code to get access on YouTube, and that might be beyond my brain power. :) Also, you wouldn't have to worry about any of YT's sporadic temper tantrums about content - maybe that doesn't apply to private-access videos? But who knows what the future will hold. Regardless, I wish I could tell you how much I have enjoyed what you've provided to us, from the snarky humor to the incisive analysis. I just wanted to understand the war in Ukraine better. You've opened my understanding to far more than that. Thank you!!!!! And if you're ever in North America, we'd love to have you to visit us in NW lower Michigan!

Holly Shaltz

I won't watch short form videos, and encourage you to spend your time and energy on in depth analysis.

Roger

Completely different to my other comment, some of the secondary material (like clips from the South Korean arms expo), you might be able to make 'YT Shorts' out of. This might help get you some more views with a wider audience.

Andrew Maltby

I think some of you need to re-read the question. Perun I believe, is asking where to post the extra content, I'm assuming stuff like 'unedited video from the South Korean arms expo', or some content that got cut from a video that we too long. These 'behind the scenes' or other 'unedited' type stuff is not intended for 'everyone'. I Support Perun on Patrion because, like a lot of you here, I think his work is so good he deserves it, not because I what any 'extra stuff'. Perun, if you provide this content as an unlisted YT video, the link can get handed around anyway by people who 'want everyone to see it'. In that case you may as well just put it up on YT. I think here on Patrion is the best place for it, everyone here who has said to put it on YT, can't say that they don't know how to access it here.

Andrew Maltby

Your content is so good that I tend to archive it on my local NAS. Youtube is much easier to DL from than Patreon. That said, I would recommend cross-posting to Rumble at some point to ensure YouTube (or Patreon) can't just nuke you at whim.

Stargazer

+1 for making them public for all.

Toilailee

Either is fine with me, but because Patreon won't insist on shoving ads into the videos I vote in favor of here.

skyhawk

Either is fine with me, but I share the general opinion that your material is so good it should be available to all.

Beth

As so many others have said. Exclusive content is silly. We support you cause your videos are awesome and we don’t want them to go away. Not for exclusive content

Brian Fane

As the nth version of this, your patreon members probably don't need enticement and if it's worth your time in making a video, it's probably of general interest. I would say just post everything public.

Alan D Adams

I think youtube is the best for uploading the extra videos, but I wonder if maybe making these times exclusives? Having extra stuff as a patron is always cool, but I think especially with the kind of videos that you make, having them be available to the wider public is a good thing

Sandwich247

definitely wouldn't like floatplane

Sandwich247

we really need a fully decentralized content platform

Julian Wälde

Make everything available for everyone. Your content is important. And fun. I would be Patreon no matter what.

Johnny Pilblad

I personally would prefer if you made the extra content available for everyone on YouTube. I'm not a Patron for "exclusive" content. I'd prefer more people have access to all of your content.

qbNone

While it does go against the idea of consolidation, I’d prefer a “Perun Shorts” Youtube channel for short-form content. Due to how the algorithm on Youtube works, I’d think it’d be better to avoid posting too many videos back to back on the main Perun channel. Might not be an issue here if the videos will be spaced out though.

Azutone

Yes it is paid. So I’m sure the creators get way more from my views there than a thousandth of a penny from a view on YouTube. Some creators post things on Nebula that YouTube wouldn’t allow (eg covering topics they don’t like covered). Others post extended versions there. Or a day sooner. Not saying those approaches are suitable for Perun; just noting that it exists and is an option to consider.

David Machaj

The only think Patreon is good for is taking my money and giving some of it to you, which is enough. I've only started getting these notices again after a good year of nothing.

Jasper Welsch

I don't use the Patreon app and I've never been able to watch a Patreon video from any creator on their website.

Jasper Welsch

To the tune of $30 per year. So the patreon stuff shouldn't go there but a partnership with them could remove the ad reads for those folks. Of course, Perun's ad reads are painless in comparison too. I agree with David it might be worth investigating, but not for patreon material

Biofoot78

Nebula is a pay streaming site isn't it?

David N

If you extra material here on Patreon there should, hopefully be less chance of it being removed if someone complains. Further, I believe that you can make material public on Patreon when YT doesn't like it and also provide substantiating info, etc here to make it public.

David N

Either is fine by me.

alexander gaitan

Have you considered other platforms like Nebula or Floatplane? For creators that cross-post to Nebula I always prefer to watch there with no ads.

David Machaj

Youtube is just what everyone already uses and is used to, probably best not to swap platforms now or well have to retrain all the troops lol.

Syrehn

Patreon has a horrible video player sadly

dan

I would prefer links to unlisted YT videos to videos hosted on Patreon because it is easier to cast YT videos to my TVs.

Whit Johnstone

YT. For all its flaws it is a superior video platform.

Seidmadr

I like the links to unlisted YT. That lets me download them via Wi-Fi then listen to them offline while I'm walking my dogs!

Falcon_Neil

Personally, it is much easier for me to get unlisted YouTube videos on my TV than to get Patreon videos displayed.

Patreon Potato

Definitely youtube. The patreon player is unfortunately very bare-bones and I have issues with the bandwidth constantly.

Martin

Do what's convenient for you, we'll figure it out and accept it
