Seeking Questions for potential Q&A

G'day all,

As flagged in the last episode, I'm considering doing a second Q&A episode in the coming weeks.

I'd like to give you all a chance to put up questions as thanks for your ongoing support for me and the channel.

If you'd like to, please leave your question suggestions as comments under this post, and if you particularly like any of the others you see people leave, feel free to like them so I can see any that generate particularly high interest.

I can't guarantee I'll get to every question, but I promise I will be reading all of them and will do what I can.

Considering the grim picture painted of the Russian war machine that I get from watching your videos on both their recruitment and equipment situation, I'd be very interested in your thoughts on the threat that Russia still poses to other European nations within the next decade. How much combat power can they retain and (re-)generate assuming that a stand-still in Ukraine is imminent. Before the background of the recent Munich conference with the US withdrawing much of their support guarantees - where is European security on the scale of "Screwed" to "Just fine"?

Robin Engel

And who you consider to be the most astute classic military theorist

Paul Bailin

To what extent do you consider ongoing debates in public policy when deciding the timings & choice of topics for you videos? For example, we're expecting the UK's new Strategic Defence Review & Defence Industrial Strategy to be published in the first half of this year. Do you plan for the United Kingdom nation study to contribute or respond to these publications?

Jamie Phadke

Pacific Nations Future, Defence support packages and their reliance on China, USA, India, France & Australia (plus others,. Winners, losers and unknown knowns.

Aram Hummerston

I'd kind of like to see a commentary on Clausewitz' "On War". Your perspective on what holds up, what doesn't, and what lessons you'd take away from it.

Mr Acurite

This!

Markus Pfister

Good question! Given statements (in light of the recent U.S. election, one presumes), EU military independence seems to be a priority right now.

Joe Vandevander

Given the recent updates in Syria... Syrian Military capabilities would be interesting.

DW18

How did you choose your channel name "Perun"? Is it for the god of thunder?

Erik

Not really a question but I would love some of your book recommendations.

Ryan Wisniskie

Given today's election results... Potential Winners/Loosers of European Rearmament efforts?

Typowy Laman

Forgive me if I am late to the dance ... I am new to the videos and to this channel. I have what might be a strange question and one which I am finding hard to research, though my resources are limited. The question has to do with the effects of this war on the breadbasket of Europe. I cringe at thoughts of the rarest and most fertile earth on this planet peppered with mines and related debris. I cringe too at the thought of food accessibility and its costs. Shipping out of Odessa is still sparse and river plus overland routes are costly and largely inefficient. Perun, if this is not a topic you want to deal with, can anyone point me to resources that might have some data ? Many thanks.

Gloria B Renner

If you would be charged with the task to create a strategy game that concentrates solely in military procurement, what would be your draft?

Johannes Walter

Is there any taxonomy for different types of procurement systems (and recruitment), or critical comparison, so one can put them next to each other and pick something that delivers the most combat power per money spent?

Niclas Hansemark

How did you get interested in/affiliated with in the defense economic sphere and did you ever consider making content like you make now before the 2022 invasion of Ukraine?

PaiHuaiTe

I vaguely remember you once posted an idea for an episode on how election systems destroy countries, is it still in the pipeline?

Yoav Kozenyuk

And - What are the chances that a defeated Russia finds its Ataturk to lead them out of defeat along a path that doesn’t involve starting another war a generation later?

John Allison

(oops, premature send!) Ukraine will be in the same boat, but it is reasonable to expect NATO to give them aid to rebuild, a second Marshall Plan. Would NATO also give Russia aid? If not, is there any way to keep Russia from devolving into chaos?

K Sherwood

Suppose Ukraine "wins" -- gets Russia to get out of Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk, return all the Ukrainians that were kidnapped uh relocated -- what happens next? With Russia being humiliated, having drawn down lots of their capital reserves, and a significant number of citizens being dead or wounded/traumatized, what is their way out?

K Sherwood

Could you do a defence economics perspective on Sun Tzu's The Art of War, and how it has influenced modern thinking on the subject? I suspect you might enjoy that one.

Timothy Crowhurst

Any thoughts of touching the naval topic more in-depth? Maybe covering "secondary" navies that are not quite "US or China" but still capable and what they bring to the table? Especially with the security of the sea lanes deteriorating and some of the biggest player's stretched thin compared to the past years, it would be interesting to have a look at some of the players that can fill the gaps or at least alliviate their allies.

ElAyVee

I would say the reason is artillery and the productive capabilities of production of arty ammo and missiles for the air force, which together with Russias massive SAM reserves is the second point, while the final point is large stockpiles of AFVs and arty.

Michael Andrej Molnár

Could you do a video on the evolution of both sides doctrine compared to Soviet and NATO Cold War doctrine?

Michael Andrej Molnár

Could you please do a video on anti-tank battle history between Soviet and NATO forces (explore lesser known battlefields like Iran-Iraq) and the same also on historical SAM use for access denial between Soviet and NATO forces, viewed by experience in Ukraine? How did ATGMs, SAM and AshM develop from the Cold War all the way until the Russo Ukrainian war?

Michael Andrej Molnár

If North Koreans are going to be fighting in Ukraine, what the hell does that mean, realistically?

Joe Vandevander

And please include wild foxes in the process of domesticating their humans on the front line.

Ole Bjørsvik

At the very least it could be a topic of discussion in an larger update video for Israel more than a year at war.

Luna Amy Swan

Following up your 6th Gen fighter development video, have there been any major changes in the intervening time?

Joe Vandevander

Went back through your videos and found the "One Year" video. Energy independence from Russia completed in the EU at this point?

Joe Vandevander

Can we get a follow-up to your "6 Months of War in Ukraine" summary with Winter coming up? What's Ukraine's, Russia's, and Europe's energy preparation look like with cold weather coming? Americans are not as supportive of Ukraine as they once were because of our crazy partisanship; what's the state of play in Europe?

Joe Vandevander

Would you ever do a geopolitics/defense strategy of the Balkans? Talking about how the countries have developed and have gone in different directions since the 90s?

JudoJoker

Do you think that the Asia Pacific countries will form a NORAD system, to detect ballistic missile lift off and intercept if enters a countries air space? Or as more countries purchase Lockheed Martin assets, could NORAD expand globally under Colorados, the USA command?

Bradley Prince

Don't let him know about Factorio - he'll stop doing anything but uploading Factorio videos

Shaarred

What topic would you really like to do a video on, but can't, due to which reason?

Shaarred

It would be a controversial topic, but I would suggest an video looking at the impacts of an Arms embargo on Israel, and how the Israeli defence industry would react to it, form an pure defence economics perspective.

Luna Amy Swan

Maybe not a Q&A but a full 1 hr video, I was wandering why our new 'Hunter' ship only has 32 Mark 41 cells. I know you can't do Australia specific stuff, but looking at the MK41 'Wiki' page, there are a lot of other 'Frigate/Destroyer's' that only have 24 or 32 cells that have been built recently (UK Type 31, Japan Asahi-Class). Maybe you could do a video on the cost difference going from 16 VLS cells to 32, to 64, to 96. Noting that just because a ship has 48 cells, it doesn't have to patrol in peace time with all cells filled with munitions. My thoughts are 48 cells would be the minimum for self-defence given todays potential saturation attacks, 64 cells if you want to have 'Offensive' capacity. How much extra cost is there to build a ship for 48 cells over 16 cells given no other changes in the ship specifications (i.e. same radar/engines/staffing), noting that the ship may have to be a couple meters longer to fit the extra VLS (like adding a payload module in the Virginia Sub. So this would be 'what is the cost penalty to 'future proof' a design.

Andrew Maltby

Listening to "The Russian Understanding of War" by Oscar Jonsson, PhD. Might be of interest to someone here. Is there a Perun book or library club?

Niclas Hansemark

How might the adoption of the Kiwitopian symbol of a flightless bird affected relations with Emutopia given the country is the only country to have lost a war to a flightless bird, which they adopted as a symbol in recognition?

Rojer

Also, you mentioned on the previous Q&A that your bosses know about your channel. What do they think about it? Do they think it's cool? Has it impacted what you do with your work or does it exist on its own island?

Nick Johnson

When you're traveling and need to record audio for a video, how do you go about maintaining quality audio while doing so? Do you bring anything with you or do you make do with what's available?

Nick Johnson

If not too big a topic: what is the impact of western troops in ukraine on the industry of "civil goods" if there is any? Like how the allied troops stationed in germany after ww2 had an impact on the industry (in terms of available purchase power and product needs)?

Reichsbierminister

More of a hypothetical. What does a full mobilization of the US look like? What assets get sent where? How much lift versus protection to get units to Europe or the Phillipines.

Adam Cavoli

Marintime logistics and how fragile these chains are. Be it getting disrupted by COVID, dudes in choke points with missiles or the increasing trend away from a globalised economy.

eezaak

Just watched the latest video about Russian munitions storage standards and I've got to say, I think you're completely wrong about this line: " It certainly seems from some of the satellite imagery, like the approach to ammunition storage on some of these bases was such, that if senior NCO's from some NATO militaries ever got onto these bases & saw conditions first hand, theyd probably be significantly torn between what to do first -- go apoplectic with rage--or collapse from a brain aneurysm" Any NATO Senior NCO's immediate reaction would be to order his men to ABOUT FACE! and CHARGE to the rear. Unfortunately he'd also be too preoccupied to marvel at the way he was getting an unplanned 20 miles forced route march in full gear from his men without a single complaint or even person grousing.

Stargazer

Will the EU ever be able to defend itself or will it always have to rely on the US ? With that can the EU afford to defend itself (budget/economics) ?

Cody Nunn

Do you think we're going to see the advent of micro-drone ballistic warfare in the Ukrainian - Russia war or when China decides to take a stab at Taiwan?

Robe Pettigrew

There are at least a few in this group who live in the USofA; are strong USofA Constitutional 2nd Amendment supporters; and, would be glad to form cordons around your living and working environs. I mean, we can still bring firearms into the land down under if we’re hunting. Eh?

DC Williams

Is there any historic defence economics that you find interesting and want to analyse? Whether that be the decisions made or the scenario faced?

Tetaredon

Can you polish your crystal ball and answer the tough question. What will the final outcomes of the war be? Obviously there are a huge number of unknowns but there will be some things that are already certain, such as Drone Warfare thing in the future, and you have already said that even if Russia 'Won' they would only win a very hostile Ukraine.

Brendan Waugh

I would be very much interested on historical deep dives into the Cold War, especially the Soviet doctrine on using SAMs, ATGMs and AshM as an overarching strategy to use rockets wherever possible. An episode on the development of the submarine force or surfaced vessels as missile dumpers would be interesting. Or the role of ATGMs in Yom Kippur, or the duel between Soviet and Western equipment in the Iran-Iraq war. Maybe even WW2 stuff like aircraft

Michael Andrej Molnár

You have multiple times stressed the fact that you value your privacy. How is that working out for you? I am thinking that you have been running this channel for 2½ years and you have said and argued points that will not be well received by certain groups. So have you had any incidents of being targeted? Any need for increasing you personal and/or virtual security?

Morten Nielsen

A candidate subject, from audience curious on the economic sustainability of military-prioritizing nation states under barriers and/or sponsorship? What are methods and trends for weapons trade and production, e.g. the RF, Iran, DPRK, Pakistan, Egypt and others especially fr history. Necessity of mfg base, energy revenue, patronage, or other economic factor? What happened w/ absences thereof? And, do data of SIPRI , IISS actually disagree?

Mack

Could you do a episode on the British Military Industry and explain how the same nation can fumbled the Ajax program but still produce fairly affordable aircraft carriers

Cameron Pollock

Would it be possible to get an update to Germany’s 100 billion euro modernization plan. Have they actually spent any of the money yet and if so what did they spend it on? If not then why.

Stefanie Butts

Since I've been little, I've always installed Rome Total War on all of my PCs. Do you have a game that you adore and install on every computer/Keep coming back to?

Racecar

Would you rather fight one Urbanmech-sized FPV, or 1,000 FPV-sized Urbanmech.

Brad Sattler

With the massive growth of your channel over the last few years, do you have information on the extent that Russians are viewing your content? How many views are from Russia (relatively speaking)? Do you think some of your views and opinions can have a direct or indirect impact on the average russian or even russians in key positions?

Jonas

How big is the effect of cats on the morale of Ukrainian troups? How big is their effect on the the rodent population in the front lines?

InfinitePlayer

Is it probable/possible but the USA is using datalink and synthetic aperture radar to negate the stealth abilities of its competitors aircraft. It seems significantly harder to see a black hole 55 million light years away then a bumblebee a hundred miles away.

spencer olson

Of the following What is the best defence economic strategy game in your opinion: 1. Dune and its variants 2. Tiberium sun and its variants 3. Red alert (1/2) 4. Generals 5. StarCraft 6. Warcraft Why? For which factions And what is the best wining strategy from defence economics perspective?

Stephan Krul

How does you average week look like? How do you find the time for a gaming channel, and thus gaming, researching, and making videos, and doing regular work and having a life?

Stephan Krul

Perun. I like some view on how the European defence market has changed globally with regards to the BREXIT. Has Britain leaving the EU changed internal defense influence, spending and positioning with respect to Britain or the EU major players. Or is it just part of a greater political shift? Leaving Brexit aside. Can you make or comment on a zoomed out level how European defence policy has changed over the years and how the global world is reacting to it? Could you provide some insight how the ‘recent’ African coups have changed the dynamics of security policy and defence spending in Africa? Maybe more on an episode that a Q&A, but it would be nice to do an episode on how the fall of the Soviet union impacted in the individual countries defence policy and spending in a wider overview.

Stephan Krul

Concerning the rule of them "Russia is neither as strong or as weak as it seems": how do you explain this paradox (for example having a strategic position with defensive strengths but offensive weaknesses)?

Sebastien

I understand that you can't talk about Australia and I understand why. This doesn't mean it's not very frustrating for your Australian audience. Do you have any Peruns you listen to about Australia and who are they?

Markus Pfister

Are there any good (audio-)books or similar resources that you recommend to improve one's understanding of defence economics?

Niclas Hansemark

Has youtube paid off to the point where you are doing this full time? Have you ever been worried you run out of content or ideas?

Traian Olinescu

Will you make a video about the Taiwanese Military? They are in quite a unique situation, so it would be very interesting. I dimly remember you said something on that topic, but I cannot remember when and cannot find where. Also, will there ever be updates on Rogue Trader?

Lindsch

How many languages do you speak? What’s your favorite board-game? How many Peruns would it take to outfight a single ostrich? On that note, how many armored ostriches would it take to shift the tide of the war?

DK

Describe your research process. Describe your research process and the depth/types of documents you read. In areas that aren't firmly within your area of expertise, how do you find all the nooks and crannies that even "experts" miss when you on average basically have a week to research any given topic? The detail you're able to dig in to regardless of the topic is always outstanding.

Jason Oppel

So I have read a few of the questions and most of them are soooo serious. So here is an attempt to do something different: If you could only save three books, which ones would you save and why? As horse-cavalry is (mostly) a thing of the past and the laser shark was not the success I expected: In your opinion, which animal has the biggest impact on current modern warfare and why? I have often heard that my profession has a profound impact on how I behave in my private life. (How) Does your job and/or the channel influence your private life? I am mostly thinking about sights to see or movie choices and the like... But I guess whatever you are ok sharing is relevant.

Cormigon

Would you consider looking at the Defense Economics of Argentina? Here we have had the military go from strong to very weak.

Brendan Waugh

Understanding the naval arms race between Germany and Great Britain being one of the possible precursors to the First World War, what are your thoughts on: 1. the recent naval growth of the PRC... 2. the role Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan play in indigenous resistance to said threat... 3. the future of naval warfare and maritime interdiction/protection of SLoCs? Apologies if you have already posted this before - it started to sound vaguely familiar as I was typing it out.

Hi Perun, serious question: how well drone-equiped are the UK and various EU armies? Looking at how pivotal these cheap drones have been in Ukraine, should armies be procuring thousands of these things to make sure their inventories are filled up? Not serious question: why did you stop playing Manor Lords? Cheers

Seb Taylor

What are you thoughts on China's presence in the South China Sea? Wat would be a strategy to counter China's presence for the other involved countries? What if the US stops backing these countries?

JKvdA

With Russia grinding down its military resources in Ukraine, could not the growing power vaccum of Eastern Siberia become the new ”Northern Expansion Doctrine” of China? It seems like a more viable expansion vector than Taiwan, would you not say?

Mattias Allring

Russia occupied Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts to establish a land bridge to Crimea. Now that they have that land bridge, they are supposedly building a railway to Crimea from Rostov-on-Don. There were many news reports of the start of the project, but I don't see updates. Is there any open-source imagery of this railway? How close is it to completion? How vulnerable is it to Ukrainian rocket artillery? Has Russia switched to relying mostly on ferries or armed transport ships for resupply of Crimea? How vulnerable are these? What shape is the Kerch bridge in? Is the railroad side back in full operation? How useful are the roads in Ukraine during mud season? Are trains critical or just more efficient for transport? The southern Ukrainian rail network appears to be single-pathed and not well suited to major east-west freight movement. Is that true of the southern Ukrainian road network as well?

Iain McClatchie

I missed the X4 Sale, any other game recommendations whilst I wait?

Doug

Could you list reliable channels/sources of information regarding Ukraine & other military matters? I am impressed by content providers ability to research topics but have no skill in this area.

The impact of industrial/cyber espionage on narrowing the technological gap: - how real it is? - known cases of this happening - perceive value of those practices - how to prevent?

David Cruz

How much VC-backed defense companies can disrupt the current industrial complex status quo (Think, but not just, Anduril here). Things that could be interesting here: - impact on procurement shaping and prioritisation - costs (I'm thinking R&D but also build up of industrial complex as well as direct procurement cost for a capability) - time to market of new capabilities - impact on politics & policies - What does it mean LM, RTX, NG, …

David Cruz

I'd love to hear more on Myanmar and the regional politics associated with ti

Nick Wright

Particularly interested in Thailand. To what extent do political considerations affect procurement (the Army control parliament along with the King). Also Mynamar - it's a horrible civil war - where are the arms coming from, how do the regional players like Thailand China and India influence what's going on there.

Nick Wright

You've made several videos detailing Russia's failures with corruption, leadership and politics: How Corruption Destroys Armies - Theft, Graft, and Russian failure in Ukraine How lies destroy armies - Lies, coverups, and Russian failures in Ukraine Russia's Kharkiv Offensive and Leadership Purge - Shoigu's removal, Kharkiv & What next for Ukraine? How Politics Destroys Armies: Politics, Factionalism & Russia's war in Ukraine Given Ukraine and Russia's shared history, I would have thought they would almost be on the same footing at the start of the war, with Russia's weakened army still able to completely outmatch Ukraine's weaker army. If they were on the same footing, Ukraine has managed to turn around any corruption or leadership failures in an unbelievable amount of time. It has managed to unite a majority of its people, and while there have been high profile cases of important Ukrainian officials being arrested or fired, they've pushed Russia back and mounted several tactical and strategic offensives that show a solid military leadership. If Ukraine is suffering from massive corruption and leadership failures, its not as obvious as Russia's. Was Ukraine as bad as Russia in terms of corruption, politics, factionalism, and leadership? Did they actually somehow 'fix' these problems during the start of the war? How has Zelensky and co. managed to cobble together what appears to be a miraculous military organization given their beginnings?

destructobeam

What are some misgivings or anxieties you have about running your channel?

Owen Lee

Circumpolar Commerce, and how much of a threat is Canada to Russia and Russia to all the northern nations

David Chief

I'd be really curious to see something exploring the casualty and personnel discrepancies in Ukraine. I've seen reports that the casualty ratio between Russia and Ukraine is somewhere in the vicinity of 1.5:1 (with massive error bars to be sure). Yet confirmed equipment losses tend to be more favorable to Ukraine. Also, during offensives such as Bakhmut and Avdiivka, the Russian loss ratio spiked substantially higher from what I've gathered. Yet if these battles were far more attritional for the Russians, when not engaged in massive frontal infantry attacks, it seems the loss ratio is uncomfortably close to 1:1, despite Ukraine largely being on the defensive. So question #1 would be why are the loss ratios so unfavorable for Ukraine given the defensive advantage and rather lackluster Russian tactics?  Also, I've been seeing reports of Russians having a 3:1 to 5:1 personnel advantage at various points on the front line (such as Kursk now as well as Pokrovsk). Yet when looking at the overall size of the Russian and Ukrainian militaries, the size discrepancy isn't that massive. How is Russia able to accumulate such large local superiorities in troop numbers when the overall army sizes aren't that far off? Finally, if what I've said is dramatically incorrect, I'd love to be factchecked into oblivion via PowerPoint on this lol

Devin Hughes

#2 Is the combined threat of Russia, China, lran & N Korea being taken seriously? Why, or why not?

Joseph Scales

#1 Why does the West provide enough to 'hold the line' -ish, but lack the political will (or so it seems) to provide Ukraine with the tools/training to actually win? I've always wondered why (for example) the US does not give about 3X the current level of aid so Ukraine can convincingly WIN.

Joseph Scales

Wouldn't it be cheaper to mount a lot of TOW/mortars on Quad bikes than to buy a single tank ? (and other questions of number vs quality)

Jericho

Are armoured vehicle (Like Roshel Senator recently given to Ukraine) useful on the battlefield and why ?

Jericho

How do you keep a war ready industry/economy in peace time ?

Jericho

Are amphibious vehicles used as such in Ukraine ?

Jericho

Why don't we see more radical approach to Ukraine war ? Like why don't we see space/rocket assisted/ drone dropped paratroopers behind the lines ? Why no drones swarm carpet bombing ? Why no laser demining devices ? Why no EMP charges to destroy radars and other sensors ? Why no assault hovercraft to go over minefield ? Fighter drones with autocannons to hunt other drones, planes and other aircrafts ? Why not massive assault of land drones ?

Jericho

Given that you are now 2.5 years in I would love to see an overview on your prediction precision. For example, in your first video 'All Bling, no Basics' you predicted that the war will not be a slam dunk for Russia and become a drawn out affair - given what we know today, this was a spot on prediction. Seeing a summary of all the predictions you did in past videos and how they turned out would be a genuinely interesting introspective. I would propose only including videos which (a) make specific predictions on the war in Ukraine and (b) are 2 years in the past to ensure that the prediction had sufficient time to get resolved. So far there have been a lot of predictions and assessments on the Ukrainian war by everybody and their mothers but I have yet to see somebody doing statistics on their precision.

spacesloth

Any chance on you coming out with some Emutopia and Kiwiland merch?

3and20

Have you considered making a video about the importance (or lack-of if you deem so) of training and exercises? Flight simulation, joint military exercises etc.

Andrei Mogosan

You mentioned in some of your videos that a middle-ground version of fighting equipment is preferable for some nations (recalling you mentioning it about fighter jets for example). My question would be this: considering the evolution of the war in Ukraine and war in general, how do you balance investing in high end fighting equipment and a small professional army compared to having your economy set up in such a way that it can quickly switch to fast mass production of equipment? I realize there are certain fields where high end equipment is needed (you’re not gonna hunt and sink a nuclear submarine with 10k blokes on skijets) but I also see the benefits of having national defense plans that has certain industries and companies instantly switch to let’s say drone production or the likes.

Andrei Mogosan

He did a video on that called "Nuclear Modernisation - Rearmament, ageing stockpiles and why Russia's nukes work (probably)" . It's an interesting topic

Andrei Mogosan

I find myself often thinking what would a road to world peace and global disarmament looks like so that’s what I want to ask you about your opinion on. What a peace with Russia should/could/might look like and how a nuclear disarmament of the country would look like (going as far as potentially taking Russia into NATO after the Ukraine war). Similar, given China’s growth and the threat it starts to pose to to US interests, I find myself thinking what type and what amount of effort would it take to cool spirits back down. I’d really love for us all to get into a big happy circle and focus our eyes to space.

Andrei Mogosan

Any thoughts on protectionist measures being implemented in the name of national security such as blocking the acquisition of US Steel?

Andreas van acker

What are your thoughts on USMC's FD2030 and how it will affect their capabilities in a future Pacific contingency?

Jonathon Marek

How would you try to ensure supply chain security in a build up to conflict scenario as well as in a hot war scenario

j ong

I would be particularly interested in defence procurement trends in SE Asia--a lot going on here I think (perhaps more appropriate for a future standalone episode than Q&A?)

Sebastien

And what have they done to the railroad exchange at the polish border

Powernap

Generally a video on Ukraine and Russian logistics would be awesome. How the heck do they get that much stuff in? I mean, I see a lot on the A2 Highway, but it would be worth an episode

Daniel K

Haitian Dogs!

Daniel K

Great question

Daniel K

Why is the Bradley getting that much more publicity than other MBTs and IFVs from the west? Performance, numbers or both?

Daniel K

The RUS UKR war is certainly shaping the future military landscape. Where do you already see this materializing in military procurement and strategy? Is there anything special about the Multi Domain Force approach that the Americans are establishing? Is having Missiles and SAM combined really a revolution?

Daniel K

Why has there been so little use of proximity fuse / air burst artillery in this war? We see video after video of 120mm and 155mm shells slamming into soft mud and leaving nearby infantry and vehicles untouched. This is a problem that was solved 70 years ago and it seems bizarre that almost all of the soviet and western stockpiled unguided ammunition has contact fuses.

Tim Warren

Suppose you had the time and the US military budget. What would be your Warhammer 40k army composition?

JackPlague

Perun, could you discuss the AWACS capabilities of various countries as well as any developments in the field? You speak a fair amount about the enabler craft but it may not make the best full length video. Also, if you don't mind, what's your favorite leisure book to read? Thanks for all the awesome content!

Sckor

You've covered defense strategy overviews of all of the nuclear powers except for the UK (And the US I guess but by default a lot of your videos revolve around the US). Will you ever do a UK video or is that too close to Australian affairs to touch?

Leo Stanek

Want to hear more about Emutopia attacking Kiwiland.

Beth and Graham Rankin

Although I get the sense he may not be the easiest to work with for some l, I would love to see a Q&A with you and Michael Kofman on whatever relevant topics you both find most interesting.

Doug

Would you have any interest in covering the depth and breath of Russian psyops? With the recent announcements around Tim Pool and RT, is the topic easier to report on?

Doug

Could you do analysis of South East Asian nations such as Indonesia, Philippines, or Vietnam? Perhaps the alliance ASEAN may make for an interesting topic?

William Le

how the allies allowing storm shadow, etc. to fly free in russia changes russia's tactical planning. bonus: putin's meaningless red lines. russia can't even beat ukraine, how in hell could they take on nato?

Erik Stubblebine

Hi, a few questions: - Have you thought to do a "war game simulation" style video? For example EU vs Russia, etc. Bonus points if you can squeeze it in ppt :) - Are you planning to reassess the EU military industry? A lot of words were said in 2022 but nothing seems to have happened since then. Or just post a comment "I was right" on the german military video. - What is the strategic situation with Emutopia and Kiwiland?

Ivan Dimitrov

There's been a lot of talk here in the UK this week, first to say that the restrictions on ATACMs and other long range systems WILL be lifted to allow UKR to fire into Russia, then that the restrictions mMIGHT be lifted and then overnight that the restrictions WILL NOT be lifted. From an armchair general's perspective I say get on and give UKR everything we've got and let them decide how best to use it. But the US and UK government's appear to be worried about Putin's threats regarding red lines being crossed (again). Do you think there's more to all this than meets the eye (maybe other, better weapons on their way?) and what are the implications do you think for the conflict as a whole?

Charles May

What type of changes in term of maneuver warfare have emerged in Ukraine? The preponderance of defensive positions, minefields, dragon teeth, precision fires and, ofc, drones, how did it change the equipment and tactics that attacking formations use to breakthrough and exploit?

Michele Mancioppi

Are you planning to do an analysis on the smaller players in east europe? I'd be particularly interested in Romania. Thanks!

Madalin Cojocariu

AFAIK the largest tank gun currently in development is the Rheinmetall 130mm, which in thoroughly untechnical terms is looking to deliver 50% more blam than the 120mm. As to the reasoning behind this, be nice to know. At the end of the Cold War I think the West was muttering about a 140mm gun and the Sovs about 152mm but I think both got shelved as part of the peace dividend. The Russians have made noises about 57mm on AFVs and the West is up to 40mm in places.

Phil Wellings

Is there any change that has made peace or at least ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine easier? Who, if anyone, has enough standing with both parties to make negotiations possible?

Eric J Sullivan

When it comes to unmanned systems moving forwards, the rate of development (and the number of different roles these systems can fulfil) seems to be accelerating. Assuming the above is correct, I have two questions: 1) What roles in a military seem least likely to be replaced by unmanned systems? 2) Does an increased number of unmanned systems significantly reduce the manpower requirements on the battlefield, all other things being equal?

Sanguine

I do not understand the future role of the MBT. Question(-s): Is there a future for MBTs? Or have/will they become niche (super?) heavy tanks (WW2 Tiger1/2 style tactical application)? And therefore less general relevant for all militaries (especially the small ones)? Argumentation/thought process: Tank rounds are slowly moving towards 155mm territory. IFVs are at around 50mm(?) auto cannons (and likely going up), and operationally can soon (if not already) be considered light tanks. Are we likely to see an economy of scale situation, where haubitzers double as direct fire tank destroyers? And based on short-range IFV v Tank engagements show the IFV cannon penetrating tank armour. Also considering anti-tank man and/or IFV portable missile system, then why would you ever send 4 Abrams to do a job 4 Bradley's could probably do better? It seems we need more guns on self-propelled multipurpose haubitzers, a quantity of different sizes of IFVs, but what is the future role then of the tank? Might we literally remove the gun and turret from it, and deploy it as a rolling battle ram? With a focus on armour, drawing fire, and mine neutralisation? Because as far as I can see IFV is for mobility, haubitzer is for big gun, and the only purpose for the tank seems to be as a giant turtle. And as a turtle the turret is a engineering vulnerability? Especially against manually/precision-AI guided missiles/drones. What role/function do you think the MBT and tank in general will have in future combined mechanised assault operations? Compared to now and the past? Especially for smaller armies, who might want to nor have 4 vehicles of 27 million models. Is the future tank going to be just a niche product for larger militaries backed by a larger industrial base? Because currently it seems concentrating on static defensive quantity on a vehicle (armor) is pointless, as the fight is pretty much lost if the thing coming at you is not dealt with before impact. So you might as well just have more utility IFVs than MBTs? Or?

Alec Pearson

I'm interested in the threat to global trade from choke points being closed. Today, I read that the UK littoral defense force is rounding Africa rather than face the Houthi threat. I can see that would be a logical rerouting; the Houthis would be quite likely to target UK military ships, and defending themselves would require firing expensive missiles... but still! Egypt must be feeling the squeeze from revenue loss from the Suez canal as well. And what about choke points near China?

Jane Walerud

Perhaps revisit Russians armor supplies in a few weeks? Their tank losses have dropped recently. Of course, Ukrainian too.

Jane Walerud

Andrew B asked how a country go about restarting production lines and I think that's a really good question. Relating to that, I'd like to know the reasoning behind ordering a fixed amount of say IFV's or tanks and then shutting the production or even the entire factrory down as the Brits did with the Challengers. Did people really think that you could fight a war with 300 MBTs and never need replacements?

Jan Michael Johansen

Looking forward, when the war is over, how much money is required to rebuild an economy and where does it come from? How long will it take and what is the effect on the politics, both in the country and in the rest of the world?

Danny Pike

Asking for a friend who first introduced me to your channel: Do you think that NATO in its role as a defensive alliance would have persisted without the Russo-Ukrainian War prompting its relevance?

Strawberry GS

As a follow-up to this question: I know you have an audio person, but do you make enough to pay them to take it to the next level? The audio sounds great from my computer, but when I put one of your episodes on my TV, it "buzzes" in a less than pleasing way, making it less suitable for watching like a TV program. I don't know what additional processing is necessary to improve that experience. Normal TV doesn't buzz like that of course.

Strawberry GS

I remember hearing that China had banned video game playing -- is that still true? And how would that affect the average unit's readiness to operate FPVs?

History student, thinking about economics minor to go with conflict studies, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions for reading regarding war economics? Ta! PS. Happy to take suggestions from the crowd too :)

Chel

What are the different ways one way attack options might develop in the next decade?

Bbyh

How do countries go about restarting production lines that had gone fallow since the end of the Cold War? We didn’t exactly freeze workers and manufacturing equipment in time, and the skill gap combined with assets that are no longer there must make replacing equipment challenging.

Andrew B

It would be fascinating to hear a summary on your primary/most-reliable sources of open source intelligence WRT defence economics and current events in active war zones. What's your process of verification and fact-checking before something makes it into a presentation?

Ashley Felton

What if the Vampire system really did fire Von Carsteins? Or more seriously how would blockades affect China and America's war industries?

Jeckl

How does supply actually work in modern militaries? I feel like games have models that must be very poor simulations, I'd love to be able to better understand what it means in situations where supply is limited, both when a maneuver force is ahead of its supply like the early Kursk offensive, and what it means to have a river crossing required to resupply troops in an area.

Demonsthenes

Perhaps you could consider the sometimes poison chalice that aid packages can be (particularly those in the form of loans, but also the strings attached to them, expectations regarding votes in the UN, etcetera) So, I guess my questions might be, "How strongly should nations in need avoid accepting foreign aid?", and, "How might such nations avoid falling into a situation where aid must be accepted? / How does a nation position itself to only receive aid without onerous conditions?"

Dave McDonald

Since Battletech was mentioned, what about Warhammer 40k or any other tabletop games? On a more serious note, what aspect or development of this war has been the most surprising to you?

Nicholas Aubert

I know you were originally a videogame strategy channel but have you thought about a presentation combining the two? Like history of wargaming or wargaming in terms of practical military strategy?

LeaderTitan

During some interviews, like in the GASCC24, Justin Bronk warned that russia might attack a NATO country in 2028 (during the Davidson window). Do you believe it is possible/likely considering the russian war economy (and the European one) ? And will there be another interview with the professor Justin Bronk?

Crafty

You've dropped some comments that indicate you are a fan of, or at least have some familiarity with the Battletech franchise. So, my question is: What is your favorite faction in Battletech and what is your favorite Battlemech?

Scott Philipp

A video analyzing attacks on of industrial/commercial assets by state AND non state actors with maybe a focus on the effects of those attacks and the efforts being made to mitigate the damage or stop those attacks entirely.

Ian Howerton

In an older video you briefly mentioned a 1994 Treaty that guaranteed Ukraine's borders would be respected if they gave up their nuclear weapons. Russia, the US, and UK all signed. Could you explain why this doesn't apply? Could the US use that treaty as a justification to send US forces to Ukraine's defense?

Strawberry GS

What is your go to recipe for a good BBQ session?

Since we see cheap of the shelf or rudimentary drones used on such a wide scale in Ukraine, do you think Nato members are going to procure different types of them in the millions now?

Marco Wenner

If Putin dies or walks away I don’t understand why some people think the war ends. Is it hope or a lack of understanding that only the hawks have the power base or “charisma” to make it work?

What are the possible wrong lessons being learned by Western nations from the fighting between Ukraine and Russia either based upon what they are procuring, military structure, changes in doctrine, etc.?

How does the nuclear taboo apply to nuclear power in conflict zones. Is it good or bad. Are they off limits thus safer from Intentional attack or just another infrastructure target.

How do defense economics of non nation state actors work? From drug cartels to Hezbollah.....is it just get whatever falls off a truck or is there more of an operational plan to these types of things

Mike Winter

What is the cost of keeping nuclear weapons up to date? Specifically: can Russia keep all their nukes functioning of they keep bleeding money. They have rattled their strategic arsenal quite often the last few years but how long can they keep doing that?

Peter Möller

Considering recent activity in the South China Sea could you discuss the similarities and differences between Navies and Coast Guards in terms of policies considering and how it affects budgeting and equipping?

John Cryer

What are examples of countries with 'good' defense economic policies and why should they be examples of what to emulate?

Mike Winter

I would agree on this as a subject. Russia is trying to stay in the Great Power game without Great Power resources, and we can look at the post-imperial UK to see how well that works out.

PnkPnthr

What is your formal education?

Linus Andersson

To be honest, I asked these questions to myself, especially the second one, and i was unable to imagine what would inevitably stop the killings and hostilities..

Alexis Jouanneaux

Would you be interested in commenting on arms import/export trends among nations that aren't typically considered major players in the industry? I've got a particular fascination on Brazil but I'm sure there are plenty of others as well.

Haji_Bob

I know that you are primarily focused on defense technology and various military/war machinations on this channel, but based on some of your commentary I'm assuming that your expertise also includes quite a bit of foreign policy/politics outside of these considerations. Would you ever consider doing any content that focuses more on various foreign policy and politics topics (as opposed to sticking with the continuation of politics by other means)? I'm a really big fan of the "destroys armies" series, and I would love to see something in that vein regarding foreign policy. Thanks for all that you do!

Jessica Fields

Have you considered releasing your content also as podcasts, to make it easier to consume for people who prefer to catchup on it during commute/housework/etc?

Marcin Kwiatkowski

Good subject, but as a Brit I'd argue WW1 killed off the Empire, it just took a while to die and WW2 provided the full stop (or period for those on the other side of the Atlantic).

Phil Wellings

Is the west ramping up its military production enough so that the west could support Ukraine so Ukraine could push out Russia from within its legal borders, including Crimea?

Erik

How do you balance the availability of information from the large intelligence community in your subscriber base, with the risk of going full War Thunder?

Brad Sattler

Given the global interconnection of high-tech manfacturing, how do you view the risks to the defense industrial bases of the various major powers in light of rising trade tensions over tech-related products like semiconductors and software? What trends do you see in the powers' industrial bases vis-a-vis securing their supply chain versus ensuring access to the latest tech?

Ian Dundore

Do you believe that in the Russian military there are those that understand that using nukes would be making a bad situation worse? That there are those in the command structure that would disobey and halt a Putin ordered strike?. After all, Russia is downwind

Maddogpilot

WW2 effectively ended the British Empire. Will the hollowing out of Russia by the wat, both military and economic do the same to the Russian empire? Is there a strategic benefit to the west to drag the war out, specifically to achieve the maximum damage and could this have been the US strategy all along?

Is it possible to estimate the state of Ukrainian and Russian basic equipment availability, small arms, uniforms, first aid consumables, etc? I have not seen videos of rusty AKs in a while, while I have heard that Ukraine is having troubles supplying new units with decent uniforms and helmets. What is the availability of such things on the open marked for a government and how much of a premium would weapons dealers be able to ask from a customer in need?

Arkonos

Electrical transformers could be a critical weakness in American or Australian society. We typically manufacture them only at need, and they have very long lead times and our entire capacity is on the order of 1% per year of the total installed. If a Carrington event (or a Miyake event!) damages too many at once, it will be very hard to recover. I will let the Youtube historians tell us the actual success of the Allied attacks on ball bearing manufactures in the German Reich during WW2. At the risk of giving away the game to the evil empire here, can you give us other examples of critical targets in our current civilizations? Are there any tighter physical items than chips, bearings, or transformers? Are there any tighter locations than the Bab al-Mandab Strait? Can we get the last couple of hundred thousand healthy Russian male civilians hooked on TikTok? If we bombed a certain subset of Iranian police stations, would the population be able to burn their burqas and take their country back? Your viewers might be able to write the definitive list, (the Russian Trans Siberian railway can be severed at one bridge at Omsk, the Mosul Dam, three tiny islands that hold back a critical Antarctic ice sheet.....)

In Lies Destroy Armies, you alluded to org design features that allow whistleblowers to do whistleblower things but without allowing someone to hold an org hostage if they’ve got an ax to grind. Can you go into more detail (specific examples, unclassified case studies) of design features that meet your approval?

It seems Russia is getting several munitions from N. Korea, Iran, and China. It seems Russia would be in a severely degraded position without Iranian drones/missles, Chinese tech and gear, N. Korean artillery etc. What are Russian capabilities without their support?

Can you discuss start up and innovation space in defense industry? - What sort of startups emerged as drone and robot manufacturers? (Such as flame thrower dogo drones) - How can you start your own start up and be successful in defense industry? - To which degree does the lobbying play a role? Can you succeed without lobbying? - Would you be open to advise and consult other people to start their own defense start up and grow business? - Can you compare new military start ups in different regions, China, EU and US? - What are your thoughts about Nato Diana accelerator program? How successful is it? - All defense contractors have hardware products. Are there only defense Software products and what are they?

The forces of Khorne are using dragon fire drones to attack the armies of the Orks. In 2024 this is an accurate statement. How crazy are the times in which we live?

After we have witnessesed huge equipment and manpower expenditure with very limited gains in Ukraine, do you think it would be any different for Russia if it would attack some neighbouring countries, e.g. Baltic states and/or Poland?

Are there any modern conflicts that you feel are underrepresented in the news media (Myanmar, Congo, Sudan) relative to the influence they have on the international community?

Aidan Finn

A topic you seem most famous for could you do a topic on Russian corruption past and present - ie how corruption has changed since the war began and its present effect on the war in ukraine

Alan Berk

How is Ukraine rebuilding it's war factories and what capacities and who is helpung then I seen some licensing deals but would like more in depth as nything you could come up with on russian efforts in addition to what you have already covered

David McKee

I find it odd, given Trump's wildly unpredictable history and habit of saying things he doesn't follow through on, that some assume it's simply a given that he'll immediately throw Ukraine under the bus if he wins the election. There was a podcast interviewing Ben Hodges (who's been quite critical of Trump, though the subject hasn't come up much in his collabs with Perun) where the host made that assumption and even General Hodges immediately said it was far from a given. Then again with blatant isolationist JD Vance on the ticket who knows.

Josha Inglis

Two years ago you made an offshoot video about a topic you are quite knowledgeable of (All Bling, no Basics) and now you're one of the most respected lecturers watched by millions on Youtube. How do you feel about that?

Martin

You ingest a lot of highly technical documentation that I would assume is difficult to verify independently. My question is about that assumption, if you see some fact or figure in a report and something "feels inaccurate" about it, how do you follow up? Relatedly, I recognize you use high integrity sources for the most part, but also that there can be a lot of fuzziness. How do you calibrate your trust in a quoted statistic? Is it more than a combination of your accumulated experience and a gut feeling?

AlliterativeArts (Eric Faust)

Are there any less talked about historic conflicts that presented interesting logistics or other scenarios that you would recommend to learn about?

How do the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East alter China's calculus for a cross strait invasion? Does Russia being tied up in Ukraine outweigh the benefits of US materiel and bandwidth depletion?

Have you seen any other outlets raise the issue of what happens to the Russian economy and society after the fighting stops assuming Ukraine is substantially or wholly intact so Russia can't consolidate the new territory/population and possibly attempt another territorial acquisition.

Roj Cowles

If you could make up a force composition for Australia, what would it look like?

JanPeter van der Velden

You've shown some familiarity with the Battletech setting before with a few choice jokes and references. As someone with a background in the industry, how do you feel about Battletech's representation of military procurement? It's quite unique, at least among wargame settings I know, in allowing bad units to exist in canon for a variety of logistical, bureaucratic or just stupid reasons. Does it ring true, or is it a bit oversimplified and silly?

I’d like to hear your thoughts on BRICS and whether you think it will continue to grow and to challenge NATO/other global alliances. Also whether you think it’s high authoritarian membership will cause tension with other organizations that share members with it.

Dexter Pardon

How do you think the victor in the us election will affect the rate and volume of financial and military aid to ukraine? I suspect if Trump wins he will continue to fund ukraine and the fact that it's Trump signing the cheques will make it so the Republicans are less resistant towards it and it'll grow less popular with the democrats since its not their guy. And what do you propose should be thrown against putin and Russia when the new president is sworn in?

The US Military has been trying to develop lower cost cruise missile designs through efforts like the Enterprise Test Vehicle project. How do they intend to lower the cost of these standoff munitions? Are they anticipating savings through streamlining the design or production process? Not if you want to fly it that high up. Shaheds are within reach of manpads. And if you start flying over Russian controlled airspace at 3000m alt, Russian airforce can shoot you down with onboard cannons / short range missiles. They cannot do that if you’re above the front.

Q: Can you forsee a situation in which NATO troops would move into the Western and Northern areas of Ukraine and what trigger do you think would cause this? Thank you (I myself see this as incredibly unlikely, but I do find it a fascinating conundrum). This is more a video idea but I would be interested to see how logisitics work in Ukraine specifically and a active war zone, i.e difficulties, types of transport, outrunning your own supply etc.

ODHD1122

Do you think Ukraine could try to force Russia to expend large SAMs & expensive Air to Air missiles by flying large, cheap decoy drones at medium to high altitudes above the front? Say by building something that looks like a TB2, flies like a TB2, but does nothing else, and therefore is very cheap to produce. Force the Russians to shoot it down with an expensive missile (because it’s too high for manpads and too close to the front for Russians to use cheap air-to-air missiles), and if they refuse to take the bait, then you can start using TB2s in attack roles again.

Filip Slovak

Are we seeing a global conflict in its first stages? Global conflicts usually start local and I’m not sure the increased strain in global diplomacy and potential next hotspots might bring the rest of the world into the edge. I would say that Putin mostly succeeded in making the Ukraine conflict basically localized to the point that hardly any country besides Europe and the US (plus Japan, ROK and Australia) take any stand in it
