This one hasn't been added to the BSG collection page. I had to scroll back through the main posts page when I saw season 3 had begun.

Chris James

Umm what? Who said it was no reason?

Derek Orr

Thanks for the clarification. I still have my series blu-ray set as backup, but I mainly watch the episodes with digital copies these days. I just remember when the writers strike happened, the show writers drawing attention to the battlestar webisodes as an example of the studios using the way the previous agreement was written to screw over writers and actors.

BTW, the singing in the opening title sequence, that you mimicked, is of the Gayatri Mantra - one of the most famous Sanskrit mantras. When I was in India we chanted it before purification ceremony each week, so even though the chanting melody is a bit different (our pace for instance was a lot faster) I recognized it when I first heard it on the show. It is quite haunting and always beautiful. Om Bhur Bhuvaḥ Suvaha Tat-savitur Vareñyaṃ Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi Dhiyo Yonaḥ Prachodayāt General meaning: We meditate on that most adored Supreme Lord, the creator, whose effulgence (divine light) illumines all realms (physical, mental and spiritual). May this divine light illumine our intellect.

I think a) she still wanted to die after what happened to her on the Pegasus, and b) she knew the explosion was the only way the Cylons would find the planet. Going back to immediately after she was freed, she goes on about wanting Baltar to contact the Cylons because their future is to live together. This is the culmination of that. She's sending a signal, and it works.

Jonathan

Yup. It also wouldn't have just been a case of the military ignoring Baltar - if they refused to settle on this planet they'd be going against what a majority of the civilian fleet wanted. The LAST time Adama defied Roslin, it was because she'd gone off on a religious crusade that he genuinely believed the majority of the fleet didn't support. He was shocked at how many ships jumped away to join her, and it was still a significant minority. Big difference (to him) between overthrowing a President that's irrational and doesn't have the backing of the people, to overthrowing one that HAS the support of the people.

Jonathan

I still can't believe the cylon that helped nuke the colonies actually detonated the nuke that Baltar gave her for basically no reason whaaaaa

Locoturbo

The irony that Adama thinks that rigging an election will eat at Roslyn's conscience when she'll toss people out of airlocks and steal babies without a second thought.....

The Resistance webisodes ARE included on the S3 DVDs. I have watched them from there many times. But they are in the bonus features on Disc TWO of the season. The later webisode series are however, NOT on the DVDs.

Nolan

Well, I meant more in an upsetting the status quo way than writing wise.

Nolan

This takes me back. Anybody remember the season 3 trailer with that Nickelback song? So wrong but so right...

Brendon Waldron

Say anything you want about Galactica, but this show nails cliffhanger endings. Each one improves upon the last. A few spoiler free comments for the gals. As others have said, they did a series of webisodes between seasons because the breaks were so long. These webisodes actually caused a huge issue because there were disagreements over payments and royalties, and they actually prompted a major writer’s strike within a year. Narratively, season one took place over something like 53 days, and season two brought us up to either seven or nine months - I don’t think they remembered when the election was supposed to be, so the time jump brought us back into sync. The missing year, the settlement on New Caprica, what obviously happens next, everything colors the characters and the show. This is obviously a big deal. They spent most of their post-apocalypse lives on this planet, and then the Cylons land. Things will be different going forward. What’s fun about this show is they BS some details - the vote totals were placeholders and the producers later realized no one doublechecked them. I think luckily it worked out. But Roslin on New Caprica is wearing part of her dress from season one, with a winter sweater. Paula raised a great point in why the military didn’t ignore Baltar just like they ignored Roslin in the first season finale and overthrew the government. The answer is look what happened. The presidency was weak, the military overturned it and took over, the fleet ground to a halt, they couldn’t crew the squadrons, they couldn’t refuel, there was public violence. Cain died, calm was restored, and the presidency is now stronger than ever. There was no question that Adama would obey the president’s order. I’m going back to my original thoughts as not to spoil, but my first question was can you imagine what Adama will do if they all get out of this? He’ll throw Baltar in the brig and start the whole damn cycle all over again. 😂 And just on the people in orbit, the people on the ground, and where New Caprica is. Figure the settlement begins. Remember how Cain doesn’t take Roslin’s calls? Now picture Baltar won’t take Adama’s calls. People settle on the planet and don’t report back to the ship. There’s dysfunction. The president is no help. Now we get to the episode. When you saw the market scenes, there were announcements about water rationing and repairs and power failures. People were living in tents and wearing ponchos. No medicine. Dysfunction. I do think a lot about this episode during Resurrection Ship and Pegasus. Cain was a horrible leader. She was brutal and a megalomaniac. But imagine if she was told that there was an election between the school teacher and what’s-his-face who always talks to himself, and she might be ordered to fly orbit around a swampy tent city indefinitely. She’d tell Baltar to pound sand. Look where they are, and what it may cost them. Just food for thought.

Ryan Fisher

It’s been a heck of a season leading to this. Don’t know if you’ve started the third season yet behind the scenes, but you might want to check out the web miniseries “BSG Resistance” that released online shortly before the start of the third season and adds a lot of context to the premiere. it’s only about 25 minutes all combined, and you don’t necessarily have to do a reaction to it. But It’s easy to find on YouTube (one link is https://youtu.be/A1uXKLr3dyc?si=hgJJNqIsouGhxrvc if that helps), and is worth watching. It wasn’t included on the dvd/blu ray releases because at the time, online only content was deemed promotional under union contracts…one of the things the writers strike shortly after, back then was a major issue worth fighting over along with streaming. It might have been mentioned already, but just in case, thought you’d like to know. 🤷‍♂️

The ONE new character the Pals didn't *immediately* declare to be a Cylon...

Ken Quick

One of my favourite cliffhangers ever. Just a stunningly brave move in terms of their direction for the immediate future of the show. You are now over half way through Battlestar Galactica. And while most fans seem to prefer the first two seasons, I prefer the last two. I love the insanity to come, I love the ending, I love it all. If you thought New Caprica was unpredictable, you really aint seen nothing yet!

Simon M

To answer your question - I personally loved it that they made this jarring cut at the "middle" of this episode, for one thing, it showed me that what they had in store for the next season is already so well in the works that I should trust the process, for another, it was very bold and that transition shot on Gauis during his presidency is absolute peak!

Ashtara Levin

My nerdy brain loves the fact that the show makes a point to notify us that the Cylons were "a lightyear away" exactly one year after the bomb went off when they suddenly decided to appear (meaning it took the radiation from the bombing one year to travel the distance between their positions that it took the Cylonc one jump to accomplish).

Ashtara Levin

Baltar. Not my president! :P Also, I was just laughing the whole time when you two were saying you liked Cavill and not doing your usual, "they're a Cylon!" LOL

Ricky

Well at least we know one thing. He really didn't see Chief at any of the meetings. Gotta love Baltar's portrait replacing Roslin's survivor count. You couldn't get a more blatant representation of their priorities. Love how they depict New Caprica too. It's a planet sure, but it's barely habitable. All the background details - nobody seems to be wearing anything made after the attack. There are calls for donation of clothing 'remnants'. No antibiotics. Power is unreliable (and is being run off the landed ships, given the cables coming off them). Everyone is living in tents. Baltar, the most powerful person on the planet, STILL LIVES ON HIS SHIP because it's still the nicest place they have! They've settled, but they haven't constructed anything. They're barely producing anything. They're burning through the last remnants of their pre-war materials. Even if the Cylon's hadn't shown up it looks a lot like Baltar set them on a path to extinction.

Jonathan

It's not at all; this finale is all of the pieces we've seen coming together. Now, S4 writing is throwing shit against the wall...😂

Troy Convers

Brother Cavill is No1. And yes, there is a ... Final Five ...

Troy Convers

One Year Later. I'm pretty sure Gaeta went to work forBaltar cause he got SO disillusioned with the military. That boy is an idealist, and now one of his commanding officers tried to steal an election, and his other CO helped cover it up. Another thing to note about that portrait of Gaius: it's hanging where the survivor count used to be. Seeing Laura as a teacher and happy, and not concerned with Giaus's problems as president tells me one thing: she didn't WANT to be President. Her attempt to steal the election wasn't vanity or ego. She just thought she HAD to. Now that she's been unburdened of the resposibility she seemed so much happier. I think people tend to conflate Laura Roslin the person with Laura Roslin the President, and hate her. She probably hates herself too a bit. But now she's teaching again and happy. This is another fine example of BSG's approach to finales being to throw the board to the floor and following the pieces.

Nolan

I love how much you loved Cavil in Part 1.

Mike Connaghan

So much happened....it's important to keep in mind just how long that year was....they have spent more time now on New Caprica/In Orbit then has elapsed in the entire series so far since the mini series and the apocalypse. Number 1 is Brother Cavil. Number 2 is Leoben. Number 3 is Deana, Number 4 is Simon (the doctor from the farm) Number 5 is Aaron Doral the journalist. Number 6 is of course Caprica 6 and Gina etc...Number 7 is not yet revealed. Number 8 is Boomer/Sharon....and the rest are to be revealed ......

Derek Orr

Too much to go through, but the writing for S2 was on point. Every event lead to this cliffhanger and had a place; no wasted motion at all. Was surprised that your Cylon radar wasn't on for Brother Cavill last ep, especially when he hung a lantern on being a Cylon. Twice. I guess him being older fooled you, Cavill is a charming, verbose little shit in the style of BSG78 Gaius Baltar, thanks to Brother Stockwell's acting. RIP The first half of S3 is gonna be a wild ride, and we finally see the awesome double team of 'Tasche Adama and Lee XL! PEAK BSG04 IS HERE!!!
