Pride and Prejudice | Episode 6 | Get Austen-tatious!

Comments

Rumour and gossip, most likely started by Mr Collins. It's not as if Darcy made any secret of his affections for Lizzie.

Vernon Harbin

I REALLY want to know where Lady Katherine heard about Elizabeth and Darcy. Because she was CONVINCED. She barged into someone's home, yelled at Elizabeth until she finally told her they weren't engaged, and then STILL didn't believe her, because she started ranting about Lydia as a potential sister-in-law to Darcy and calling Pemberley polluted. WHYWOMANWHY??

Jennifer McIntyre

You mention a bollywood version of Jane Austen it's called "Bride and Prejudice" if you were curious.

Clarice Swingler

Her father is American author John Ehle and her mother is English actress Rosemary Harris. In "The Camomile Lawn" the two played the same character in differing time periods.

Loved your reaction to this series! <3 Cannot wait for more Austen!! Would love to see your reaction to Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant. Of course Pride and Prejudice 2005 version...aaaaand Persuasion 2007 version with Sally Hawkins <3 <3 They are all so lovely :)

Jess The Fox

I absolutely adored this. Completely out of my comfort zone, but it was wonderful. More Austen!

Chris Devlin

According to Wikipedia (so it must be true 🙂) her mum is English and her dad is American. But Google did list her as an American actress.

Wonderful as ever! Others might mention this too but, again, I’ll just recommend you check out Death Comes to Pemberley from 2013. Not specifically a Jane Austen original but a sequel to Pride & Prejudice from noted crime writer P.D. James. I believe she captures the spirit of Austen’s characters quite well, plus you’ll also know loads of people from this too. I DO However have a couple of making of/retrospectives of Pride & Prejudice you might be interested in… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cn9EThh1xQw&t=24s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iz7_Fc7h5LQ&t=4s The first one was made at the time so you get to watch them film some of the scenes and see some extra cool things on location you wouldn’t have noticed before, a bit about sourcing the locations, casting the actors etc etc. The second one might be even more fun though, as it was made 10+ years later, it’s just an hour of various actors and production staff talking about their memories of making this. Some of this even goes into some crazier behind the scenes stories you wouldn’t have got in the first one, plus they also get to reflect on the ultimate success of it and how it’s lasted so well, very fascinating. There are a couple of stories repeated, especially the origins of how the producer came to make this, but the second does definitely build off of the first, having watched them both back to back again last night when I had this idea. Thanks again for doing this!! Chris

I loved watching your reactions to this series! You should definitely do more period costume-drama series like this! Two in particular come to mind - one is actually a continuation of this story, from 2013 PBS Masterpiece Theater; it's called "Death Comes to Pemberly" -- it takes place a few years after the events of "Pride and Prejudice" and deals with many of the same characters. Although different actors play all the roles, of great interest is the fact that the role of Lydia is played (energetically) by actress Jenna Coleman, who was one of the Doctor Who companions! The story is engaging, the actors are all top-notch. Originally broadcast in 3 parts on BBC, the series can be found on "PBS Masterpiece" in 2 parts, or on Amazon Prime (both require a fee I believe). Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTekxyR_nN4 The other series that is quite good is 2004 "North and South" by author Elizabeth Gaskill (a friend of Charles Dickins) which is very Jane Austen-like and has a lot of parallels to Pride and Prejudice - and also has a top-rate cast of well-known British actors. (Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elHpMtcPoXM ) -- Two other series I highly recommend are the Toby Stephens/Ruth Wilson mini-series version of Bronte's "Jane Eyre" (beware, the Amazon version is far too short - many important scenes were cut, so the full DVD version is best -- trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV4qpvF-e80) and the 2008 Masterpiece miniseries of Sense and Sensibility which is excellent. (Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8r117P9CiI ) Whether you tackle any of these, thank you so much for your reaction to the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle "Pride and Prejudice!"

Technically, I think Jennifer Ehle is considered "American" because she was born in the US and her mother is American, but she spent most of her youth between the US and the UK and most of her career in the UK, if you listen to her talk in interviews you won't mistake her for an American. I don't know about her and Colin Firth ever dating, but I was utterly shocked the first time I saw her without the "Lizzie Wig" and learned that she is actually blonde! 🤣🤣

Ashtara Levin

This was so wonderful! I am so happy that this is the version you decided to start with, I myself am more of a "traditional" Austen fan, so the closer the adaptation is to the source material, the more I like it (Usually.. "Clueless" is an exception) and now that you have gone through what I precieve as "the ultimate" version, I can relax 😂😅 I grew up watching this on TV on the weekends (there was a public channel that would loop small mini-series during the weekends, and this was one of the shows they featured) so I know it well, yet it never ceases to entertain me 😊 I tried watching the movie version but it just felt like it was on fast-forward in comparison, and I never finished, but I would love to join the ride with you as you go through it, as this is truly one of my favorite pieces of entertainment.

Ashtara Levin

I would absolutely watch more Austen reactions. There are a lot of good adaptations. One very high on the list that's already been mentioned is Sense and Sensibility (1995).

LatePaul

This was wonderful, thank you for doing these reactions! I just wanted to add to your radar The Lizzie Bennet Diaries for a possible future reaction series or to watch in your own time if you like. I think it would give a different perspective on Lydia, and it's such a good "modern", for the time it was released, take on the story. Very excited to get more and more austen-tatious with the Pals!

Marissa Nielsen

Ladies, what an utter treat it has been to rewatch P&P with you both. When this first landed in the UK in 1995, I remember Jennifer Ehle was touring with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and was quite charmingly bewildered when the audience roared their approval at the curtain call. I hope you will find time to watch one of the "making of" behind the scenes productions? There are several, but this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iz7_Fc7h5LQ is an hour long and has interviews with Ben Whitrow (Mr Bennet), Alison Steadman (Mrs Bennet), Chrispin Bonham Carter (Mr Bingley), Adrian Lukis (Mr Wickham), Lucy Briers (Mary Bennet), and David Bamber (Mr Collins). Also Sue Birtwhistle, the producer and Carl Davis (composer).

Vernon Harbin

Ah Daylight Savings working in my favour for once. Early P&P!
