Topic for the week
Added 2023-10-31 07:08:22 +0000 UTCG'day all.
As noted, I haven't been feeling great but am going in the right direction and should be good to finalise the episode this week as planned.
I have two topics that are close to completion so am putting them to a vote here.
The Indian episode should also release in November if all goes well (I'll include more details in the channel update) which I am both excited and nervous about given it's taken more reading and work than any other episode I've done to date.
I also want to give a broader update on a bunch of stuff for Patrons at the start of each month, but given I'm not feeling great I hope you understand if I post that in week 2 of November rather than week1.
Many thanks to all of you for your support, and look forward to seeing what you think (noting I may abandon democracy as always if I have a compelling reason to do so)

2023-10-31 14:39:08 +0000 UTCThat being said, it seems like crisis are like other forms of pain, you only feel it in one place at a time. The backstory and potential evolution of the various former SSR's would be interesting and germane, especially as, counterintuitively, the tend to the right seems to be softening support for Ukraine. However, I still vote for the Iran option. Unfortunately, the capabilities I would be most interested in would also be the ones that would be hardest to research and quantify. How effective are their Intelligence and Counter Intelligence Agencies. What levers do they have in exercising soft power? Does the ability to provide finance and logistics map congruently onto their ability to influence the recipients? What is their long term strategic goal and do they have

2023-10-31 14:17:43 +0000 UTCWhile there has been a lot of talk about "technical" asymetric warfare: drones vs. tanks and ships, guerrillas vs. conventional forces; there has been almost no discussion of the more fundamental emerging symmetry of values and regimes. That is how do democracies committed to a Western set of values (such as Israel) deal with opponents who reject those values and actually use them to degrade the effectiveness of Western democracies. Whether it is hiding behind civilians, using hospitals and schools as bases or funding or arming proxies to do their dirty work while giving themselves deniability. This clash of values (the Clash of Civilizations as Samuel Huntington described it) is the real and present asymetrical warfare and needs to be directly addressed.

2023-10-31 12:52:04 +0000 UTCThere's a history of talented, brilliant YouTube creators such as yourself getting swept up in their creative success and losing the vital importance of self care. This has sometimes resulted in severe creative burnout and the loss to us of their genius spirits. You do what you need to do to take care of yourself, including taking breaks to renew and restore yourself. We would much rather wait some weeks or even a month or two rather than to lose your creativity entirely. You and your work are entirely unique in my experience and we greatly benefit from what you do. The internet, the world is in great need of the information and objectivity you provide. And we can wait while you lie in the sun or go surfing or hang gliding or whatever renews your spirit and energy. Take care. Erica

Completely unrelated to the above or to the poll, but something I’ve just been thinking about recently: please don’t forget about the space warfare topic moving forward. 2023-10-31 11:08:57 +0000 UTCRest if you need it. Both topics sound fascinating; it just depends on how much you want to get wrapped up in current, fast moving events. Re former Pact nations: Personally I'd rather see a deep dive on a single nation as a case study, rather than a broad tour of the whole Pact. They're not Pact, but I have a personal curiosity about the Croatians. I've done some business with them and, from talking to my contacts I gather their military was in need of reform, (at least a few years ago).

2023-10-31 09:06:19 +0000 UTCThe most important thing regardless of your 'obligations' to the Patreon or the channel is your health and well-being. Videos can wait, your health can't. As someone who works in a hospital, Burnout is a real thing. The topics you cover are very eye-opening and have helped me see the world and thr organisations within in whole new light. What I learn from you, helps me understand why countries behave the way that they do, why system(s) procurement is such a long & arduous process amongst other things. What I'm trying to say is that you make topics that on the surface could be considered 'dry' and 'boring'' genuinely interesting and quite fascinating. Whatever topic you choose to talk about, I know I'll learn something new. But if I had to pick.. Definitely Iran. Given it's history; from being a staunch US ally under the Shah in the mid 20th century to absolutely hating its guts post Revolution (I mean they call the US the 'Great Satan' for Gods sake) and its complicated & antagonistic 'Cold War' with Saudi Arabia . It would fascinating to get a in-depth analysis on why Iran behaves the way that it does from a cultural & geopolitical perspective. BUT before you do that, please rest and take care of yourself.

2023-10-31 08:05:49 +0000 UTCBinkov did a good video on a US-Iran war being sort of a airborne siege of Iran, as the typography makes an invasion almost impossible against a mobilised and motivated force (Iraq x3-4 with more mountains). However that video was in narrow focus, as I believe Iran would likely also use ballistic missiles against Europe and Israel along with sleeper terrorists attacks inside the West (and around the world against Western interests) to fight back, and it all become one giant asymmetric mess. So I am very interested in getting some depth in terms of what IRGC, Quds Force (separating external from internal IRGC), Military, Intel, and Missile Forces (WMD?) can do if it came to war with the West and friends (as nobody else can logistically even hope to project power to invade Iran), and also what they are already doing in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, West Bank, Yemen etc. The IRGC seems to be a very motivated fighting force, but how is the regular military compared to something like Saudi Arabia (expected low quality) and Egypt (expected high quality)? I would even go as far as asking, how many Sunni Arab countries could Iran take in a fight? If neither side got outside help.

2023-10-31 07:47:08 +0000 UTCBoth topics are interesting, but given my heritage and the situation in Ukraine I opt for the former Warsaw Pact. That said, I'm interested in Iran as well : how does a heavily sanction, poorly functioning petroeconomy build a military-industrial complex ?
