BATTLESTAR GALACTICA | Unfinished Business | Season 3 Ep 9 | Get Frakked

Comments

Oh okay, I didn't realize it was just those episodes. Cool. I'll have to check them out some time.

Ricky

I think all. But there's only a handful of extended episodes. The remaining are in S4 (Razor movie, ep2, ep18 and the finale)

AgentFalcon

Are they only watching extended cuts from here on out or just this episdoe?

Ricky

The extended version uses full pieces of music to support the scenes; the cut version truncates or eliminates a lot of the music, making it less effective overall. In addition, there is more complete information about Dee and her feelings.

David T

Her performance is even better when you consider how much of a sweetheart she is IRL; her podcast is fantastic! ❤️

Troy Convers

Whenever I think I've got a handle on how toxic Starbuck is, she goes for another swim in nuclear waste. Big ups to Katee Sackhoff for her performance in this one. So what if this was a character episode? It's still one of the best in my book.

David Blau

Lee finding out about Kara is such a gut-punch, and Jamie Bamber sells it so well. Michael Hogan too, I'm always blown away when we see how different 'pre-torture Tigh' looks and feels as a character. This is also the first time we see New Caprica in the early days, full of hope and optimism. But the killer realisation is it was all hollow. It wasn't just the Cylons showing up that ruined everything, the planet was just not habitable enough. Remember when we cut forwards originally? Food shortages, outbreaks of sickness, unreliable power. The president doesn't have a cabin, Starbuck doesn't have a house. Even without the Cylons they'd have all been dead within a few generations. That's the real tragedy of this episode, they were all fooling themselves.

Jonathan

They shot all the flashbacks at the same time as the opening episodes, intending to use them throughout the season. But then they consolidated them into one episode, and the further just focused on the Kara/Lee moments. Ron Moore then told the editor to work out a version making use of all the shot material, hence the moments of non-linearity and flow duing the cuts. And some minor shot continuity flubs. It mostly works. And if BSG is really about the characters over the plot for the viewer, they'll probably enjoy this cut more, than those who are here for plot I think.

Nolan

Plus, this cut makes it clearer that there's been a lot of slacking on board ship, and Tyrol's cavallier attitude and "we'll get to it tomorrow, give the crew some R&R" reasoning is embelmatic of that attitude. Adama wants to put a stop to that. So he takes his licks, feeling he partially deserves it, but also because he's making a statement that it'll be the last time he'll put himself on equal ground with his crew.

Nolan

I dunno, boxing IS a part of military culture right now despite all the stuff you say, so I don't think it's particularly unbelievable. Nobody's likely to get incapacitated (as in unable to do their job) from a few rounds, and I think in-universe it's acknowledged that the Chief/Adama and Starbuck/Apollo fights are unexpectedly brutal. With Chief/Adama, I think Adama is beating HIMSELF up through the medium of Chief. He's angry at himself for allowing people to go down to New Caprica. He's probably angry at himself for allowing the settlement of New Caprica at all. And he definitely blames himself for all the torture people went through down there. Remember he actively ENCOURAGED Tigh to move there. He's verbally attacking Chief because he wants to get beaten up (a trait that you'll see more than once from Adama) and because he wants to redraw that line of 'we are NOT friends'. And in his mind at least, watching him get pummelled will hopefully help all the people who still think he let them down by leaving them down there. Also important to remember that Adama is a good boxer. He's shown he regularly beats Lee in sparring matches. If he's losing to Chief it's because he's not trying to win.

Jonathan

I like the extended cut for the extra scenes of Adama and Roslin, and Kara talking to Tigh about her problems, sparking their new-found friendship. I LOVE it for putting the scene of Dee showing her agency back in.

Nolan

An episode that almost made me stop watching on the original run. A good script in isolation and well, it's an acting masterclass. But it really starts to make certain characters thoroughly unlikeable. The idea of having a boxing tournament as a way of letting off steam is such a dumb, dumb idea, both in-universe and out. Sure, let's have our best pilots and command staff injured and incapacitated for when the Cylons rock up. I mean, who's on the bridge anyway?!? Or worse still, they get CTE, a known condition IRL at this point, and make erratic decisions in the future? Plot stupidity at its finest, with added bonus of the casual barbarism making you wonder again if humanity is good enough to survive. I didn't get the plotline between Tyrol and Adama: is Chief blaming him for being allowed to settle on New Caprica? And why was Adama verbally beating up on him? Deeper seated problems? And what would the ramifications have been if Tyrol had killed Adama? Again, just dumb, in-universe and out. And as for the two toxic waste dumps known as Lee and Kara, the Ross and Rachael of Sci-fi? Oy. No-one should be 'shipping' them; in a normal circumstance these two should be as far away from each other as possible. They hurt people, they hurt themselves. Poor Dee and Anders, two people that have acted like lightning rods for their respective partners, have to watch the inevitable car crash as passengers and hope they themselves can walk away with as little injury as possible. Toxic personalities like that suck the energy from a room and the risk the writers run here is making them so inherently unlikeable, you stop caring whether they succeed or not. Kara really is a cancer and Lee is just one of her enablers. But, For what I think of the characters, Sackhoff and Bamber knock it out of the park; they had to be mentally draining scenes to film. The main plots overshadowed some quite profound exchanges between characters Adama and Roslyn are on the bubble (and the local gear too 😅) and there's even some foreshadowing of, well... And Kara & Saul getting along? Aw, game knows game. And Colonial culture seems very Earth colonial, doesn't it? Very early America, faults and all.

Troy Convers

Unfinished business, indeed...!

As a reminder, this is the Extended version.
