Demonetisation
Added 2023-10-18 02:34:44 +0000 UTCHi all - just an update to let you know that the IDF video was demonetised by YT within an hour or so of it going online, which means its future reach and revenue will be severely curtailed.
I was going to make a post on YT in general but settled for updating this much smaller group instead. Since it's been a while since I've talked about what happens which this occurs, here are two quick points:
1- I'll still make a donation as described in the video once I can decide on a charity that is helping, transparent, and non-controversial. That doesn't change just because the video is impacted and the video was sponsored.
2 - Thank you all again for being here, as it is a huge comfort to know that there is always going to be a payoff to cover paying for sound and editing as well as the hours invested even if YT doesn't like the end result.

I have really liked the "forgotten attrocities" and "Real Life Lore - Modern Conflicts" series on there, both folks say they can't put their stuff on YT some of the time. I know it's a smaller pool, but with a larger % of revenue going to the creator. Some folks put stuff on both - just segments are changed or omitted on YT.

2023-10-30 05:37:03 +0000 UTCIf you watch YouTube via a browser, such as Brave, it removes all the ads. This doesn't work any more with other browsers, such as Firefox, as YT spots the ad blockers and won't run until you turn them off (or in my case, not at all, as, no matter what I turn off, YT still thinks I'm running blockers!!). But, at the moment at least, Brave still works - possibly because their ad blocking is built into the browser, not an extension? I've not tried YT with other browsers, but I expect it will spot other ad blockers as well.

2023-10-24 12:42:29 +0000 UTCThe US 1st amendment restricts Congress from passing laws "...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press...", it has nothing to do with public vs private spaces - you're right that it doesn't apply to YouTube, but not on the reason why. Australia has no such constitutional protection but there are roughly equivalent high court rulings.

Honestly, as a local, it was one of the clearest and crispest discussions I've seen of the area in a long while, and it really helped me think about what's happening a bit more systematically. It obviously wouldn't be easy, but I would absolutely love if you could do an analogous video about Hamas. I feel like that's an area that everyone always talks around, and I've never heard a serious defense-economic discussion of them. They obviously don't publicize much, but then, neither does Russia.

2023-10-18 23:21:39 +0000 UTCIt's not so easy to replace what YouTube does at the scale it does it. I'm watching Nebula and I thin it's promising so far, but it's too early to say. If you think about the sheer volume of storage alone that YouTube provides for free to end users, it's quite amazing. Plus analytics, advertising, revenue sharing, attempts at copyright protection, and so forth. How about complying with the different laws of 190+ countries? Headaches! Protecting against abuses of all their systems is a problem nobody knows how to solve yet, despite best efforts and plenty of profit incentive.

For instance (not the case with Perun), if you played someone else's copyrighted music, the video might be demonitized for you, but ads would still play and the ad revenue would go to the artist. In other cases, demonitized could really mean "Ad limited" in which the content you produce is not interesting to most advertisers so YouTube reduces or eliminates your cut of the ad revenue as a signal not to do that anymore, but still plays ads if it can find an advertiser. Essentially, they say it's their platform and they get paid first.

But it is always someone trying to profit at the creator expense. I suspect this was a challenge by someone who did not like what was being stated. There was nothing in the video for this Demonetization . I am waiting for someone to file a class action suit. And someone knucklehead does have two Ks in it.

So where did this decision come from? Do YT have to give their reasons? If so then maybe you could share those with us. What is wrong with the people at YT? There are very few, if any, videos of this , level of intelligence and accuracy, honesty and transparency anywhere on the Net, and yet there are still videos which are biased, full of inaccuracies and hate allowed to be out there. What a slap in the face for the best bloke out there. We, the Patrons, will always be there to support you. Good on you, mate!

2023-10-18 06:51:38 +0000 UTCGiven that YouTube is almost certainly not employing staff to actually watch and evaluate content, this is likely the result of a bot following guidelines that have been set very sensitively. That bot is likely unable to grasp the context and nuance of how you very carefully worked through the content without bias or graphic content. I'm only a minor contributor, but I'll be increasing my monthly donation to reflect the heightened risk of arbitrary demonetisation that you face when covering important but sensitive subjects. Hopefully others will too.

In other words, I doubt it had anything at all to do with the quality of your video, which as always was superb.
