Red Dwarf | The Beginning | Season 10 Ep 6 | Get Dwarfed

Comments

"Naylor recently confirmed that the version of Chris Barrie's character who appears from Back to Earth onwards is the original, with his return – and whatever fate befell the new human Rimmer – playing out off-screen." https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/chris-barrie-red-dwarf-which-rimmer/

Troy Convers

I'm curious as to where he said this? The only thing I've ever read is that Rimmer is the OG Rimmer and that he's not getting into details because he may want to go back to it if he ever found a way to do it with humor. He's never said Stoke Me a Clipper was no longer cannon as far as I have read. If he did, then that means all of Series 7 and 8 are no longer cannon, and as we can see just from this episode -- that is definitely not the case.

Lizbeth Marcs

Naylor said Rimmer is OG Rimmer; the events of 'Stoke Me A Clipper' are now non-canon. Remember BTE is effectively a soft reboot.

Troy Convers

BLACKADDER! Just be aware that Series 1 is veeery different from the other series and specials. Like "night and day" different. I like it (always did), but it is its own creature. If you thought you got whiplash between Red Dwarf Series 2 and Series 3, Blackadder is about to give you the MOTHER of all whiplashes when it goes from Series 1 to Series 2. I'm firmly in the camp that we have NOT seen the Rimmer who left to become Ace. The Rimmer we see now is an amalgamation of pre-Ace OG Rimmer and S8 Nano!Rimmer (hence the whole "died twice" bit). Future episodes have pretty much reinforced that idea in my head, because it's blatantly apparent that Dave Era Rimmer has no memories of being Ace. The most Doug Naylor will say is that Dave Era Rimmer is OG Rimmer, but that he's not going to say more than that in case he wants to get into it in the future. Series X is definitely on the same level as the BBC era and it is my favorite of the Dave Era series. Don't get me wrong, Series XI and Series XII and the movie are also quite good, but can be a little hit or miss or have some underbaked episodes. Still, some great scifi concepts are rattling around in those series, as well as some decent character work.

Lizbeth Marcs

Back to the End, a Tr**ls and T*****-******s style ep where the current day crew are (time travel or hallucination) thrust back to the events of 'The End' and have to stop #an event# without interacting with their past selves.

Troy Convers

Perhaps, except every "Back to/in" episode involved hallucination and mostly never really happened outside the character's minds.

Nolan

Or to use another Red Dwarf episode title trope: Back to the End.

Troy Convers

Hey gals don't forget to react to can't smell won't smeg (which is cannon and more kochansky) And the AA adverts from the dave era (probably not cannon)

Frank Murphy

Naylor threw in a lazy-ass answer when questioned about Rimmer that this one is the original. Yeah, no explanation why, pfft. πŸ™„

Troy Convers

And this episode title is The Beginning and the first episode was called The End

Tom

Wait, nvm. That original Rimmer overwrote his fate via the Timeslides and blew up shortly after that in Red Dwarf's cargo bays.

Nolan

First episode titled: "The End" Ends with Lister saying "Holly, set a course for Earth, the slime is coming home!" The episode is titled: "The Beginning" and Rimmer says: "Set a course for Red Dwarf, the slime is coming home. I fully expect a series finale to be titled "The Middle" at this point.

Nolan

Rimmer talks about dying, then living twice. And dying from a radiation leak. That's how original Rimmer died. The one that became Ace. And no mention of nanobot Rimmer. So I think the Rimmer in Back to Earth and here IS original Rimmer. My theory is that after the S8 cliffhanger, Nano-Rimmer died, Ace came back and saved the day, then the persona of nano-Rimmer that would've become a hologram was intergrated with Ace's, and more or less turned him back to Rimmer and he stuck around.

Nolan

Been a while since I checked, but I think the making of from now on also act like the commentary track, they do a breakdown fo each episode and that's why it winds up being so long. Also, I think every finale they treat like it could be THE finale, just because they don't know when/if they'll make a new one. It's really hard to get the cast together, which is why there's so much time between seasons. Series 11 and 12 were literally shot back to back just to be on the safe side.

Chris Neumann

Overall, S10 is a mixed bag; three OK episodes (Trojan, Fathers & Suns, Entangled) and three bangers. The production values just got better with each episode and 'The Beginning' looks like a million dollarpounds as a result. I love how they fleshed out the simulant command; Dominator Zlurth gave me severe 'Avon from Blake's 7' vibes. Trust me, you'll know when you first see him in action when you get to that series. When Rimmer went off to form a battle plan, a voice in my head said 'please let Ace turn up'. And speaking of Star Wars references, Rimmer's Reverse Vader moment and his 'Fathers' last jab from the grave could have been a superb excuse for him reverting to his Ace persona. We've had two 'cometh the hour' moments for Big Arn, and I hope this one sticks. Despite the production values, the Blue Midget is basically a Piaggio Ape with thrusters; I hope it can still dance. 😏 And how can you be surrounded in space when you can go in any direction? Cat having insight? Put that on the retcon pile along with his smell sense. And loved the 'slime' callback and the nosethumb at the botched S8 finale. Now onto S11, which starts with my favourite regular episode of the Dave era!

Troy Convers

You can't shit on the quality of the future eps because some are great. But yeah, if they ended it tomorrow, I'd be OK with it.

Troy Convers

I absolutely love this episode! This was a rework of parts of the movie script since they knew by now there was no chance of it getting made. It really made me wish we'd got to see it. The making of this one was particularly fascinating, cos they had soooooo many problems making this series. It's honestly a testament to the whole crew this series turned out as it good as it did.

Sue the Scottish Geek

This episode honestly would have made a great endcap for the show's run as a whole. I'm not going to shit on the quality of the next two seasons or the movie that has so far ended the show's run, but I genuinely would have been satisfied if they'd ended Red Dwarf with this episode with the call back to the final line from the very first episode. That said, Series X actually turned out to be my favorite since VI. Although the show got a serious facelift with the set design and retconned a number of things that I think probably could have been left alone, the series as a whole was a lot of fun. For my money, Fathers and Suns and Lemons are probably my favorite episodes, but there wasn't really a single one that I was genuinely unhappy with. As far as bonus content from Red Dwarf goes, my only desire is for the Pals to experience "Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg" (which I'm fairly certain hasn't been mentioned in any of the posts yet) - it's positively hilarious. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Pals! Me and Mr. Flibble will be here smoking a kipper while we plot a course back to Earth so the slime can finally come home while we wait for the next season!

Raven Stromdans

It's nice that he effectively becomes an officer because he stops pressuring himself to be one. And it takes a special kind of officer to meticulously make the formal reports of infractions of the Geneva convention, win through against the odds -And fill out all the appropriate risk assessment forms.

TuneIntoSanityFM

Even though the series two 'making of is two hours long, it is worth it. There is a lot more BTS footage while they were filming the episodes. Less talking heads after the fact, along with more interaction with the studio audience.

Bruce Bromley

Dave has an hour plus one channel called dave ja vu , which is a nice touch lol

Frank Murphy

The Series X documentary is probably the best documentary for the making of a TV show. It is astonishing that the series turned out the way it did considering the issues they faced. It is 2 hours but it could easily have been longer.

James Cluskey

Love this ep. Rimmer's hero arc was a great payoff. I wonder how long he will remain humble... Anyway great end to a great season. The fact that the last line(ignoring the post credit gag) in this episode and the first episode are the same ("The slime's coming home") I think they thought this might be the end.
