It's amazing how many of the major behind-the-scenes players actually came in during S3 Red Dwarf. I had forgotten that. I think some of the things you are looking for is talked about at the end of the S2 doc (re: why there was such a big change in tone between S2 and S3) and a little bit in the episode commentaries on the DVDs.

2025-03-08 03:03:56 +0000 UTCIn a previous documentary you watched Doug Naylor started writing a script where Lister has the twins but Rob Grant thought babies were boring and wasn't interested at the time. Doug was worried about the continuity (which sounds funny in hindsight) but Rob's attitude was "who cares". So they did the scroll as a compromise. Personally I wish they'd made the episode. How could it not be funny?

I think they put the Star Wars text in at the beginning cause they had so many changes they thought they could get away with explaining it in such a convoluted way but also get it over and done with really quick. As for Backwards being the opener I believe they thought it was very strong, comedy wise, and such a great technical achievement that it would set them apart from other BBC sitcoms. In fact the double whammy of this and Polymorph really made series 3 very popular and ensured series 4 and onwards. I think a re-watch of Backwards is very deserved. Another special feature on this DVD they did was Backwards – Forwards, where they show the episode…backwards. This shows you what all the backwards people were actually saying! Btw I don’t know where you got 2007 from, this documentary was made in 2003. Also they found the missing scene of Robert’s first day as Kryton! It was released on another special DVD set that was released in 2007. If you want I can try and rip the other deleted scene off the disc for you. I’ve also looked back down the timeline and I don’t you’ve reacted to the regular Deleted Scenes from Series 3…unless it’s disappeared somewhere, your reaction to The Last Day appears to have been mislaid too?? One final point, yes this is a pretty honest documentary about the difficulties of making this kind of show. I feel like they were making a lot of documentaries like this in the 2000’s, most of the Classic Dr Who documentaries were just as honest during this time. I’ve also got all the DVD’s of those if you want me to send you some of them too. Catch you later! Chris

2025-03-07 10:35:02 +0000 UTCThat was a fun watch. Didn't even feel like 1 hour 20 minutes. Also enjoyed the remastered TNG documentaries on the Blu-ray release. They were warts and all as well like these Red Dwarf ones. Like how Gates McFadden got fired ect.
