I also must recommend a few other British tv: If you enjoy Brian Blessed (bless-ed), he does a tremendous dramatic performance in "I, Claudius" as Augustus Caesar, "Yes, Minister" for another witty comedy from the early 80s, and "The Thick of It" for Peter Capaldi since you mentioned Dr. Who and it sounded like you wanted a British show made in the 2000s.

Sebastian Bodine

For a show that "hadn't found the formula yet" according to the showrunners, they still had that core cast. This will be a fun re-watch of the series! I hope you gals are in for the ride!

Honestly Edmund just being a massive dick to everyone he meets for no reason is way funnier than it should be.

According to creator Richard Curtiss the reason S1 is so different is because they were deliberately trying to do a medieval version of "Faulty Towers". And like every other attempt to re-create that show it fell flat. The later series they re-tooled it to just be a historical sitcom which worked brilliantly.

Skyrous

I was too focused on King Richard the 3rd marrying Buttercup to Prince Humperdinck..

Ashtara Levin

Yes. You mustn't skip the end titles early on.

Lincynity

I have a fondness for Series 1 as it was the first I really watched as a kid because of the medieval setting, I also really enjoyed Series 2. But I had to get older and slightly more mature to appreciate Series 3 and 4 (back when there only was Series 3 and 4 and a Christmas Special). And while Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson are amazing writers in their own right, I believe Series 2 onward becomes a lot tighter and wittier due to the involvement of Ben Elton coming on board as a writer. I also insist for Series 1 and 2 ensure you always watch to the end of the credits to not miss the little nuggets/scenes at the end of each episode.

Quick run down on National Treasure Brian Blessed...boxed the Dhali Lama, punched a polar bear in the Arctic, delivered a baby in a park & bit through the umbilical cord, climed Everest over the age of 70. Helped a young Patrick Stewart leave his abusive home & start his acting career at the Bristol Old Vic Stage & Tv actor since the late 50's. Massive animal lover with a farm number of animals at home....What a guy!

Lemmy's Mole

Honestly don't think I've watched series one of this in 25+ years so it's really weird to see it. It's strange just how different the dynamic is as well compared to what came later. I'm looking forward to seeing how the series progresses, while of course looking forward to series 2 onwards.

Chris Devlin

Mannn, I know series 2-4 off the back of my hand no problem. I think i've seen series 1 maybe twice in my whole life. and i barely remember it. I never remembered is being bad per se, just never felt the urge to revisit. looking at it now, i kinda see why. the show has always been goofy, but this is kinda... a lot ahaha. Brian Blessed has my whole heart. A true national treasure in the UK. I saw him once at a con, and bless, hes so old now. But he still has a magnificent presence. that voice and mouth forever unmistakeable. Percy's actor Tim Mcinnerny has an absolutely stacked IMDB. my faves being Gladiator II, Game of Thrones & Sherlock

GillyBean

Of course Peter Cook is the priest in Princess Bride

Robert Carson

Yayy! so glad this is happening 😊 I think I tried watching the first series and never managed to get through the episodes, so this might very well be my first time through. I think it gets a bad rap because in comparison to the next instalments, it is almost laughably mediocre, however it is still well written and well acted and is genuinely good fun

Ashtara Levin

The first series is "The Black Adder" two words, Series 2 on are "Blackadder" one word.

Robert Gendron

Or Santa Claus in The Amazing World of Gumball?

Troy Convers

Lord Percy/-Tim McInnery was the evil businessman who was turned into an Ood in Doctor Who. Baldrick becomes one of the greatest comic characters of all time... but later.

Mark Ten

I'm a big Blackadder fan but I've never actually watched all of this first series. I suppose now is finally the time...

Cedric Bombs

Or that he was the voice of Boss Nass in the Phantom Menace

Martyn Hill

No one's mentioned his role in Flash Gordon yet. "Gordon's ALIVE!?!?"

Troy Convers

Thank you for watching series one, I don't think it's as bad as its reputation, it's just not as good as the later series. Anything with Brian Blessed is always worth a watch

Martyn Hill

I suspect that your hopes will be realised.

Troy Convers

Aw man, it's finally here! The lord of Adders Black, and better still, starting from the much maligned Series 1, which really doesn't deserve the criticism it gets. The only real crime that S1 commits is that the production standards are quite different, in that it's still filmed a little like it's a serious costume drama because of Rowan Atkinson co-writing; not bad, just different. As a result, this generation's Edmund is quite different than his ascendants; approximately 67% more weasley while Baldrick seems to be the brains of the operation. As well as the monarchy play on screen, there's British comedy royalty present and future everywhere you look, Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Tim McInnerny, Peter Cook and...well more to come in future episodes. And the cherry on the cake is beloved British institution Brian Blessed, a man endowed with a voice that can fell forests, charisma that can poke an eye out and a god given ability to chew large chunks of scenery in a single bite. I love that guy. Oh, and check out who does the music - Howard Goodall. He went on to score for Red Dwarf.....

Troy Convers

I will actually be watching this series for the first time along with you two. I tried to watch the first episode years ago, but couldn't make it through alone. With your stalwart accompaniment, I'm certain to be able to weather this first season until it "gets better". This episode had the odd moments, but I can really see why I didn't give it much of a chance the first time I tried to watch it, though most of the anglophiles I know swear by this show. I have actually seen clips of segments from later series I found funny, so I have hopes that I'll get more into it as time goes on.

Raven Stromdans

Shout out to Howard Goodall, who wrote the music both for this and for Red Dwarf.

Vernon Harbin

I don't get the animosity for series 1. I was young when it aired, but I loved it. Like Red Dwarf that came later, it was completely unique. No other sitcom was like it. So a little trivia, in the scene where Brian Blessed (pronounced Bless-ed) smashes through the door, they made a lightweight door to replace the heavy wooden door for the scene. After they filmed it they discovered they forgot to switch the door and realised he'd smashed the real door off its hinges like a frigging baddass. Tim McInnerny who plays Percy was in Doctor Who, he turned into an Ood in Planet of the Ood. As for is it The Black Adder or Blackadder. The answer is yes. 😏

Lincynity

I agree. The first series is fine, but the next three are great. They did the right choice after series 1.

Einherj

Kudos for not skipping the first series. It gets much maligned and it's certainly nowhere near as tight as the latter seasons but there is much here to enjoy. At the *very* least there's Brian Blessed gloriously chewing on every bit of scenery in sight, and a certain episode in this run which stands up with any of the later series . . . But I shall not spoil anything . . . so . . . Silencio! Also, it's interesting to see what changes between Series 1 and 2 and how that gives a very different feel to what is the same basic idea, a historical sit-com.
