I'm right there with you, this episode is up there with I though VI in terms of quality, and just... vibe? The pacing is great, the chemistry is on point, and the characters seem more like themselves again. I'm so glad you noticed Lister giving professor E his jacket, and that whole scene; I can't help but think that if this had been series VII or VIII, he would have just stood there with Rimmer. And Cat reacted like Cat too! And speaking of things that were wonderful to see: This is the first time we see Rimmer switching between hard and soft light. Fanfic writers around the world gave an audible gasp, because this had only been seen in fanfic until this point! Not only that, but it was firmly established fanon that his uniform color changes when he shifts back and forth. We were all collectively flailing! :D Until next time (I'm catching up), let me just tell you that you are both fast becoming the third class vending machine repair technicians of my dreams.

Katrine Myra

To the people at the institute, he would've been a responsible, knowledgeable leader.

Sebastian Bodine

they really should have kept her. it would have been interesting to see Rimmer in an actual relationship

or maybe it was never going to explode regardless. maybe it getting to zero wasn't a production error, and the guys just didn't realize it wasn't working.

Thanks for reminding me how much of a trainwreck X was behind the scenes; that's why the production standards feel 'off' at times and a bit too bland.

Troy Convers

No mention so far of the fact that in the first draft of X this was intended to be the episode that brought Kochanski back, but then budget and timing and other stuff (the making of for this series is incredible, the single most candid documentation of how badly the production was fucked up I've ever seen on a contemporary DVD release) meant the last two episodes had to be completely rewritten and out went Kochanski again. Which is probably why quite a few people find the Irene stuff a bit disjointed. Very curious to see next week's, an episode that was stitched together last minute with green screen and all sorts.

Absent With Concept

While I like the Dave era overall, I would be OK if they called it quits now.

Troy Convers

The regulations for monkeys and apes being kept as pets/workers here in the UK are now super tight, thanks to Jim and Alison Cronin. ❀️

There was a stage version of Totoro at the Barbican here in London last year; a very good production.

Troy Convers

Professor E was seriously adorkable. Given how 'at home' Rimmer felt in the error institute I'm not surprised they bonded! It is a real pleasure rewatching Series X with your reactions. I forgot how much I just enjoyed this one.

Ross Nolan

Great intro and outro. Bon Jovi spoof was chef's kiss. Insomnia and One Hour Photo were pretty good "creepy" Robin Williams movies. I was laughing so hard at the Paula Holiday Inn story. Lol. Like this episode but I was a little bummed out they killed the professor even though it was a good joke. Also they just want to keep the focus on the main four characters.

Travis Boyle

They get into the "chimp" in the behind-the-scenes doc. Originally, they wanted a real chimp, but there are so many tight regulations around using animals on sets that they opted for someone who specializes in playing chimps. It had the bonus of them being able to film the "chimp" in front of a live audience, as opposed to a closed set.

This episode is the weakest in Series X, IMHO, but only because Doug crammed so much into it. I still think it's pretty good, despite the busy-ness of the plot. We have the rare pair of Kryten and Cat bouncing off of each other. Lister's Kochanski obsession getting him (and Rimmer!) into deep, deep trouble. Rimmer actually being the somewhat sane man in the whirl of madness (plus we find out he can now switch between hard and soft light on his own). It still flummoxes me that Rimmer took the news of his entanglement with Lister as well as he did, which seems a little out of character (I fanwank it as Rimmer already knew that without Holly he needs Lister stay alive if he wants to keep existing because the ship's automated systems are now in control.) I forgot that Series X was also the season of the adorable dingbats who make me grin like a loon. We had Jesus last week, and Dr. Eddington this week. There's another one who shows up in one other episode this series as well. And once again, RImmer scores the potential love interest (not that he manages that often). At least now Craig Charles is a good sport about it.

Lizbeth Marcs

Im not much affected emotionally by films... it takes a lot for a movie or show to make me cry... but Grave of the Fireflies messed me up so badly that I still cant watch it. BTW there was a live action movie version as well and I seem to remember that retold the story from the Aunt's POV. Remember the aunt? IDK, of all the anime and Asian movies Ive watched over the years, I still cant go back to Fireflies. Its beautiful & brutal Can you imagine, Grave of the Fireflies was originally released on a double feature with My Neighbor Tototoro? I mean... huh?

Mark Ten

The fans were janky because they were ALSO sychronising behind Cat and Kryten. The smaller ship is Blue Midget, which is not a great name, but goes along with the Red Dwarf name theme. Apparently that chimp was a man in costume??

Nolan

Great episode - thank you maams

Wagoo

Maybe they got the wrong one, but since it's a spudsploder made by Professor E.. then if you disarm it correctly it explodes, but if you mess up the sequence is just drops off

Wagoo

I barely remember most of the episodes after BTE so it's been nice to see these episodes again. It's a pretty solid season so far.

Chris Devlin

Upside down glasses are basically snooker glasses.

Troy Convers

A good episode, but it could easily have been a great one. The script is uneven and the pacing is pedestrian; the macguffin feels like a refresh of the rejuvenation shower from the last episode, the Beggs are just Poundland/dollar store Gelfs. And oh look, another human survived three million and twenty three years into the future and no-one thinks 'hmm maybe Lister and her should figure out a way to kick start the human race?' But no, let's write her so that she gets a rise out of Rimmer. Literally. On the bright side, the B-plot of Cat and Kryten being entangled to the point of speaking in synchronisity is fun, Chris Barrie spins silk out of sackcloth dialogue and the four have great chemistry, a legacy of a long running series.

Troy Convers

Let me just also begin by talking about the holocaust. Now, the comedy!! πŸ˜„ Feels wrong to nitpick but it feels a bit flimsy to me in places, the group choke, calling a chimp a monkey, evolution as a ladder.. I'm still missing the Rob Grant era style. The GELF episode has a similar format and has loads of replay value, the wedding, the return of Ace and Dwayne, I could watch it endlessly. In contrast I'm not exactly rushing to rewatch them counting down greek letters by elimination. Did you notice they used the music from series 1? Take that smeg..! Jesus. ("-Yes?")

TuneIntoSanityFM

I've been watching them all on Dailymotion

Cedric Bombs

Good episode. U app doesn't seem to have series 11, is it anywhere else for free in the UK guys?

Frank Murphy

I can take or leave this particular episode, but that doesn't mean I think it's bad. The synchronicity bit with Cat and Kryten is amusing, while we see both Rimmer and Lister diving deep into fairly extreme exhibitions of the goofier parts of their characterization...but the part about the synchronization helping them come up with a solution for Lister's spud-flinger felt a bit disjointed to me. All in all, solid enough, but not super memorable, as evidenced by how little I could remember of the episode before the plot beats started hitting. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Pals! I'll be here smoking a kipper with Mr. Flibble until the next episode! Hey...who lets these BEGGs into Starbug!? RUN, MR. FLIBBLE! THEY'RE HUNGRY FOR FELT!

Raven Stromdans

A fun fact. Not only did they recycle the GELF's costumes, they brought back Steven Wickham, the actor who played Rimmer's GELF bride in "Emohawk as the BELF chief.

Bruce Bromley

Truly this whole season is solid. If its a choice between living in a world where they just stopped at Series 7 or whatever people say that the show gets bad after which series. Or living in a world where they did make more. And we get this. I'm grateful that we have this and more to come.
