Nothing much to add that hasn't been said.... Just 30 minutes of tension being wound up until it breaks. They are all pitch perfect in this; Fry's slightly sinister Melchett when addressing Captain Darling. McInnery's reaction to being told he is going to the front (the haunted eyes and rubbing of his forehead are such simple but believable touches). A figure of fun, re-deemed at the end when we realise he is just a normal man, living a normal life who just doesn't want to die. Robinson's burning anger as Baldrick at the stupidity of it all and his quiet pathos as he recalls those he has lost. Laurie's simple but poignant realisation and fear of what is about to happen. And Atkinson's increasing desperation. There is pure venom in his response to Baldrick's desire to go on all night - "Not with a bayonet through your neck you couldn't!". The mask has slipped for a moment as we see he is at breaking point, his fate, and the fate of his men, sealed. Head in hands and drained.... a bit like those watching. And onto acceptance... with the one line Rowan Atkinson delivered in his normal delivery - Good luck everybody.

2025-10-03 12:29:39 +0000 UTCI can pretty much watch any episode of Blackadder any hour of the day on any given day.. except this one. I think in all of my rewatches, I've only had the strength to watch it fully a couple of times. That ending.. the "The Great War! 1914-1917" line just before they go over the ledge and the picture slows down, is so heartbreaking to me, I cry every time. I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am for this episode, for it was mainly because of it that I learned about the first world war (being Jewish, I was mostly taught about the second..) It is a sign of great art that can comment on life and spark a conversation without throwing blame or making you feel ashamaed for your part in it.
