Gallifrey Pals - Movie Time! Monty Python: Life of Brian | With Kat and Parker!

Comments

Given that Kat is such a fan of physical comedy, they should check out another British comedy show called The Goodies. They were contemporaries, and friends with, the Monty Python crew. Their show was a little more family oriented, but made use of a lot of physical comedy, and stunts and effects from the early days of moving pictures.

Paul Flux

Yes and they did many takes with different words , only using biggus dickus near the end, so it was a suprise to them all

Frank Murphy

Forgot to put that on my funeral play list lol Great film, as is the holy grail n the meaning of life is ok

Frank Murphy

If Kat is interested in seeing more Monty Python sketches, you could just react to the whole show...

tal goren

It was filmed in Monastir, Tunisia, which allowed the production to reuse sets from Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth. Just remember that if you watch that film, as some shots look identical!

The only other thing I will say is that you're tapping into a vein of British post-war comedy that - in the nicest way - is FUCKING UNHINGED and can be traced right back to the Goon Show and Spike Milligan, who the Pythons cite both as a direct influence on their brand of humour and who also influenced Peter Cook & Dudley Moore. And of course Monty Python has inspired so many British comedies since, such as The Young Ones, Blackadder - and Red Dwarf. And while we're on the subject of quirky British sci-fi, you absolutely HAVE to watch The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I could spout on about LOB for hours, but I'll just give you a Fun Fact about who put the money up to make the film after the backers (Lew Grade and Lord Delfont, who were TV & film moguls) dropped out with days left before production started after actually reading the script and being scared off because of the subject matter.... "Python fan and former Beatle George Harrison set up HandMade Films along with Denis O'Brien to help fund the film at a cost of £3 million. Harrison put up the money for it as he "wanted to see the movie"—later described by Terry Jones as the "world's most expensive cinema ticket". As a reward for his help, Harrison appears in a cameo appearance as Mr. Papadopoulos, "owner of the Mount", who briefly shakes hands with Brian in a crowd scene (at 1:08:50 in the film). His one word of dialogue (a cheery but out of place Scouse "'ullo") had to be dubbed in later by Michael Palin." - Wikipedia

Another great physical comedy Python sketch thats well worth watching is the Fish Slapping Dance!

Mordredd

You may want to now watch "Graham Chapman's Memorial Service (Longer version)" [4:50 length] on YouTube [unless others suggest another version]. Optional viewing beforehand is the "Dead Parrot" sketch from Monty Python's Flying Circus to get a reference, as well as for its own sake [you might end up watching it bleed into other sketches, as they tend to do].

Mike Connaghan

The general consensus is that Holy Grail is the favorite in America, while Life of Brian is the favourite in the U.K. Parker is right. The Ministry of Silly Walks is my favorite Monty Python bit. It isn't addressed in dialogue, but Judith is meant to be Judas' sister.

David Brown

Let the record show that this is a sci-fi space movie.

Mike Connaghan

This was maybe my my fourth time watching this movie and I always forget there's aliens. :D

Makhiel

I would argue that Life of Brian is a much smarter satire with a more cohesive plot. These are smart, dumb jokes. The origins of religions, cults, mass think. And they were really taking a risk in that era, while this kind of criticism wouldn't be made into a film today. Say what you want about Deadpool & Wolverine, but it definitely doesnt have a stance on society. Its nostalgia and reference comedy... This is a challenging film! P.S You guys focus on the fake statue, literally every thing else is on location... this film looks incredible for 1979

George Baxter

Haven't seen this movie in a while. It was fun watching with you both. BTW Graham Chapman was one of the first British celebrities to come out publicly as gay. He was also a qualified doctor and provided medical support to cast and crew during the filming of Life of Brian on location in Tunisia.

The Untempered Cynic

This is the first time I have watched something with Parker and when he nearly called himself Paula I knew I would love him. Graham Chapman the one who played Brian, was one of the first celebrities to come out as homosexual he did it on air in 1972. Just thought you would enjoy that knowledge.

Jack Rogers

So apparently, and I am not exactly sure how true this is, but the actors in the Biggus Dickus scene where told that they should not laugh and they would not get paid if they laughed, so they where really trying not to laugh.

gobmob2000

Lets go! I'm so excited for this! It started as a make good for a scheduling conflict but to me this is a special event and I am pumped for it!
