This is the weakest ep in S2 by a long way but then it is such a high bar that has been set. And, yes some of the jokes are dated but I think they were having a dig at comedians who still used those types of racial stereotype jokes in their acts. Just think it doesn't really land but there we go.

2025-07-01 06:48:49 +0000 UTCBy way of explanation (not excusing it) Yeah some of the comedy didn't age well, but at the time there were still well known comedians, one in particular doing the rounds, getting sitcoms and gameshow gigs when their stand up act was anecdotes about "friends" and most of it was exactly as Blackadder described with added sexism and homophobia. I always saw this as a dig at that brand of comedian, but no way would it be suitable to present it that way today. Some was also commentary on how a some British people behave abroad (and unfortunately still do) Racists however, never got the irony and eventually comedy based on "we're making fun of racists while broadcasting a load of racist rhetoric and are somehow surprised we got a following of racists" was phased out from British TV. Incidentally the "comedian" I mentioned above is still around and turns up on "news" channels like GBNews, TalkTV and the gutter press complaining that you can't tell "jokes" anymore, "it's political correctness/woke gone mad" and is a rentagob whenever someone faces consequences for their bigotry, and has a podcast that's probably in the same vein.
