RED DWARF | Mechocracy | Series 12 Ep 4 | Get Dwarfed

Comments

Love seeing Talkie Toaster again. but he is criminally insane for demanding Lister eat that much bread every day.

Ashley

I liked Schitts Creek until it just felt like a show about a rich family stealing a small business from someone. Is that a wrong take on the show?

Ashley

I could do two pieces of toast a day, a croissant mid day, and a garlic twist or corn bread with dinner. That would be a deal

Robert Carson

Nice to see the love for Talkie - some of us cynical old timers cringed a bit at the fan service, so it's always enjoyable to see people get more pleasure out of it than I did! This and the following three episodes are the strongest the show has been since series 5 for me.

Absent With Concept

I think it's not so much that he's especially awful (I still think his most awful moment across the whole show is way back in 'Meltdown') and more that we don't really get much positive to balance the negative. Series X Rimmer could be an absolute dick (remember his need to rub in his 'success' to a dying Howard) but he could also be just a member of the crew (like his hilariously dorky dancing at the end of 'Father's and Suns') and he could even be actually likable and heroic like in 'The Beginning'. Series 11 & 12 seem to have pretty consistently in prat mode throughout.

Ross Nolan

They made him impatient for the sake of a conversation about patience. That's not Rimmer and Kryten having a conversation, that's just "impatient man is too impatient to talk about patience, how amusingly ironic"

TuneIntoSanityFM

I'm not sure I agree with that. He has some smeghead moments in Series 11 and 12, but honestly there only a couple of episodes where it's front and center. In Series 11, you can really only point to "Officer Rimmer" and part of "Krysis" where he's being obnoxious. In Series 12 "Timewave" (but that's really all four of them and not just Rimmer), "Mechocracy", and the final episode of Series 12 (name redacted for spoilers) where he's being obnoxious. The 2020 movie is an out-an-out redemption arc (I think we can thank Richard Naylor instead of Doug for that). I do agree that Rimmer is much more of a "team player" in Series X, though.

Lizbeth Marcs

Not sure if they were trying to wait on this episode either for "the holidays", having President Kryten be inducted in January, or they needed any excuse to delay finishing this show completely because they don't want it to end. PS: Kryten said that he was heading for a first which the equivalent to honor degrees in the States.

Sebastian Bodine

I liked this one but I think they leaned a little too far into the 'Rimmer is Smeghead and nothing more than a Smeghead' thing in Series 11 and 12. Yes he is and should be 90% a Smeghead but I do like the odd episode where he is more sympathetic or brave. I guess I'd have like another 'Marooned', 'Holoship' or 'The Beginning'.

Ross Nolan

The last three episodes of Series 12 are absolute classics (shame about Timewave). The writing in this one is solid, even if in true Red Dwarf style it's never, ever brought up again (even when it should be). The smear campaigns are also top-tier, and seeing both younger Kryten and Rimmer. The campaign ads also support the theory that the Hologram Rimmer we see is an amalgamation of OG Rimmer that left to become Ace (possibly from a back-up disc from pre-departure OG Rimmers opposed to the Rimmer who actually left) and Nano!Rimmer from Series 8. As for the wig, this was a case where Chris Barrie was fine with being on camera using his real balding head but was convinced by others that it was more in-character for Rimmer to have a faked full head of hair. So Paula's sudden realization made me feel better. I didn't realize it was a wig until I saw the behind-the-scenes doc for Series 11.

Lizbeth Marcs

Excellent! I could eat all the toast provided I had no other obligations. Three more great installments and that’s it bar the tonnage of extra stuff plus the novels

pbaker

I'm far too addicted to breaded products, worrying

Frank Murphy

Yes and he has noble moments as do we all, but mostly douchery served

Frank Murphy

that may be too powerful XD

GillyBean

Well he was kinda a nice guy in Holoship - he even made Paula cry about him!

Troy Convers

We now get the S12 low budget, no FX, set entirely on the ship episode - and it is an absolute fan smegging tactic classic! An episode that harks back to the S1/S2 days of the boys just interacting with each other in a 'Slice of life' Dwarfer topic that borders on the absolutely trivial, if seen by an outsider. And of course, completely prescient. And seeing that S12 is a series of fan service (some overdone, but whatever...) we get Talkie Toaster back from exile in the garbage hold. Man, those nanobots were thorough. And yes, he's voiced by David 'OG Kryten' Ross! HOWDY DOODLY-DO!

Troy Convers

Eye level grill, that's your answer. Four slices at once!

Troy Convers

i like toast... i can only do one slice. as soon as toast starts to cool down even a little, im out. make it 4 waffles and im in OR, make it french toast and gimme some maple syrup and we got a deal

GillyBean

We are thankfully safe at the moment!

Time Lord

Silly question, but are you Gals affected by the wildfires?

Troy Convers

A smoked kipper club sandwich would account for 3 slices... My local deli named that a Mr Fribble.

Mark Ten

Another Rimmer being a douche episode, though you could say that's all of em lol

Frank Murphy
