I might be misremembering, but I seem to recall the voice of the vending machine being different during the recording, and that it was dubbed over for some reason? I have no idea, but I do remember there being a discussion about it in fandom over time. As you say, we were all a bit... "what are they trying to say here?"

Katrine Myra

I feel like the joke of Rimmer going through all that and Kryten picking a close-up frame size so he never gets to see Pree's boobs didn't get enough love xD Although come to think of it, if Rimmer had cared a little more about the "personality" setting maybe Pree wouldn't have been a total psycho.

Jonathan

I noticed Kat putting on the gnome right away, but immediately accepted it as a sensible fashion choice and forgot about it.

tal goren

Playing around on DailyMotion back when I first noticed the problem, you either need to go to 1.25 or 1.5 speed to get it to match.

Lizbeth Marcs

Rimmer's words almost read like a disclaimer.

Troy Convers

The Lister and Pree stuff here is brilliant, some fantastic stuff and Doug firing on all cylinders. The Chinese stuff... yeah, it's a bit weird to be discussing racism in an episode which has a white guy doing a comedy Chinese accent, and two actors of colour saying "Taiwan is a bit Chinesey". It feels like Doug is trying to make a bigger point, but I don't know what it is and it's always sat really awkwardly with me.

Absent With Concept

WezMan, Yeah unfortunately that's the truest answer of it all - Kat

Time Lord

That Lister father/son talk scene was one of those instant classic moments that my dad and I would reference it a lot.

Sebastian Bodine

The game literally derives from racial stereotyping....

Troy Convers

Kinda sad that the racist Chinese stereotype crap flew over the heads of most commenters here.

Troy Convers

This is just such a great Lister episode. Craig Charles really shines, despite the fact he was sick as a dog during the episode's production. Per the behind the scenes doc, he was still sick when filming in front of the audience. So him looking like crap wasn't acting so much as acting through. And he still nailed it. That photographic memory of his really came through. Series X is really a good time. Not a bad episode in the bunch. Most of the episodes this series weave together disparate plots that somehow all meet up in the end, which (to be fair) is somewhat reminiscent of the more modern American single-camera sitcoms. As for the sets, the behind the scenes doc for this series is quite fascinating. They basically kept redressing the same sets over and over again because they focused the money on bringing back the live audience. In a strange way, many of the episodes in this series are kind of bottle episodes as a result, but because of the set redressing, you really don't notice it.

Lizbeth Marcs

I love this episode, even if I don't care for the subplot. Also, not so fun fact but Craig was ill with the flu when he filmed this episode and had barely any rehearsal time cos he was off sick.

Sue the Scottish Geek

Really enjoyed this episode. Rimmer and Kryten picking the look of the computer and the Lister "tough love" of his son Lister was hilarious. Lister being a petulant teenager saying I hate you to himself and the guitar part was very well done. The Chinese whisper thing seemed really outdated especially considering Lister and Rimmer were supposed to be from the 23rd Century.

Travis Boyle

I liked this one a lot

Frank Murphy

Your first paragraph is something Rick & Morty also does so well.

Troy Convers

Also love the character growth. Lister uses his brains to save the day, with a brilliant logical deduction that causes Pree to self-destruct. Rimmer is proactively trying to repair the ship (badly but at least he is trying), rather than fighting over petty matters like Ocean Grey/Military Grey paint and red alert bulbs. Cat is still cat, but he has clever (if selfish) hoarding ideas and is very conversational with the vending machines. He also tries to operate the panel to override Pree. Kryten has a social life with all the mini-AIs aboard the ship, and clearly lives for more than just his service to the humans. Also, its clear that all of them are comfortable in each other's company and any resentments are very much in the past, they are friends and know each other very well. I love seeing the journey they have all been on since S1!

Something these two episodes get right, I think, is the idea that Red Dwarf's science fiction concepts should have a serious credibility to them. As in, they could feature in a serious science fiction show with a serious plot. I always think the fun of Red Dwarf, the comedy, is taking these intelligent and credible concepts and having our crew of hilarous buffoons and bums run amok with them. Red Dwarf is funny because our characters are funny, but the science fiction underpinning their adventures, is well considered. I think this is something that was forgotten particularly in series 8. The rest of the universe and every side character doesn't have to be comic, our characters bring enough funny into the universe. Really brill reaction as always, glad you are enjoying series 10. Its not all smooth sailing, but there are a lot of winning episodes coming up in the Dave era.

Simon M

Ahh, thank you. Now I guess I just have to figure out the best speed to watch at.

Nolan

Craig Charles' performance even more impressive when you see in the behind-the-scenes doc that he was sick with the flu while filming the episode.

Lizbeth Marcs

If you are using the U.S. DVDs/Blu-Rays, there was an issue with the PAL-NTSC transfer that resulted in the U.S. versions being slightly slower than the PAL versions. BBC has not corrected this issue at all. Since I have a Britbox subscription (for other shows), I'm just using the online versions of the episodes, which do sync up perfectly with the version the Gals are using.

Lizbeth Marcs

Generally when you have to ask if something is racist the answer almost always is yes.

WezMan444

Ah to paint or not paint. * Guilty side glance at many, many unpainted Warhammer Fantasy minis * Sorry, um, can't relate. This episode was a lot of fun. Pree was a great villain and i loved her 'mad goth bastard' design as Rimmer put it. A Red Dwarf podcast I listen to (Dwarfcast on Ganymede.tv) had an interview with Rebecca Blackstone back in 2012 and she sounded very cool (and also a lot more American than I expected.)

Ross Nolan

Oh man, my DVDs are so out of sync, and I can't figure it out. I think you guys are faster, but by how much? Definitely a frame per second issue.

Nolan

I had forgotten how great this episode is. Lister _literally_ trying to parent himself is such a brilliant idea in the first place, but the way they do it (and the way Craig acts it) is sheer genius. The show dives deeply into Rimmer's self-loathing and mental health issues constantly, but Lister rarely gets the same treatment, even though he has some serious problems of his own. Kat gets to the heart of it when they comment "how is he going to get a job?!" Rimmer may think he's responsible for the accident that got everyone on board killed, but Lister _genuinely thinks_ it's his own fault that he hasn't made anything of himself while three million years into deep space with the entire human race presumably long-dead. Lister arguably isn't any less messed up than Rimmer, he's just more personable and optimistic. So yeah, easily one of my favorite episodes of Red Dwarf period, though my favorite in this series is yet to come...! I do have to mention a recurring theme that's always been interesting to me: Rimmer's weird obsession with unrealistic, exaggeratedly hyper-sexualized women. It feels like someone who is desperately trying to show that he's manly and heterosexual. One of my favorite deleted scenes from the earlier series is Rimmer being led by the hand to Nirvannah Crane's quarters as he tries to run away. Not in a lack-of-consent sort of way, the man is just terrified when confronted with an actual woman. One last thing: When Rimmer is selecting the parameters for Pree and gets to the question about breast size, he comments that he doesn't understand why they _still_ ask that question, meaning it is a standard question in AI setup. Until next time - toodle pipski!

Katrine Myra

This is my first time seeing the DAVE episodes and I've enjoyed the two so far. IMO, it could have done without the 'Chinese Whispers' C-plot. Not for any reasons of race stereotyping, since that was what the game seemed to be called in the UK when R&G were kids. It seemed more to just fill out the episode.

Bruce Bromley

I think asking if "chinese whispers" is racist is dealing with a racist part of our past. It is a problem that there isnt a definitive answer at the end therefore the non-dealing with it is casual racism in of itself. It is a shame.

Hell3Quin

This one is a fav of mine. I love that vending machines are more featured like they were in the very early eps.

Ashley

I'm positive that the bunkroom set is brand new and not a revamped version of Lister's and Rimmer's old prison cell, even though the hue is kind of similar. Admittedly, I'm not an expert in how these things work, but I just don't believe it would have been feasible to hang onto the series VIII sets for over a decade while waiting for another series to be greenlit. The revelation that Lister is his own dad is not a plot twist I was a fan of, but I have to give kudos to Doug Naylor for getting some great comedy out of that concept in this episode. Apparently, I wasn't paying close enough attention at the start and didn't notice Kat sticking the gnome in their hair or realize it was there throughout the reaction.

I just started the video, but I ONE HUNDRED percent disagree with Paula that most media is aspirational, and that's why youth is put forward, as it's what people aspire to be. In the 90's sure, aspirational media was all over the place. Star Trek was the height of aspirational. It was a show about people in their 30s and 40s. Nowadays, there is MUCH more youth focus. Even in Trek, the casts are largely starting in their mid to late 20s. And this isn't down to aspirationality, not given the way the characters in a lot of modern media are now behaving as sassy quip-lords that put themselves over everything else. No, this is down the the new driving force behind media: RELATABILITY. Everything has to be relatable to the audience, their thoughts, ideologies, way of speaking and behaving. It's not about showing growth, it's about reaching out to validate the audience. Above all. And given that most media companies are chasing those 18-45 demographics, and leaning more into the lucrative younger market, THAT is why youth is always being highlighted. Because it's relatable. Everyone is either young, or remembers being young. That's why there's such a stockpile of nostalgia driven content, to tap into youth, and ensure longevity in brands, but it's also why the characters are skewing younger and behaving in popular social ways. Because it's all about the money. I honestly wish media would STOP sacrificing so much on the altar of relatability and cash in on more aspirational works - which tend to be more timeless and ironically, more relatable in the long term.

Nolan

Sorry about the AI, hope you get it sorted. Agree that this episode is a return highlight (sliding sideways twice is never not funny) & seeding the vending machines for later is very good. Also the whole, is this a racist phrase 👍 bc there are a bunch of old phrases we Brits use that have a racist beginning, like "Beyond the Pale".

Hell3Quin

To be honest I noticed Kat but the gnome in and then forgot about. Don't worry Kat you're already unreal, horns or no horns, in the best possible way.

Fathers and Suns may be my favorite episode of the newer series of Red Dwarf. The interplay between Sober-Son Dave and Drunken-Father Dave is fantastically played out and the way all the apparently disparate plots going on the in episode manage to tangle together by the end is some of the better writing that the show has seen in a while by this point in my estimation and actually harkens back to some of the writing in the very first series to me. Anyway, still plenty of good yet to come in the show, so Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Pals! Mr. Flibble and I will be here smoking a kipper while we argue whether we are who we say we are with this horrible new AI I've installed on my phone. IT IS MY BLOODY FACE, YOU SMEGGER! LET ME BACK INTO MY PHONE, DAMN IT!

Hell3Quin

Another misfiring ep from S10. The main plot is fan-smegging-tastic; Rebecca Blackstone's Pree is a great character, reminiscent of Cassandra and Queeg, but far more sadistic in her execution of her programming, thanks to Arnie J being blinded by boob size and not paying attention to personality. No wonder he's single. And remember, Holly is offline because of the bathwater mentioned in BTE. Cat nails his part, natch; Danny John-Jules hasn't lost a step. Yeah yeah yeah! The co-main plot of Lister playing both parts in a father-son relationship is weak in idea, but Craig makes it work by force of will, even if it lacks the sort of pathos you'd expect from a man of Lister's (and Craig's) past. Yeah, pathos, Doug; remember that? While we're on the subject of what Mr Naylor remembers, did he remember that it's 2012 and not 1932? The references and characterisation of Chinese culture in this episode are so jaw droppingly racist it's unreal; I almost expected Charlie Chan and Fu Manchu to pop up. For the record, Medi-Bot, Taiwan Tony, Dispenser 55 are all voiced by...a white Canadian. Yikes on a bike, Doug.*spits on ground*

Troy Convers

Why not get a second gnome and paint that?

Hell3Quin

Personally in my top 5 favourite episodes. Think the whole concept is hilarious
