I don't know if this has been addressed but I was wondering when were getting more Lower Decks reactions.

Just curious, in case I missed an announcement: are you planning on returning to Lower Decks? I really enjoyed these reactions! :D

One thing I really liked about this season finale was that it wasn't just another space battle. Those are great, but they aren't every episode of TNG/DS9, and they shouldn't be here, either. Instead, we got a space anomoly puzzle episode and the Cerritos doing what it's designed to do: provide support for other ships and use its oversized engines to tractor a larger ship to safety.

Very good episode. Seeing Sonya Gomez again was quite a treat. They juggled all the storylines in this episode very deftly. After Lower Decks if you Gals aren't Star Trekked out you can maybe do Prodigy or Strange New Worlds. I'm probably the millionth person to recommend them. Lol.

I keep thinking she's in the original "Lower Decks" episode too. Lol

Sonya Gomez is *one of* the "Ensign(s) who's in engineering for, like, two episodes on TNG, and then never shows up again." The other is Ensign Robin Lefler, played by Ashley Judd, in "Darmok" and "The Game."

Rick Sternbach painted a dolphin in a space suit back in the 70s.

And Jennifer is played by Lauren Lapkus who is close friends with Paul F Tompkins who is close friends with Tawny.
I want more Tawny x PFT content. they are soo good on the Star Trek Podcast but they don't do many episodes because its an official podcast and they only really make eps to promote paramount ST projects.

Fun fact about Jennifer, she got her name from Tawny ad-libbing in season one, in the love virus episode, "out of my way, JENNIFER!" and she pushes that character out of the way. She said if she had known it was an Andorian, she would have picked a different name but the creators loved it enough to make it canon.

This is where animation steps up. TNG, or even any modern Trek show, would have a tough time with all these affects, changing the ship model for just one episode, etc. And for a mostly-comedy, they really do some great Star Trek style finales.

Correct, I think they were included by Mike Okuda and Rich Sternbach when they did the technical manual and blueprints for the Enterprise D; the idea was that cetaceans, being familiar with a 3-D environment, would be better navigators. It also was a bit of an homage to Star Trek IV "The Journey Home," which if I recall correctly was the first Star Trek production Okuda worked on. Showing it on TNG was discussed but would have been prohibitively expensive to make it look good with late 80s TV tech, so it was just something of an insiders' secret until Mike McMahan insisted on putting it in the animated show. It's been name-checked at least once before on Lower Decks, but this is the first time it appears.

Great reaction, really glad they are giving lesser known TNG characters more chances to shine, it really helps make the universe feel more real.

It's a sci-fi trope I've seen a few times. The idea being that dolphins are more suited to thinking about moving in 3 dimensions and that makes them better space pilots than humans, who tend not to think about up and down as much.

Cetacean Ops has been mentioned in TNG but never seen before.
However -- and much more fun -- the Rubber Ducky Room is from TNG too! The big ship schematic they have in the background of Engineering included lots of little random things to fill space. One of them is a room just containing a shuttle-sized rubber ducky. No one was ever meant to be able to see it in detail but HD remastering and behind-the-scenes photos changed that.

There are finales that make you happy and ones that make you concerned for what's next, this episode gave us both. Seeing the Jennifer/Mariner relationship, Rutherford learning something about his past, and Tendi moving to the Science division. I promise Season 3 will deliver. Especially when the crew go to a place that Paula has seen before 😏😉

The Rubber Ducky Room is also an Enterprise tech spec Easter egg, I think?

I love this finale because it isn't a big battle. It's a big engineering challenge. In that it really highlights what Lower Decks is all about.

There was a whole series of novels called “Starfleet Corps of Engineers” which had Sonya Gomez as a prominent character in it. Thought they paid some nice homage to it here. Was also nice they managed to get the actor who played her to come back and do the VA on this. I liked the finale when I first saw it as it shows the Cerritos saving the day this time 😀

Yes there are dolphins in star fleet. In the TNG show bible there was a room on the enterprise called cetacean operations with some dolphins in it. Actually putting it in the show was a huge treat for star trek supper nerds.
Also fun fact any time you see a character from one of the other star trek shows, like Sonya Gomez, that character will always be voiced by the person who played them in the original show.

Re: the dolphins... Cetacean Ops has been part of the design of the Enterprise since the Technical Manual was released. There have been passing mentions of it in TNG... I believe Geordi was showing somebody around the Enterprise and says, "Have you seen the dolphins?"
I believe they perform navigation related functions. But I could be wrong.
