For the sake of clarification over the often misused comment section I will state that I am not as grossly offended as I might sound - but Paula, come on.. with the international reach of your Patreons you had to have known this was a contentious statement!!

The choosing of the five was a complete crapshoot, as was the choosing of the song. They weren't picked until it was time to write the episode. Don't be fooled into thinking Moore had some grand plan from the beginning about this, the writers were flinging crap against the wall at this point.

What's a bit concerning about that is I did actually listen to the post-episode. Apparently I just went into complete autopilot.

I don't think they are watching with subtitles on. They turn and talk to each other during the ep and I think missing some very important points.

Yes, I've seen the whole show. And while I think that the small stories and character moments continue to be great, I don't love the direction of the larger story. That's just my personal take and I don't want to get into why because of spoilers.

While "All Along the Watchtower" was a pretty great pick, they should've gone with "Who Could It Be Now"

I'll be honest, I did not recognize the song in the slightest with this cover! But I watched the finale again with my partner (who's catching up just behind us) and they pulled up the Jimi Hendrix version and 15 seconds in I went, "OH THIS SONG!" Hahah - Kat

I think the Dirk Benedict idea was actually NOT about the opera house but it was a concept he toyed with for having Dirk/OG Starbuck stroll out of the Tomb of Athena way back on Kobol after they used the arrow of Apollo to open it

Kat and Paula- you two were just too cute and adorable not knowing the song and the way Kat rocked out to Bear's brother's version of it! Don't worry about it at all, even 20 years ago, the official Sci Fi discussion board was filled with people who had no idea what the song was!

Paula, hard agree on the the way the Starbuck situation was handled; I personally think that there was an easier and far more elegant way to get her to this point and not have her look like a victim.

In the eye of the beholder as they say... I watched this as it aired with a friend and we were both blown away by the cover. I admit that when we listed to the song by itself we were not very impressed, but keeping up with everything on-screen didn't leave a lot left over to evaluate the song itself in real time. Choosing a recognizable song with that Indian (or whatever) influence and the actors saying the lyrics before you could really recognize the song was amazing in the moment. I don't think Kat & Paule got the same experience since they didn't seem to recognize the song, but I think choosing a great song and incorporating it into the lines was very impactful for those who recognized and liked the song.

Dunno if you guys twigged it, but the panicky look Tigh shoots Tory at the end - he's just realised that the person closest to both the Admiral AND the President is a Cylon. If this is another Boomer situation... shiiitt.
Lee's monologue is super awesome and apparently earned him a round of applause from the cast and crew. Romo ditching his cane was a great touch. He so obviously has nothing but contempt for Baltar and barely a passing interest in whether or not he's really guilty. He only cares about the psychology of why people can be swayed one way or the other. His line about Lee being an honest man unlike his grandfather was another good one.
Above all Bear stole the show though. This version of all along the watchtower with the rock opera vibe and an honest-to-god sitar is incredible.

Oh, regarding the Opera House, when D'anna was there in her vision, there were the 6 banners, but the 5 were stood *in-between* the banners. Which is the configuration they had here as well.

Are you standing on the shore, following a set path, or are you in the stream, following the currents, going with the flow? Or are you in both places?

All Along the Watchtower was not used in the original. It's just a Bob Dylan song. However, if one were to listen to RDM's commentary for the S1 finale, Moore stated that one of his ideas was for Gaius to go into the opera house, with "All Along the Watchtower" playing in the background and instead of Hera, he sees a man. That man would've been played by Dirk Benedict, the man who played Starbuck in the original series, and he'd hold out his hand and say, "Hello, I'm God." So Moore was already toying with the bonkers ideas that early on.
Obviously they didn't go with that and Kobol's Last Gleaming is amazing, but Moore had a fascination with "All Along the Watchtower" for some time.
Reading just a bit about that song, it's a very abstract tune. It has potential biblical references in it, readings that it's about mankind's survival and their sin and worthiness... so I can see why Moore felt it had an application to his show. He also liked the idea that it was a song from US, and not something created in the BSG universe, but something recognizable as an Earth song and the questions that it would raise. So it was chosen with artistic intent and not just on a whim of "I like that song, put it in!"
Syfy also offered to get the rights to the Hendrix version, but Moore opted for an original cover, written and performed by Bear McCreary's brother and his band.
It's definitely a contentious finale, because it firmly signposts the show breaking away from the grounded sci-fi the first 2 seasons promised and entering a more ethirical, spiritual phase as the Weird increases. And some people don't like that. They prefer to be rooted on the shore with defined parameters and easily followable paths, where others like to jump in the stream and go with the flow, where ever the current takes them.

I do feel like the show is starting to go a little off the rails at this point, but I truly love Tigh's little speech where he says, no matter what, he chooses to be Saul Tigh and if he dies today "that's the man I'll be." That theme of choice and who we choose to be today being the most important thing is one that really resonates with me. We get it with Athena, we got it with Kat and here we get it with Tigh.

A game of two halves, Clive.
The conclusion to the trial arc is everything you would want. Romo being Romo, Gaius weaseling his heart out, and Adama and Lee keeping their hearts out of it. Bill's bias threatened to cast a taint over the trial that could have provoked a huge miscarriage of justice, and all to spite his son one more time. But Lee's speech about forgiveness worked a double message without rubbing Daddy's face in it. The bloodletting is immense and that speech is a watershed.
Even a charismatic bastard like Baltar is well, kinda the victim in this as Romo's opening gambit stated. What could he have done differently? And what possibly made a moral man like Gaeta perjure himself on the stand? Oh, that will be explained, and it's a good one.
God, I hope Lampkin is the Fifth as I'd take any reason to keep him around, but we can kinda make an educated guess as to who it is now. Well if you've been paying attention...
And then just like that, the second half of the episode jumped the shark so hard it high fived the crew on the ISS on the way down. Yes that's not a popular opinion, but it is mine and I will defend it with Romo-like zeal.
The reveal of four of the Final Five? Could have gone with a lot of choices, but the rationale for these picks do get explained, so I'm fine with it, Tyrol especially. But the song choice? Ron, you had Bear on speed dial to make a memorable, original song that could have been retconned as to why it was significant, but was chosen just because MOR Moore liked the tune.
For fuck sakes. 🤦🏻♂️
Then to make it worse, he gets Bear to make a cheesy cover version; like making the best pasta chef in the world buy in from a store. As such, the execution of the reveal almost reduces a great moment to being boring, artless and laboured. I hated it in 2007, I hated it in 2009, I hate it now. I almost quit watching this series twice before and once again I feel like bailing over it.
At least the Starbuck reveal was cool, and they didn't spoil the reveal by putting her name at the start. Unless she's just Lee's Head Kara...

Fully agree – the Ron Moore episode was great (and some of the earlier ones are too, especially with Olmos and Helfer). Well worth a watch/listen. The only thing is that they obviously talk about details that will happen laster in the series, so it's not something you should do until the very end.
From a different perspective, for S4E01 once you get to that one, there is a (very) old episode of the VFX Podcast (#54 – it can still be found on the net) that breaks down the opening of the season from a more technical standpoint. Another really interesting angle to take on a pivotal moment in the series.

I don't think they could have done it a different way and I don't think they were glorifying abuse; I think you might have been too angry to get the point. There's a funny and I think fairly well known story about when the rest of the cast found out they were "killing off" Starbuck - apparently they were _very_ angry about it and staged a bit of a nutty; ostensibly it was fairly aggressive.

Without being too spoilery:y, welcome to the scene that will define the entirety of season 4. Not the reveal — since that part has been signalled clearly enough — but rather the immediate aftermath that is the real focus of the moment. 😈

BTW, for the far future reference, after you're done with the series, here's another extra content to add to the pile to consider for yourselves or as a reaction. Katee Sackhoff does a bunch of interviews that are available on her YouTube channel. A week ago, she had Ron Moore on. They talk about BSG and STTNG among other things. He mentions "Lost in Space" as well. It's 1:21:32, and there are shorter bits on "The Sackhoff Show Clips" channel.
If you haven't already, you may also want to add the 1956 movie "Forbidden Planet" to the list, as it was influential but also so incredibly of its time.
