I'm glad you enjoyed the album!! She's really so masterful at what she does and even without all the lore, I do think these songs can fully stand on their own and be interpreted in different ways! What really gets me emotional toward the end are the lyrical parallels to PD in "Tempest" and "Waco, Texas". The "do you swing from your neck" line vs "swinging by my neck in the family tree" in "Family Tree (intro)". Her repeatedly asking "do you hate me" vs "If you hate me please don't tell me" in "Gibson Girl". And probably the one that breaks my heart most: "I swore I'd be good to you" vs "I tried to be good am I no good" in "Strangers" 😭 I'm sad Ethel's story has come to a close, but I can't WAIT to see what Hayden does next. I believe in the future there will be a Preacher's Wife and Preacher's Mother album as well? We shall see!
