 BATTLESTAR GALACTICA | Collaborators | Season 3 Ep 5 | Get Frakked

Comments

My hubby (Eric) recalled a part of Adama's speech in the miniseries: "Why are we as a people worth saving?" It's a theme that resonates throughout the series, and not always with a clear answer. Humanity is messy, and BSG never shies away from that fact. Side note: If you find yourself missing Jammer, Dominic Zamprogna (the actor who played him) has been a regular cast member on General Hospital since 2009 and as of this comment, according to IMDB, has been in 1511 episodes! He is a fantastic actor and does a great job in that role as well.

Was thinking about this ep again, and wondered if there would be any change to the perceptions of the episode and the characters actions if "cylon" were replaced with "nazi." I do believe the initial shots of the Cylon occupation at the end of last season were based on either historical records or a film about the Nazi occupation of Paris. And the Cylons DID attempt and mostly succeed in a genocide. I have no doubt the consequences for Collaborators back in the 1940s were just as harsh as what we see here, and those enacting those punishments felt just as justified. That Roslin and Adama thought the response was heinous was startingly clear-headed for what no doubt is a turbulent, post occupation emotional time.

Nolan

Also how many people have been convicted wrongly due to faulty evidence and released years later. If they're put to death, what use is a posthumous pardon? The reason we all have reactions to this show is that it strikes a chord with all of us, it's so well written.

Karl Ward

I bet if Ellen had been launched, then we would have seen Paula popping the champagne. 😂

Troy Convers

The Dying Leader.

Have to say I really like this episode. Stellar acting performances all around, even from relatively minor characters like Connor. Starbuck being ruthlessly honest that she just wants to see someone bleed, and she doesn't care who. The sheer hypocrisy of the 'circle' picking out people they know will dole out guilty verdicts. And can we take a moment to appreciate the sets? One of the reasons they 'sploded the Pegasus was so they could create the new Basestar set, and I think they killed it. One thing the show-runners were big on was showing the damage Galactica takes accumulates over time, and here is where you really start to notice the CGI model looking very different from how it used to. It really took a lot of damage in the battle over New Caprica and a lot of it ain't getting fixed.

Jonathan

Honestly the worst part about Zarek is how much sense he makes. As a character who debuted TRYING to become a martyr, he knows very well to deny that opportunity to anyone else. And he's absolutely right that Roslin spending the first year of her presidency doling out death sentences would have destroyed the fleet. But he's not immune from his own biases, and while Roslin spent the majority of the occupation teaching... he spent it being tortured in detention.

Jonathan

Paula's just jealous because they enjoyed killing Jammer and she didn't get to enjoy Ellen's death.

John

Welcome to another episode of ST. That's Star Trauma. Remember, the characters won't change if you treat them like they won't. If you turn off the show because of how angry you are, the characters won't have a chance to change. (This is 8/10ths a joke, more seriously, if you need a break and to step away, take time to take care of yourself) Remember when BSG won the poll and a good chunk of us were like: "Are you SURE?!?" We knew what we were all in for. 😅🤣 I found with BSG, that besides the space setting being a good seperator from the show feelung too real, I also found watching and viewing the characters through the lens of their performances, their acting choices and reaction to also be a good distraction, and part of that is because everyone in this show gives such banger performances every week that stand up to that kinda scrutiny. Micheal Hogan is acting up a storm as a man on the warpath because all he has left is the Fight, so he's fighting everyone, but he's so deep in denial. As are the others in differing ways. Tyrol and Anders, they were probably at that point when Zarek drafted them, but they had enough distance personally to not get lost in irrationality, and were likely trying to bring some level-headedness to the Circle before both having the realization that it WASN'T reasonable at different points. Anders' "There's too much talk." That's not because he wants to just execute people, it's him angry and guilty because the talking is what is making him realize how fraked up the Circle is. Galen, has his realization of that perfectly portrayed by Aaron Douglas with that agape, hands over mouth horror. But their scars from New Caprica are not as deep as others in that room. BSG really is about trauma, showcasing its various permutations and the different ways people cope with it. And it is ugly. All wrapped up next to that question: "Are we worthy of Survival?" As of this episode Paula, if she were watching on her own would say, "nope" and turn off the TV. 🙃

Nolan

It's a great episode, of a great show, but it's a tough watch. Always one I slightly dread watching as so much of the stuff that happens is really ugly. Roslin and the "pardon" at the end is the only ray of sunshine and hope in an otherwise awful situation. But that's what this show does so well. It presents that ugly side of us so well that it's genuinely uncomfortable.

Chris Devlin

Eh, maybe Helo.

Troy Convers

You two seem like you need a hug! I love guys! (not in a creepy way!)

Brina Blue

Paula summed up the key to what makes BSG so interesting: no one is innocent. There's no easy path, and it's all messy.

Tim C

One of the episodes that gets even better the more times I watch it. One of my favorite speeches from Zarek. And nearly perfect writing, score and acting in every scene.

You'd think that after the scorching start of S3 that maybe, just maybe, we'd get a respite and a nice, laid back, character episode where we can gather our thoughts and the survivors of New Caprica could reclaim just a little bit of their humanity. Some shore leave, a little friendly Pyramid tournament, maybe. Well frak that, it ain't happening. Oh, we'll see a character episode, just one that shines a light on their darker sides; their paranoia, their rage, their need for retribution. Or is it justice? 'Collaborators' is a pretty brutal episode, which is saying something for BSG, as the morality play is all too familiar for us Earthlets. It's still a fine episode though (with an unintended irony that will become clear later on in the series); it's like 'The Drumhead' with full afterburners on and uncomfortable in that we see the more brutal side of some of the people who took a mental beating after the occupation. Gaeta almost became an example of the 'no good deed goes unpunished' maxim because of those broken people. The ship took a beating too; 'The Manoeuvre' took it's toll and just like with his people Adama has to balance the healing with the need for the operation to function. There are some *small* moments of levity though; Gaius' daydream and the Incredible Hulk homage, Adama's quip to Lee about skipping rope. And did you notice that Roslin is back in power again via non-election. That's twice now, and Zarek knows it. And as for the Dark Passenger inside Kara .. And the episode's placement just after the occupation arc highlights how much Ron Moore wanted to almost punish the viewer for their loyalty; I hate to say this Gals and I say this with a straight face: the remainder of this series contains things that make Pegasus look like the norm, not the exception. Might want to get some trigger warning advice. The run-in to S4 (yes, I'm saying that with just 5 episodes of S3 gone) is unrelenting, and this is where the cracks start to show with the writing, in my opinion. I honestly think that this episode would have been served better as an ongoing secondary plot angle; one and done makes it too neatly tied up At this point, even I hanker for a good ol' Trek style low-stakes 'slice of life' episode every now and then as a palate cleanser.

Troy Convers

I don't know how Rimmer is going to get out of this one.

Mike Connaghan

Gals: "We're not afraid of BSG" BSG fans: "You will be. You. Will be."

Troy Convers

we did warn you that this show would be tough to watch.

Me, about to watch your reaction to this episode: 🫣
