Red Dwarf | Officer Rimmer | Season 11 Ep 4 | Get Dwarfed

Comments

I think the most noticeable failing of the DAVE era of Red Dwarf is the fact that too many episodes needed 40 more seconds, but that could be time for one more commercial. Otherwise, I feel like this series gets better and better. I think you two will love the next couple of episodes!

I just realized why the Rimmer amalgam at the end was disturbingly familiar to me. It made me think of that dang Absorbaloff. At least no one ended up as a paving slab oral sex toy... though that wouldn't be terribly off-brand for Red Dwarf.

Here’s the Officer Rimmer one from 2015. https://www.ganymede.tv/2015/12/red-dwarf-xi-episode-4-set-report/

My friend saw this episode recorded and I asked him to spill all the beans! There are spoiler free set reports on Ganymede and Titan which are fun to read.

Yeah, the abrupt ending threw me the first time as well. It still does, but it used to as well. That's really my only complaint about the episode. Everything else was pretty top-notch. Great jokes, great concept in the bioprinter and "owning" your DNA (timely given that 23-and-Me is about to go belly-up, which means all that DNA information on file could be bought at fire sale prices). One thing did impress me this time around that I completely missed on my previous two viewings: Chris Barrie managed to make each of the Rimmer clones pretty distinct from one another through facial expression, movement, or even posture. I mean, the "officer's club" scene was only a minute or so, but I think part of the reason why the blue screen effect worked as well as did is because he put in the effort to make each Rimmer clone seem different.

I haven't watched these since the original airing but damn, this season is pretty good.

The abruptness of the ending was definitely something that I noticed at the time. It felt like the editing was ever so slightly off in a couple of episodes. But other than that this series has been great. Only my second time through it and it's definitely fantastic. I remember very little of it as well. Gonna be weird when we get to Series 12 onwards which I haven't seen.

Like some other comments I don't think I really ever saw these later seasons & loving it. Also let's keep the Halloween vibes going! Red Dwarf was my intro to Gallifrey Pals & wowzers it's been over a year now! :D

Haha, was waiting for your comments about the ending. When it first went out that was pretty much all anyone talked about. It's like there's a few seconds missing. Otherwise, the bit where Rimmer gets let into the grunts corridor and then they just stand around calmly with the door open as if the monster's not around is my only other complaint here, it's such a great episode, brilliantly executed.

Absent With Concept

On paper, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Dave era Red Dwarf was just treading water. Another mystery ship with a backstory, another excuse to see Rimmer drunk on a drop of power, another excuse to have several Rimmers flitting around up to no good. But in practice, Red Dwarf is a well oiled machine that can keep mining (arf) the same general ideas and strike gold. It feels like the SFX have finally caught up to Naylor's lunacy; the bioprint crew is a fantastic concept that deserves a revisit on a larger platform, especially with the ethics of races of disposable people (thanks Guinan), Captain Herring's jammed head is uncanny valley brilliant and the Rimmer monster the stuff of smegging nightmares. And the dialogue, once again, is on point. The 'final button' could have been where the Rimmer Monster is disturbed by the boys whilst assimilating Prime Rimmer, who is reducing in size; they then destroy the monster and the final scene is a pint sized Rimmer with a squeaky voice running round on a hamster wheel as punishment for his behaviour. And as an aside, wouldn't it have been funny if the call centre operative Lister was stuck on the phone with in 'Trojan' had been a bio print of himself?
