Doing an "Ask Perun" segment?
Added 2023-11-12 13:46:45 +0000 UTCG'day all - I've been thinking for some time about what I might be able to do just as a little something extra for the channel for the end of a year as a way to say thankyou for the ongoing engagement and support.
One thing I've been considering is taking questions from Patrons and maybe doing a post or a short video trying to answer some of the most popular ones.
Obviously there will be things I can't answer, but if you have a question you've long wanted to ask about me, my work and processes or the kind of stuff I cover on the channel - feel free to post it here (and give the thumbs up to any questions you see that you like as that's the easiest way for me to gauge interest).
Also looking for guidance on how/if I should do this, so please see the poll below.

2023-12-29 06:55:23 +0000 UTCHello Perun, i wish you a happy holidays, I have three questions, what is your methodology for choosing sources, what sources do you value more then others. My second question is what is your favorite books you have, both non fiction and fiction. Finally will you ever make a video solely about the espionage, spy craft on both sides. 2023-12-16 04:53:38 +0000 UTCThe way you explain your topics are logical and therefore I glide through your videos with ease (and excitement; brain stimuli), however, I've tried explaining (some of your) your topics to spread the word, fight disinformation, etc... and I've found that I can't quite recite the thread of the videos. Obviously, they're long and complex topics with countless examples.... How do you go about constructing what you'll say? Is there a methodology that I'm missing (always starting with big picture/history, and then drilling down, specifically in x-y order...) that could help me "learn" your videos by heart? Thx, You. Susanna / Zsuzsanna PS: if you do decide to go the Hungary route, please take care to include the (Ukranian) language laws re the relation to Ukraine, they are essential in understanding what's been* happening -- I say this despite me going around ashamed and embarrassed most of the time when Hungary's mentioned in Ukraine-related videos (all this while loving the country itself). PPS: *=I used past tense as my understanding is that Dec 8th the UA Parliament passed a boquet-law adhering to the suggestions (done decades ago when the first "languag law" / education law was passed and critiqued by) the Venice Comission. My understanding is that it's a breakthrough in UA-HU relations, and that the Dec 14th EU-wide meeting now has grounds ...to get shit done.

2023-12-04 21:23:20 +0000 UTCFuture topic suggestion 'Western Maneuver Warfare vs meatgrinder fixed warfare of Russia / Ukraine. It's obvious the Ukrainian leadership is not straying far from the wasteful tactics of Soviet doctrine. With all the Western / NATO equipment being seconded to UKR one would hope western doctrine could be infused with it. Maybe with some US Mil or NATO SMEs commentary. it's disappointing and costly to see NATO armored equipment frittered away as 'battle taxis' instead of being employed in the crushing breakthroughs it was created for.

2023-12-03 00:38:20 +0000 UTCFirst, thanks for all your great content. My question I would like you to give your opinion on is: Context: Norway has put some of their oil revenues into a fund currently valued at aprox $ 1 500 billion. As a totaly selfish approach I would argue that financing the Ukrainian victory would benefit the value of the fund, as the world economy will grow faster after the russian defeat. Goal: At latest the summer offencive of 2025 clear all Ukrainian territories of russians. Question: What would you consider the best use of 5% of the fund, and could it be enough to significantly influence the outcome of the war? ($ 75 billion used, and the only caviat is that none of it can be used inside Norway to ensure no more inflation. For equipment for attacks inside russia, they have to be sourced outside NATO, and investments inside Ukraine or in non NATO countries would be a possibility.)

2023-11-26 22:42:28 +0000 UTCWhy is the west so slow to provide Ukraine with gear? I get the impression that US and its allies could, if they wanted to, pave Ukraine in current-to-slightly-outdated military gear, and thereby settle this fight rather quickly. 2023-11-23 09:01:12 +0000 UTCGreetings. I’m wondering why you’ve shied away from the topic of Aussie defense economics and/or the AUKUS thing. Your work is well reasoned and thought provoking and I’d personally like to see that sort of disciplined analysis applied to other countries than just Russia/Ukraine. You’ve got a gift, being able to communicate this stuff in an understandable manner, and I’d be very interested in seeing that gift applied a bit more widely. Thanks for what you do. C) why we don't need to measure up to the Americans. D) why it's important to keep up with international obligations. Living in a strategically significant country that's under essentially zero threat from the outside world is an interesting experience. 2023-11-19 15:07:28 +0000 UTCThinking big: I’d like to hear more about the contributions of the US and the NATO/allied countries in comparison to each other and to Russia/its allies. The numbers used will be clarified by your attempts at similar standards of valuation, like acquisition costs vs replacement costs where applicable. Also relation of cost to GDPs, et c. Maybe some about fraction of government expenditure and extent and cost of deficits incurred. Effects of war on GDP and domestic economic growth. Opine on battlefield efficacy, present and future costs of failure. It will be even better if it can be drawn to a conclusion that supports the expenditures for US and the West and can be explained to numbskulls, including our representatives in Congress and the mainstream media before the next election. 🇺🇸

As such, I would rather "let your light shine" as far and broad as possible. It is much needed in the current environment. 2023-11-12 18:53:39 +0000 UTCI always wondered „why now?“ Like why wait for Trump to be gone why dont wait longer to see if there is a way of doung it during US elections etc.

2023-11-12 18:47:08 +0000 UTCI wouldn't be surprised to see Putin using a tactical nuke to drive home a point, since his nuclear sabre rattling has been so useful in constraining the West's response to his aggression in Ukraine - the "bed-wetters in DC" (see https://thespectator.com/podcast/bidens-middle-east-approach-and-is-he-in-trouble-at-home/) would probably unconditionally surrender NATO and the US if that were to happen...

2023-11-12 18:26:29 +0000 UTCMaybe if the video is restricted rather than on YT you would be able to share a little more with us, particularly why YT demonetised your IDF video. That was bizarre and grossly unfair.

2023-11-12 18:22:43 +0000 UTCConsidering your way of working, the kind of sources you use, specific expertise etc., do you think you would you be able to cover historical periods/countries: Napoleonic wars, Rome/Cathargo, crimea war, etc.

2023-11-12 18:13:45 +0000 UTCI would be interested in what role you think robotics will play in military industry in the next hypothetical peer conflict. I know robots can build cars but can they build artillery, tanks, planes, drones etc.
Stefanie Butts
2023-11-12 18:06:12 +0000 UTCI'd be interested in hearing your take on the difference in requirements between a military trying to go from regional to super-regional and then that of the already super-regional military trying to contain it and prevent that expansion. Alternatively, the role of strategic messaging in the lead up to conflicts would be a fascinating topic. This may amuse you but as was heard in the office "In Perun we trust, all others check NGIC." If you ever do merch, toss that on a shirt.

2023-11-12 17:45:14 +0000 UTCQ: In your opinion, should nations do better to justify/educate the public regarding defense economics and budgeting to combat disiniformation regarding the use of resources, how military aid works, etc ?

2023-11-12 17:15:22 +0000 UTCI think keeping yourself as anonymous as possible is critically important. There was a bit of a slip in one of your videos a while back and I would hate for any increase in triangulation. Lots of folks do videos on YT processes, and your R&D methods are secret sauce. I suggest to keep it that way. Cheers!

2023-11-12 17:08:31 +0000 UTCThis might be a very niche topic, Regarding your conversation with A.P. Nielsen, did you talk about the strategic goals in the North Atlantic? And more so the military buildup there. I know it is not his speciality, but he probably knows more than the common man, being an officer in the Kingdom of Denmark. Just curious since i live in the Faroe Islands, and these last couple of years, we have had 2 US Destroyers (First official visit), 2 nuclear subs(1 crew change and 1 med evac to the local hospital) and a bunch of convoy exercises with various european countries. Before this nothing ever happend. Seems like alot is going very fast. Even had a USAF C130 doing a very low flyby through the fjords, like powerlines low, 3 months ago.

2023-11-12 17:04:00 +0000 UTCHi, thank you for the Q&A! I've long been curious of the role and value of tactical nuclear weapons on the modern battlefield. Anti-ship and ASW jump out as the most obvious applications, but if you don't mind giving some pointers/doctrine documents to some more, I'd be fascinated to read them. Are they worth producing to augment conventional forces in the 21st century? PS.: I've been severely overworked, but some Hungarian subtitles are in the works.

2023-11-12 16:38:42 +0000 UTCI would love it if you shared some more about your day to day job and how you have the knowledge you share with us. Obviously, as you said, you can't share everything be it because it's secret or because you don't want to for whatever reason but it's still would be cool.

2023-11-12 16:06:01 +0000 UTCQ: How much do you rely on your own knowledge/what you personally can find, as opposed to asking people you know about the topic and having them help you orient yourself in it. Basically what is the magnitude of human networking behind your work (of course doesn't have to be specific due to privacy)

2023-11-12 16:02:34 +0000 UTCWhile I would be fascinated to learn something about your creative processes and methods, I honestly feel that I get more than my monies worth as things stand. You are rocking two resource intensive web channels and a day job. If you have spare time then just chill.

2023-11-12 15:34:43 +0000 UTCAs someone who is very particular about privacy myself, I can't see this helping any. If you do this, just be prepared to toss about half the questions. Maybe you think you'll have to reveal yourself anyway at some point in order to take advantage of new opportunities (collabs, panels etc). Then it's fine I guess.

2023-11-12 15:23:15 +0000 UTCI would really love an “Ask Perun” segment. I don’t really care if it is released on YT only here.

2023-11-12 15:22:15 +0000 UTCI'd love to learn more about your process. You've been putting out well researched hour+ long videos every week for almost 2 years now and I'm really curious how you maintain that. How many projects do you have in progress at any given time? How long does it take to make an individual video?

2023-11-12 15:16:50 +0000 UTCSo this is Perun so short means 40 minutes. The only reason I voted for posting it only on Patreon was because I prefer short to very short.

2023-11-12 14:47:40 +0000 UTCOnly if you think it makes sense/there is data, but what about flipping the coin and looking at countries that have foreign aid infrastructure dedicated toward international emergencies? I'm thinking hospital ships, portable infrastructure, logistics, etc. Instead of looking at all the sticks used to pursue international interests, what about the carrots? It's harder to gauge the impact of diplomacy but I can't recall anyone really talking about it past a few camera shots of people with thank you signs in the short term. Does it have a social impact? I haven't seen examples/data. I've thought for a while that having an emergency aid system would actually be a valuable diplomatic tool.

2023-11-12 14:28:09 +0000 UTCWill you ever do a video focused on a historical time period? 2023-11-12 14:06:33 +0000 UTCI know Drachinifel does 3 hour plus Q&A videos routinely. His goal is to answer the very narrow questions that pertain to warships (historic) but he also refuses to do the same for modern systems since by definition it is not possible to answer questions with certainty. For modern applications there is a danger of speaking to specifics that are to some degree classified. However, your treatment from an economics view has great value since that typically cuts through the nonsense. So yes, do it.

2023-11-12 13:56:09 +0000 UTCI would actually like a long video, if possible. One of your strengths is the ability to dive deep. I call you The Economist of the war. One of the questions would be, if you were King of the Western World, how would you handle the defense economics? Were would you start, what the next steps would be, etc.

2023-11-12 13:54:43 +0000 UTCHow do you do this format so well? The All Bling No Basics video seemed to be very well done for someone doing a serious format for the first time.
