Longer topic list poll

G'day all.

As promised, I've rolled out a much longer list of topics under consideration (this still isn't all of them) for feedback and voting. Suggestions are of course also welcome.

I have generally tried to group these into clusters, though the list is still a little chaotic.

Note that general coverage of the Ukraine war is not included on this list - as I intend to maintain those updates as regular - but driven by substantial changes in the nature or status of the war, rather than just every x weeks. So we will be covering Ukraine frequently - I just can't say exactly when in advance.

I'll also be trying to get to some of my patreon message backlog this week at long last (fingers crossed).

Serious and sincere thanks to all of you - and happy Easter to all of you celebrating it.

Comments

Would love to see a defence strategy - ROC in the future!

Dominic Jarman

So many good choices! I'm interested in all of them. I enjoyed the first Arctic video and am looking forward to future ones.

BSMEengineer

Blocking GPS would be an interesting topic!

Adina Jägbeck

if you make a Canadian nation study, I will directly reference your video when complaining to me elected representatives. do it. for democracy. do it.

Yeetman 216

Perun, is there any chance you can upload the audio track of your videos as a podcast? I love your material but sometimes I would love to be able to listen to it on commute or while at work.

Alan Lai

If you do the US Marine changes, could you go into Boyd and the OODA loop as well? That started their changes in the 90s and got us here. I'm sure a lot of us know the what of the changes, but an economic and procurement view of these changes hasn't been done to my knowledge.

Brad Sattler

I would like to see an IFV Bradley in Ukraine 2.0 update?

Thomas Bernecky

Thank you so much for the video on Iran's Missile Strike on Israel. I asked about it when I joined and was delighted to see it hit YouTube immediately. Great job treating the subject with intelligence and humor. You synthesize vast amounts of publicly available sources to tell me things I didn't know.I'll be curious to watch the end of next week's video and find out if it got demonetized or not. I find everything you talk about fascinating. What I'm most curious about is the war in Gaza. I'd love help separating propaganda from visually confirmed kills. I'd love to know what's really happening. You might not want to touch that though, and if so, I understand.

Strawberry GS

Being an intentionally underinformed American, I often passively think of Iran as being a backwards near medieval theocracy, but that's really not the case, and as new information continues to come out through you or new media outlets, it's hard to understand their abilities without understanding their productive capabilities. I'd love to see videos like the recent one on US dib but focused on Russia, China, and Iran.

Trevor Rooney

You can change your vote any time.

Stefanie Butts

After reading the War On The Rocks article about Canadian military spending, and listening to the Insider podcast from the same publications, the authors used the 'Death Spiral' to speak about Canadian underspending on their defense. If I could go back I would change my vote and add a desire to hear your view points on Canadian Military spending and their armed forced in general.

Gil Grimes

Given recent events and what pops up on the gaming channel from time to time, it is high time to take a look at missile interceptors and saturation strategy. (Not in the topic pool at the moment.)

Trees

I'm surprised Force Design 2030 got as many votes as it did, pleasantly surprised though, I'd love to hear your insight into it

Honest Lyre'ed

I am very interested in a Perun deep dive on Force Design 2030.

Luke Vafiades

Well, I think we know what Perun's next video will be about.

Katana Del Nacht

I think Perun should make a video about the Norwegian NH-90 helicopter procurement. Preferably with a lot of sracastic nuggets. (Please, do not forget electrical wires straight through bulkheads without any cuffs as protection from wear in the drilled holes.)

Ole Bjørsvik

Great call.

Joe Vandevander

I'd like to see a Taiwanese defence strategy video :)

Mike-hunt

The Arctic????? Not my choice but I am curious…

Chariton Iosifides

My apologies for not pledging with Patreon earlier. It struck me how much I look forward to your content (and other creators) and how little I watch most of my streaming services. Hullo from the US. Loved the episode, (are these episodes?) on the Baltics. 3 adoptive children from Latvia. It is one of my favorite places in the world and very, very few Latvians, want to see the return of the Russians. When we were there over Easter in 2016, the Easter Parade in Riga was mostly military. Mostly Latvian units of course. I was very proud to see the US and other NATO contributions participating. The Latvians noticed and cheered for them. I can only imagine the reception they would get now. Keep up your phenomenal work.

John Bryant

Once again, I am extremely impressed with the width and depth of your interests and expertise. There are so many of these topics I look forward to seeing your input on.

Scheraus

I have noticed lately a lot more postings of supposed "mouthpieces" echoing North Korean talking points in my news feed (though possibly just an effect of an algorithm). I am curious about not just the status of their military, but also what rumblings there are about possible North Korean destabilizing actions in the near future (whether simple fear-mongering threats or actual military actions).

Scheraus

So many of these sounds neat. Very excited for the reindustrialization topic. I guess a side question would be whether it is fair to criticize the US and Europeans each for their inability to supply basic 155 to Ukraine after 2 years.

T V

A perun defence economics analysis of North Korea would be so interesting. Its maybe not super flashy but there’s so much garbage analysis of NK military capacity in both overstating and underestimating it’s military capacity

Aron Hellsten

Honestly all of these sound rad; do whatever you're most passionate about.

RitalinGamer

So few votes on space 😭

Siebe

I limited myself to 4 votes, but would eagerly watch a 1 hr Perun video an any one of them. A good year ahead indeed 😁

Andrew Maltby

The Arctic topic is super interesting and one where the analysis would suggest NATO and the US in particular are behind the Russians in capability (they operate nuclear icebreakers ffs).

Leo Stanek

The impact of 'rogue' countries like Hungary, Slovakia (and Turkey?) on the effectiveness/cohesion of NATO?

Paul Haynes

The role of China in the Russian invasion of Ukraine? Are they doing much to support Putin now? Could they become more involved soon/later - if so, what would/could trigger that? Do they see Russia as a failed world power, which won't matter post-Ukraine, or as a useful future partner? How has the Ukraine invasion affected their views on Taiwan and its future? Do you see China developing as a 'traditional' world power (like the US and USSR), or will the fact that we now live in a very different world to post WW2, and the amount of trade China does with the rest of the world, mean they will be a very different type of world power?

Paul Haynes

so many good subjects here.. going to be another good year of content it looks like :)

Bolloxim

It was already suggested but I would appreciate a video about 2014 in depth.

Alexis Jouanneaux

As an American I am particularly interested in Defense Reindustrialization. We're taught in history class how important US industrial capacity was to winning WWII, so now that the industrial advantage (seemingly) sits squarely in China's court, I worry about our ability to sustain an extended war in the Asia-Pacific if it were to break out.

Jackson Miley

Defence strategy - Canada. Would be the shortest video ever and not sure if we would hear you crying or laughing more than any other video ever done; it certainly would open you up to epic sarcasm against our governments malfeasance and dereliction of duty to its military and citizens. Hell, at this stage the USA could take us over and we would be happy about it. Russia in the arctic, Trudeau would give it to the USA and call it a day as reparation towards global warming. Conscriptovich would literally drive across Canada without interference because our police and military is so inadequate that all they would need to do is set off forest fires along the way and they would be so busy dealing with that, they wouldn't know what to do with a take over.

Robe Pettigrew

It's probably useful just to act crazy enough to actually do it without necessarily having a serious intention to do so. Keep Russia guessing, keep Russia nervous. 'Cause it's sort of a wild coin toss calculus to make: On the one hand, it would be incredibly provocative for France to send troops to Ukraine. On the other hand, it would be incredibly provocative for Russia to fire on them. It would not take a lot of French troops to be deployed to upend everyone's thinking: If Russia didn't know at all times where all of them are then it could not really afford to risk shooting or bombing anything.

Jeremy _

What about stuff on UN Peacekeepers? We hear about the blue helmets a fair bit but not like... details on how they function

Lexington Brython

Is there any chance in the long term of a hyper-focused video on the Russian decision to attack Crimea in 2014? I can't help but feel like it wound up being one of the biggest self-owns in history given all the negatives it generated for Russia, but that it seemed like a reasonable idea at the time. I feel like a video really coming to grips with that moment and trying to understand it would help out a lot with understanding the Ukraine War and Russia's ever-worsening geostrategic position as a whole.

Nalikill

Don't forget to Keep the brave Ukraine in your thoughts.

Simon Argall

Finally I have chosen a topic which is interesting to a larger part of the community. I usually try to figure out what might be interesting to the majority but had to give up since I was wrong almost every single time. Defence reindustrialisation would be very interesting to me. The question along the lines will they wake up in time?

Windsurfing Nelson

Why would France maybe want to enter Ukraine war? It’s been suggested coups in African states instigated by Wagner mercenaries could be a reason, associated with access to Uranium.

InfinitePlayer

Have you considered doing a defence strategy on the ROC (Taiwan)? Timeliness aside there may be some interesting considerations around deterrence and asymmetric defense in a largely marine space, especially with the recent example of Ukraine pioneering new naval tactics. Taiwan may have gone in a different direction with their latest PSCs. Also their challenges and possible opportunities in procuring new systems, mobilization, etc and diplomatic relations with allies like Japan, the US, etc.

Petra Turrini

I know it is doing terribly in the polls but as someone adjacent to the industry I really hope you continue the space series, it was an informative viewpoint onto my existing work and just really cool and interesting. Even if it is just tying it up with a second part.

Alastair Cranston

I'm a little surprised the Singapore topic didn't get more votes, I have no Idea what requirements a city state would have on it's military.

vaultbreaker

I would love to be educated on military industrial trends and hotspots in Africa. I feel the continent is often overlooked in the media, particularly some of the wars going on there. Warfighting on a budget brought the military masterpiece of the Technical, are there any other budget mechanisms on the rise?

Guy Dudley

I was kind of hoping there would be an option for a defense exports of China video after seeing your "Global Arms Exports" video today. If that ever strikes your fancy, or if you can find sources, then an informal vote for that as well.

Stephen

😆

Teresa Benson

As always, all the choices are excellent. However, I did find some to pick over others. The Arctic was my first pick, and that one seems to be popular with others as well. I took a tourist trip to the Arctic Svalbard, and that was interesting to learn about. It belongs to Norway, but they cannot stop those from other countries setting up shop. And, I believe the Russians have done just that. We were told it is the only treaty signed at Versailles after WW1 that has survived. The arctic may be why Putin made comments about getting Alaska back. I still remember the video of a reporter asking a government spokesperson about this. He was surprised, but was clear "they are not getting it back".

Laura Davis

Does patreon voting support some sort of voter side points allocation system? I would like to vote for lots of your options but I'd also like to prioritize. With the available system I end up voting "all the above" which really is not helpful, or leaving untouched some that I would like but are lower priority.

Fafhrd 002

Perhaps a tall order, but I'd actually enjoy a video covering "hotspots" in term of potential global flashpoints of conflict and crises, in terms of shipping, supply chains, and other areas and evets that can destabilize or are destabilizing world trade.

ConscriptDavid

Voted for 4 items, one other thing i really like as an topic is why and how countries like Egypt and Jordan have so much equipment and big armies. Why do they have them, how do they afford them, and what is the use of these in peacetime.

Theo Keizers

I don't know if this is up your alley, but I've wondered why Ukraine doesn't seem to make an effort to take out the trains that Russia uses to bring supplies as far west as possible. There are a limited number of train lines, and I'd like to think that since trains aren't jet planes, it wouldn't be that hard to have train spotters along some of the main lines.

BigRedDog

My vote is clearly on the reindustrialisation, but I'm also the type of guy who voluntarily read the NDIS and the Danish Industrial Strategy (Det forsvarsøkonomiske økosystem) In both the american and the danish strategy there is a large empahasis on dual-use products and getting existing businesses into the DIB

Simon Nygaard Jensen

One other thing I forgot (and I am Vietnamese-American, so I am biased): What do you think about a Defense Strategy video on Vietnam?

Dial H

It was a tough choice between reinvigorating industry and the arctic. industry seems more important right now - but arctic will soon be a problem too. Thank you for your work

Bjarne Damgaard Pedersen

Contesting the Arctic, now that's a cool topic i have not thought of! Also, while i'm here, i yet again beseech the Norwegian government to build towards domestic production of Helge Ingstad II-class submarines.

Winged Gunsknecht

Analysis of the "Axis of Evil".. Russia/Iran/China/N. Korea, etc..How integrated are they? Strengths? Weaknesses? If Taiwan is invaded/blockaded, how will this affect arms support for Russian? Israel takes on Hezbollah, will Iran keep supplies of arms going? I think you get the idea

Maddogpilot

Excellent choices for future topics, but I have a couple of suggestions myself. A deep dive into the cyber domain of warfare, missile defense/BMD, and then if you could do a country defense strategy video of Switzerland, that would be amazing and special (am Swiss). Also, this may be a bit in the past, but I haven't seen that many detailed analyses of the latest Armenian/Azeri conflict in the Nagorno Karabakh, so a video on that might be cool as well. Thank you for all that you do and keep up the great work.

Nathaniel Hillman

Here's a video topic suggestion: The road to world peace and global disarmament - a geopolitical analysis. I was thinking what a peace with russia might look like and how a nuclear disarmament of it would look like (going as far as taking Russia into NATO after the Ukraine war), hence the topic proposal. The next major player would be China where I stopped thinking and actually went to bed ^_^. It would be a fun mental exercise to see what would it actually take

Andrei Mogosan

Another episode on Russian economy, as that seems to be the limiting factor on the duration of the war..

Filip Slovak

“2 Years On” series - revisit a topic you covered previously. Just like you did for the Russian Arms Exports, some videos would benefit from a sequel, in particular Germany.

Filip Slovak

I'm really interested in AI in warfare - because I clearly sleep too well at night right now 0_0 (also, I've been curious about developments in kinetic employments ever since the nightmare fuel of the BBC Reith Lecture on it a few years ago)

Alyster

Iran

John Mieras USN Ret

I'd like to suggest Defence Strategy - Austria. Heck, with how much the Austrian military has supplied their expertise to international media recently, you may even be able to interview someone from the Bundesheer about it.

JennyR

Perun is the most consistent content creator I've come across. Sundays now belong to Perun

Jonathan Werner

Perun, how about a defense strategy video about the Republic of China/Taiwan? Given the recent cross-Strait tensions, a video on how the island is preparing for possible war would be interesting.

Dial H

Further to William's summary: Add bureaucracy, while reducing capability and hope the Americans will continue to protect us.

David Gellatly

To the Canadians, I'm sure the Arctic Warfare presentation will come, be patient.

Michael Waldmeier

I am Canadian, so I would be really interested in your take on Arctic Warfare. I think that one on Canadian Defense Strategy would be your shortest ever: "Add bureaucracy while reducing capability." However, I am voting for "Global Arms Imports" to round out the trifecta of arms sales and trends. EVERY topic on this list is worth exploring, though I doubt that an analysis of North Korea is possible without resorting to the occult. Keep Up The Good Work. Thank you!

William Comars

Continuation of the conscription series: Singapore

Scott

Two years on from All Bling. No Basics and still the most informative hour of the week. I recognize it might be more of a challenge, but would love to see a deep dive into how the planning, force design, and procurement of Naval Warfare assets has been affected by current events and evolving methods. Since the timeline for Naval systems has historically been much longer, from intro to retirement, It would be interesting to see the challenges the DIB is facing. And the new players, TR & SK.

Cap'n Dan Doherty

The Canada one should be “how govts can spend less thanks to location and allies”

CC

You have shown time and time again that what topics you cover are less relevant than the fact that it is *you* who are covering them. I hate this phrase, but it fits; "You do you."

pseudonym_here

How about a video on all the private, ad hoc groups supporting Ukraine, e.g. United24, NAFO, 69th Sniffing Brigage, Ukraine Volunteer Center. What is the scale of these efforts? Are they having an effect?

Kristin

I think this would actually make the UK an incredibly good topic for Perun to look at. On paper, the UK should be a very formidable military power: strong military history with some very well trained forces, a large budget (compared to most countries that aren't the USA or China), two aircraft carriers, permanent at sea nuclear detterant, some very capable land equipment etc. At the same time, the force appears to be creaking at the edges and struggling to hold together with severe recruitment and retention issues. Most analysts looking at the British MOD focus on one aspect or the other but I think Perun would do a very good job of looking at the issues it faces in context to provide a nuanced picture of what is going on

Chris Page

Hi Perun, first time I've voted for more than one! As an Australian, reindustrualisation is quite the hot topic and as the unsinkable carrier for the USMC, Australians particularly should be informed of what they're up to. Singapore is vital to us also; They're all great topics. I'm not sure people in the southern hemisphere quite get the importance of the Arctic though, particularly with all the tension around the Suez and climate change affecting Panama. It may soon be as contested as the Tibetan plateau is now - who knows. Great topics all and I enjoy your insights no matter what the subject.

rob F

I read somewhere that Mexico's international defense strategy is "We will either fight the US, and will absolutely lose, no matter what we do. Or we will fight Guatemala and will absolutely win, no matter what we do."

Jeremy _

Lots of excellent topics to cover here!

Jason 360

I wanted to see it shredded by an Australian with a certain sense of humour via slide deck, hence that was a choice for me. Then we could share the link to the political parties as part of the forthcoming election campaign. This would probably be my most important consideration.

Steven-Jackson-re6qm

Im voting for "This destroys armies..." with a suggestion of: Urban warfare/counterinsurgency/ long-term occupation. Israel's report about their last incursion into Lebanon, plus US experience in Vietnam and Iraq is that doing these missions both ended badly AND actually really deformed and damaged those armies. And not just in casualties and lost equipment: These missions are almost inherently demoralizing, politically divisive, and often make militaries themselves domestically unpopular and serving in them voluntarily unattractive. They also tend to elevate the worst sort of officers (either brutal towards civilians or extremely cautious unto the point of being totally paranoid).

Jeremy _

I don't think any of the topics are uninteresting. What I have voted for are the ones my gut tells me are the more urgent or currently relevant ones.

T.F.S.

You've talked about arms exports, orders and stocks of specific countries. Given that the west owns 75% of arms exports, I'm wondering how current stocks + domestic production + imports of countries compare. The reason I'm interested is that I'm worried that the west is fueling the arms race, making the world more dangerous instead of safer. But I can imagine that the expected manufacturing volumes and stocks of Russia & China actually require all this new equipment. I'm not sure how to compare. Does Sipri also track manufacturing for domestic use? I think it would be possible to compile data on a sort of "balance of power projection" based on TIVs. Translating current stocks to TIVs and add current annual TIV deliveries per year, would give a rough "balance of power" graph. There are a lot of caviats to this methods. Though if there are huge outliers, it would be interesting food for thought.

Peter

How about the impact of sanctions on totalitarian states, especially Russia, Iran an Cuba?

Matthias Kraft

Looking at the list, my answer would be 'Yes'

Whitefang

All the topics sound awesome, as an Italian though I can't help but find our current strategic position fascinating, and would love a video on the topic, if/when feasible

OldGuardBard

All the topics sound good. I favor the Arctic topic because I think Perun needs to chill out. ❄️

alexander gaitan

Defense Strategy North Korea sounds fascinating

Andrew Bethards

About the same as it has been since WWII: hiding behind the big bruiser to their south while yelling in said country's ear about everything their doing wrong.

Stargazer

As a Singaporean I'm keen on your take on our military-industrial sector and defence strategies

Benjamin Liang

I'm very much interested to see what Canada's defense strategy might be.

Nick Johnson

Could you please consider doing a "Defense Strategy - Indonesia"

Minion

Have you seen the usmc commercial of the dude climbing a mountain and slaying a dragon? ... that's all it took for me to join and go to Afghanistan, hindsight (best decision I have ever made) changed my direction in life for the best

Dickie Boom Batts

As the UK doesn't actually have a defense strategy in any meaningful sense of the term, there's no point voting for that particular option.

ALLAN LEES

Rebuilding of defense industrial capacity actually might be more depressing and darker than we think, the usa doesn't make anything anymore, outsourcing everything since the Clinton's

Dickie Boom Batts

I think Singapore could be an interesting topic to talk about as despite being one of the smallest country in asia, it is a country which has stood up to global superpowers time and time again. Not to mention it is one of the richest country in terms of gdp ppp per capita(i am singaporean and just think it'd be great to talk about it)

R4ndom

An analysis of the situation in the EU and the European defence industry would have been nice.

Marcel Hajji

An economic look into incentives that work and don't work to getting people to be willing to fight and kill. It is really hard to conceptualize how it can feel to be in a situation where you have such a high chance of literally not experiencing anything in a split second due to combat. I don't want a medal, I just want out of the whole situation. It is hard to put a price on being a soldier and how desperate I'd have to be to do it.

Robert Jarman

North Korea seems like it would be really funny, in a dark comedy kind of way. Meanwhile, Canada, that shit would be just depressing.

just_some_guy

There are so much topics that I would love for you to cover. Btw not related to the poll, is there any convention or forum that discuss defense economics that you (or any of the people reading this) can recommend? A podcast also works

shaked migdal

Rebuilding the defence industrial capacity in the West is the key for Ukraine to win the war and thus shaping the future of Europe and our sons and daughters. Give us the proper tools to press on our politicians to focus on the right thing.

KapitainZino

One day I would be interested in a Defense Strategy for Georgia (countey) video

JudoJoker

You are too good to us
