When you guys announced BSG several patrons warned this was a show that might be too much for your sensibilities. I remember not watching the series for a while during this period. I can't promise sunshine in the future, but there is some lightness to come as well. That said, did you note Sharon's name is now Sharon Agathon. She and Helo got married at some point.

Mark Chrisco

Totally feel you on wanting to stop watching because of the bleakness. Never happened to me with Galactica, but with other shows. As always the death knell of any show is "I don't care what happens to these people". If you think they're all irredeemably screwed, that's what you get. Having said that, at the time this was a very necessary show. There were TONS of people who felt the occupation of Iraq was a great thing, and we were bringing democracy, and genuinely couldn't understand why civilians were blowing themselves up or resisting at all. This shone a huge spotlight on that.

Jonathan

Nah, while equality of minorities and people's sexual rights has progressed, you still have a hardcore movement that would like to roll civilisation back to the dark ages.

Troy Convers

For a few things, maybe. The state of political discourse in the US? Agreed. The state of the Middle East? Sure, agreed. But overall, things continue to get better for most people year after year. If you had said 5 years, I might agree with you, because a lot of things where I live have still not recovered from the pandemic. But 20? No, we've made a lot of progress in 20 years.

R. Chang

Hard disagree. Today is worse than 20 years ago.

Troy Convers

A note on the value of making art like this - while I know that the two of you have no trouble empathizing with the plight of an occupied population, that is not true of everybody. A piece of art like this is capable of creating that empathy in a person who previously did not have it. As an adult, I realized that much of my "progressive" attitude towards homosexuality (as a Gen Xer) was because of the media I consumed as a teen. The TNG episode Outcast was a part of that, as were Mercedes Lackey's The Last Herald Mage trilogy. Consuming that media shaped me in ways that I'm thankful for. BSG and this arc could do that (on other topics) for someone else. When i see right-wingers banning books and "objectional material" while it's horrible, I have to acknowledge that they are correct to fear these things. Art is very effective at creating empathy. And if empathy is something you want to destroy, burning books is a good way to do it.

As others have already said, the show was a reflection of its time. And an accurate one, as difficult as that may be to comprehend today, removed as we are by the passage of time. I distinctly recall particular episodes that struck me as too on-the-nose, portraying as they did events that were unfolding in the real world with only the thinnest veneer of fictional gloss (in much the same way that Star Trek has done over the years). The real world was a careening, paranoid tragedy, scripted all too predictably by insane demagogues. For its part, BSG seemed relatively safe, presenting the hope of eventual rescue from a years-long existential struggle. Returning to the real world after watching for 44 minutes was not comforting, but felt to me instead more like the resignation of taking up again the heavy burden of unavoidable despair. In that specific sense, the show was "entertaining". If you take anything away from watching this show, please let it be an appreciation of how lucky we are to live today instead of 20 years ago. The world could be, and has been, much darker than it is now.

It's truly disturbing that this show is still so topical 20 years after it aired. And I get how much of a bummer it is. That said, without any spoilers, BSG is a show that takes you to some low lows so that it can reward you with some well-earned highs. But it never lets you get stay at either extreme for too long before it turns back for the other. That's just the kind of show it is. You've already experienced that cycle for yourselves. It's the same with the characters. You'll sometimes hate the characters that you usually love and sometimes you'll love the characters you usually hate. I know you guys aren't looking for a new show right now, but if you want something a little more spirit restoring, I recommend The Good Place.

R. Chang

This is tough, I feel for you both and I totally get it. As you know this was made post 911 and it was a kind of catharsis and escapism from that reality but it's a lot easier to watch something like this when the world is all rainbows and unicorns. Unfortunately as has been said, the world seems to be living under a pall of uncertainty just now and even though I'm writing this on an island in the middle of the North Sea I'm genuinely concerned for you and the USA. Your reactions make me laugh and cry and think and really brighten my day, never underestimate the positive force you are in the world. You did make me laugh at the end though, I watched this when it came out and again with funnylilgal although I wasn't a subscriber at that time! Now I have memberships with you all!! Here's a link to something so silly it will hopefully cheer you both up!! https://youtu.be/DsAVx0u9Cw4?si=U2W_vRu85zfyGaha (Dr Who 1980s tribute!)

You’re watching a really bleak period in the show at an unfortunate time. I, personally, find the bleakness rough. It’s not my go-to. I’m always going to default to Ted Lasso. The only thing I can say is good storytelling overall is about events that change you. Other shows, DS9 for example, come in after events like this. BSG makes you watch, and that’s really hard. Take care of your mental health. I love this show. I hope you will love this show. If you can’t watch, don’t watch.

Ryan Fisher

The good ol' days of Cain shooting her XO! Salad days indeed! 😁

Troy Convers

" I regret that we meet in this way. You and I are of a kind. In a different reality, I could have called you friend."

Troy Convers

I could wax lyrical about where this story has gone and it's resolution (and a moment that is etched into Sci-fi culture), but I will say only this: the timing of you guys watching this is just oh so unfortunate, given how America is hanging on a precipice right now. It's fine when it's fictional (Apocalypse War, No Mans Land, Rock of Ages, Mirror Mirror, Age of Apocalypse come to mind) but when Real Life (TM) is mirroring (oh boy, the phrasing) this situation, then I fear this might become all to true, if saner heads don't prevail. Don't let The Experiment fail.

Troy Convers

I loved your shout out to Angela aka Funnylilgalreacts ! I was there for all of her Firefly and BSG reactions and she was the one who pointed me in your direction when your BSG reactions stared up! I love her and I will probably resubscribe in November to put myself though Chernobyl again. I can only afford so many subscriptions at a time, so I'll have to drop someone else next month. These episodes are hard to watch. I can only imagine they are more difficult in this day and age. Sending you both love and hugs! Exodus is coming.

Brina Blue

Lots of shows I watch are typically just for entertainment. I want to pass the time and be transported somewhere else for a short while. However, I've always thought of this version of BSG as art. It's challenging, not always easy to watch, yet I think it has significant value. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." BSG reminds us of what has happened before via the medium of storytelling. Hopefully one day, events like this will only ever take place in story form.

Tim C

I always love the sly little Seinfeld reference in this episode!

Tim C

Back in S1, as Leoben was tortured by Starbuck, he quoted the in universe scripture "All this has happened before, and will happen again." He goes on to say something like: "The roles may change, but the players remain the same, this time your the interrogator and I'm the victim." And I think episodes like this are to foster understanding (though not emdoresment). The Middle East is half a world away, out of sight and out of mind for most in the West. Acts like Tigh are making are often seen as inherently evil, with no purpose or thought. BSG is showing a potential mindset for WHY people commit such acts. Not because it condones them, but because without understanding, there can be no peace. If you can't at least understand where a person is coming from and what experiences inform them, they will remain an othered boogeyman to be feared and ostrasized. By making the "good guys" do these things, it's reaching across a branch of understanding. At the start of the show the Cylons bombed human civilians and Cylons were hated and executed. Now the humans are bombing civilians and cylons, are hated and executed but a Cylon has also been trusted enough to be freed from prison and given a uniform. The lines have blurred, but only because understanding is happening.

Nolan

It's always darkest just before it continues to get darker. And then you can think back on the good ol' days!

Mike Connaghan

This show is really a reflection of the time. The War on Terror, 9/11, suicide bombers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Colonel Tigh is representing the perspective of the Iraqis and Afghanis carrying out attacks on U.S. military and allies. We (the U.S.) were out in Afghanistan trying to win the hearts and minds of the Afghanis and that's what the Cylons are trying to do. The purpose I see to everything being depicted in this part of the show is we are meant to identify and root for the humans. However, they are now put into the position of acting like the people we were fighting in the real world of the time. It is meant to have us better understand and identify with the "enemy". In the HBO mini series 'Band of Brothers' there's something one of the actual veterans said during one of the interviews: "I've thought about this often. That man (German soldier) and I might’ve been good friends, we might’ve had a lot in common. He might’ve liked to fish, he might’ve liked to hunt. You never know, you know. Of course, they were doing what they were supposed to do and I was trying to do what I was supposed to do. But, under different circumstances, we might’ve been good friends." I think that quote is what you just watched is all about.

Ricky

Your reaction, and the name Precipice, just makes me think of that 70s poster with the line "Hang in there, baby!" (*meaning there will be wins, not that the trauma will stop, sorry LOL)
