Choice is a running theme in this show. Who we choose to be. Kat had a shady past, but she chose to be Kat. It's the big difference between Athena and Boomer. Athena knew she was a Cylon, but she chose to side with the humans. Boomer was not given that choice and as a result, she's a little lost. I think that BSG consistently makes the argument that regardless of what came before, who you chose to be today is what matters. Also, I love Adama's line at the end when he tells Kat that she made her people feel safe enough to be brave. It says to me a lot about what bravery is and the leadership style that the two of them share. When people feel supported, safe and loved, they become more capable of doing the right thing. Of doing extraordinary things. And providing that environment is what you should strive for as a leader.

Thank you so much for the support and concern! We do have lovely people who help give us some small trigger warnings for episodes upcoming. I know for some it may seem like we can't handle watching this show sometimes, but we really can and really will be okay. If it was something that became too much, we would stop watching without hesitation. Doesn't matter about "money" or anything of the sort. Something I have always known about myself and overtime have cherished, is that I am a very emotionally vulnerable person who has been through a lot in life. But I've come to realize that one of the things I'm meant to do while I'm on this Earth is to be exactly that-- Emotionally vulnerable. If it can help others see that they're not alone and it's okay to talk about the difficult stuff, then I am doing exactly what I should be. This show brings up a lot of theses conversations that I feel are so important to talk about and I'm thankful to be in a position where I can share my voice and emotions with others. <3 Kat

I think watching something that produces an emotional response can be difficult for anyone. It’s possible to enjoy something and have it be draining. I’m sure we all had similar reactions to it during the first watch. I know I showed my wife select episodes as it aired and some I avoided showing her. If it was too much, they’d quit it.

Ryan Fisher

But they're basically doing it for money, which the more I think about it is *incredibly* fucked up. Like Jackass levels.

Troy Convers

They are surrounded by people that know them well, and give them a heads up on tough to watch stuff in advance. Keep in mind Kat has seen such shows as Game of Thrones. While they get hit hard in the moment, they are strong and bounce back again.

Malcolm Wolf

Oh I might need more coffee but I know of the moments for sure.

Ryan Fisher

There's the [REDACTED] episode coming up soon, and then there's the [REDACTED] of [REDACTED] is S4, and there's [REDACTED] that comes seemingly out of nowhere (although I sorta guessed it as it had been building for a while), that absolutely fucks a lot of people up. You know the moment I mean. That was for me probably the low point of the entire series.

Troy Convers

It’s a very human series with high points and low points and all in between. I just would hate for them to walk into a hard episode in a bad head space.

Ryan Fisher

Probably best they stop watching right now. There's a reason why I've only watched the series in full twice in 20 years, and one of those was the first run.

Kat was my favorite at that point so I was CRUSHED when this episode dropped. She had a tremendous character arc.

Michael Solko

I didn't like this episode when it first aired, but over the years it's grown to be one of my favourites - I could definitely live without Kat's "friend" but.. I think initially I took it as a filler maybe, but it's actually anything but. Bottle episode maybe, but not filler.

Martin Nicholls

So let's not think about why Starbuck has been keeping a massive, lethal stash of sleeping pills. The scenes with Starbuck and Adama at the end are great. Starbuck wants to help, but she's just nowhere near able to stay in the room. Adama is, and not only does he promote Kat but he gives her something nobody under his command gets - he talks about his personal life. Also got to mention the make-up and special effects in this episode. The blackened paint peeling off the ships, the force of the storm etching the windows, the gaunt looks of the pilots... you really FEEL how bad it is.

Jonathan

Can we help you all as the series progresses? There are some wonderful episodes and some very difficult episodes before the show ends and your mental health comes first.

Ryan Fisher

Kara put Kat's picture right where Kat told her to put it back in the episode "Scar" - Near the picture of Riley's girlfriend. A year and horrific torture later and she still remembered. So, the logistics, the other civie ships only had skeleton, bare essential crews the rest were on Galactica, so I don't think we lost thousands this ep. So Galactica loads up on civilians from a group of ships, because it's more protected, jumps with those ships into the middle of the cluster, the Raptors who have more shielded navigation relays jump coordinates to their assigned ships, which means they have to be in close proximity because jumping requires knowing not just where you're going, but where you are jumoing FROM, and then they all jump to the planet on the other side which has algea they can eat, and Galactica jumps back to pick up more ships/civilians to do it again. Also, since I know you've watched the next episode already per a mention in your DW reaction, The Cylon hybrid's prophecy was not about Earth, but about the secret of the Five being on a planet in the shadow of a Star Cluster. Which the Colonial Fleet is currently jumping through over and over to get to the planet on the other side. Unfortunately, the episode is a bit of a muddle, so that fact gets lost, as does the logistics of all the jumps. According to the Podcast commentary, they had to try and save this episode in the edit. This is one of Jane Espenson's first episode's on the series, and unfortunately I think she probably the weakest writer on the show. I just don't think she was a good fit for this series' tone and writing style. She did well on Whedon shows, but this isn't those. She's also been quoted as saying she writes Scene to scene, so I think that explains a lack of narrative cohesion - a growing problem among modern entertainment if I'm honest. Funnily enough, I was watching this one with a friend once and he was overly distracted enough to the point he didn't realize poor Kat was dying, and was bewildred when I explained it to him.

Nolan

After this episode, I'd say that if you haven't watched the show The Good Place, it should be at the top of the list! I would also suggest going in as blind as possible! It's a comedy show, but I think there's a strong thematic link between the show and this episode. It also happens to be an amazing show!

Tim C

FYI, the name Sasha is a gender-neutral name of Slavic, Russian, and Ukranian origin, meaning “defender” and “helper of mankind”. Just putting it out there...👀

Troy Convers

This episode really pisses me off, but not for the reasons you might think. Kat started out as a Starbuck clone; gifted pilot, outspoken personality and substance abuse issues, but as time went on the character is fleshed out into a more rounded, less selfish version of Kara. Her death is a classic noble sacrifice and a moving one; the scene with her and Adama on her deathbed is exactly what you'd want from that kind of scene, and those particular people. No, what pisses me off is that Moore gives her a compelling piece of her backstory that completes the picture right at the death, pun intended, and there's no time to explore it. Star Trek Discovery did this with one of it's characters who, in fairness, wasn't as well thought out, but it adds to the narrative that Kat was just created as Kara's sixth toe, and she certainly is not that. And once again, Kara gets handed her emotional arse after feeling smug about finding out a contemporary's shortcomings, only to find that person has more courage than she. It's Kendra Shaw all over again. Godspeed, Louanne Katraine, aka Sasha. But hey, she may be back. And she won't be the last one to be added to the body count, either...

Troy Convers

X-Files cup! 👍🏻👽

Troy Convers

This is great cause I really wanted to cry during my work lunch today. I do wish the had spent more time developing her character over the seasons but they could have spent a whole extra season doing just that for the characters we wish we knew more about.
