Red Dwarf | Trojan | S10 Ep 1 | Gallifrey Pals Get Dwarfed

Comments

Awwww yeah! We're cookin' now!! Aooww!

Wagoo

The dedication to Jo Howard. She was the Line Producer and Assistant Director on "Back to Earth" and would have moved up to producer for this series but sadly died just before filming.

Skyrous

X feels more mainstream than VIII, IMHO. It's the growing pains of a new production crew that doesn't quite understand RD's USP and the ubiquities of HD and 16:9. For me me, they only start to get that 'mojo' back with 'Lemons'.

Troy Convers

Not really sure what you mean by "American" - I felt like VIII could be a quite mainstream sitcom-y, and lacking in a lot of the stuff I feel makes RD unique and interesting, but X brings all of that back.

Katrine Myra

Great episode, a nice return to form. Fun fact: Mark Dexter, the actor who played Howard, has been in modern Doctor Who. First as CALs Dad in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, then as Charles Babbage in Spyfall.

Bret Hart

This was a great episode. The moose joke just fantastic. Also loved Rimmer's response to failing the test. Lol. And I feel good don't hurt me. 🤔 Well maybe. No. Lol. Stay awesome Pals.

Travis Boyle

Next episode: blatant racism! 🙄

Troy Convers

Howards End. Heh.

Troy Convers

Agreed with the pacing; it's too much, added in with the overenthusiastic audience laughter and it all seems a bit forced, and American. But, the series does find it's flow by the superb E3, which means you just have to endure the next ep, which is another misfiring dud, with a natty bit of racist troping thrown in.

Troy Convers

Hehe yes, it's me! Kahvi. I just met up with some friends of mine who are also RD fic writers (I do every year) at Gen Con, and I recommended Gallifrey Pals to them. (Hello, if you went ahead and splurged for the Patreon!) And yes, agreed on all counts.

Katrine Myra

Wait...wait...wait. Did YOU write "Dear John"? Because I remember reading the author's note outlining exactly what you said here. {I confess that I've been feeling the fic juices flowing again after a few years out of the game. The only Red Dwarf fic was a cross with the original BSG (1978) series that I co-wrote with a friend years ago. But I've been feeling the itchy fingers on this re-watch. My fic tends to be in other fandoms.) I'd argue that both Chris Barrie and Craig Charles look really good in Series X, both physically and costume-wise. I'm not in love with Cat's styling in Series X, but Danny John Jules does age like fine wine himself. Poor Robert Llewellyn is the oldest of the four, but under the make-up I think he's aging well, too.

Lizbeth Marcs

See? I said to look forward to X

Mark Ten

I agree that Series X feels very "return to form" for Red Dwarf. It does take some adjustment, getting used to seeing the pretty plainly evident changes of aging for most of the cast. The most glaring exception might be Danny, who at least to me doesn't look remotely as aged as the rest of the cast - instead, it's how aggressively camp they went with his costuming that I found a bit distracting when I first watched this series upon release. This time, because I knew to expect it, it didn't effect me quite as much. I am really looking forward to exploring the remainder of this series, especially given how lackluster the reception for Back To Earth proved to be, but in particular the very next episode is legitimately one of my favorite Red Dwarf episodes of this newer era. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Pals! Mr. Flibble and I will be here in thee meantime, smoking kippers while waiting for our hard-drives to defrag so they don't become over-saturated with resentment!

Raven Stromdans

I was a big fan as a child thanks to my parents but after the disappointment of Back to Earth, this was my first real experience of Red Dwarf as a fan in my own right and I was honestly so happy with these first few episodes I saw. I can't wait to see how you react to Red Dwarf in a more modern age. Also, I cannot believe these episodes were 12 years ago. It makes me feel so old!

Joel Featherstone

Yeah, there's zero indication that he did. And I think the episode makes that really clear, tbh. I mean, he's a hologram. He's basicaly immortal.

Katrine Myra

It's such a sweet moment, honestly.

Katrine Myra

(Five hours later) Okay, so not First Comment. I had to delay viewing for a bit, but OMG was it worth the wait. So glad you both enjoyed the first little taste of X! It's funny, I remember disliking the Stirmaster side plot when this first aired, but it hits VERY different now. I'll get back to that, but first: Hey ho pip and dandy! I'd forgotten that was from this episode. I absolutely love that line; it's so fitting, but somehow unexpected at the same time. Man, there's some fantastic writing in X. And y'know, a line like that really only works when it's played absolutely straight, which both Chris and Kryten do so brilliantly. It really sets the tone for what's to come. And, uh, not to be basic but OMG, Rimmer looks GOOD in this series. Do I mean Chris or Rimmer? I mean, I guess I mean that the look they give him is so on point. I know I said the BTE uniform is my favorite, but this one is just *chef's kiss* too. I also really like that they hit us with some lore right away. Not just about Rimmer's family, but they're expanding and explaining the universe more, in a really non-infodumpy way (IMO). And I say that despite the fact that this episode forced me to have to rewrite a fanfic I'd worked on for ages and was about to publish...! (And then had to revise again after the last episode in the series.) To paraphrase a joke - "I let Trojan punch me in the face, and I thanked it for it!" Now, the Stirmaster thing - it annoyed me when I first saw it. I thought it was way too silly and over the top, and Lister's reactions seemed entirely out of character. I was puzzled by the whole thing, but just shrugged it off. Color me surprised that when I watched it again today... I got it. I don't know what it is; maybe that I'm older and closer to Craig/Lister's age at the time, maybe it's having experienced the pandemic, but I 100% get it now: Hyperfocusing on something stupid because it becomes sybolic of Something Fun. There's so little going on, and can't you have just this ONE thing, please? His breakdown, which made me cringe when I first saw it, also resonates. Like, yep. I'm right there with you, Dave. Get the smegging Stirmaster. The only thing I'm not super fond of, and that may go for all of X, I don't remember, is that the pacing is almost too frantic. Like they're making up for lost time, heh. As I've mentioned before, I'm a fan of the slow, introspective sides of the show, and there isn't really a lot of that here. But there will be. Hey ho, pip and dandy! *Rimmer salute*

Katrine Myra

I don't think he has. Simon's theory above is that there's a time skip involved at Howard's end where he was pulled into the future. Or, he could be revived on occasion when Crawford and her Simulant Cohort need a a Trojan horse to lure ships with better tech to them.

Lizbeth Marcs

I loooooove (all but ONE) of the Dave era episodes. I love how in the Dave incarnation of the crew really is a crew that puts up with each others' nonsense -- the same nonsense that would've resulted in a yelling match during the BBC era. Plus, every single one of them have gone feral to a certain extent. You definitely get the feeling that none of them would be able to fit into polite society at this point, even when they have the opportunity to give it a try. Series X is my favorite of the Dave-era series (it shares a strong focus on Rimmer and Lister stories), just edging out Series XI. Series XII is mostly good to great, but it has one REAL dog of an episode that ranks as my second-lowest episode in the entire series run, so as a result it's in last place. It's above Series 7 and 8, but that one bad episode does leave a really bad taste. Otherwise, kick back and enjoy the ride. I'd put Series XI on par with Series III, and Series X on par with Series IV, easily (I still hold that Series V is my high water mark, and I don't think it's been matched).

Lizbeth Marcs

Yeah, Craig and Simon Gregson made a great double act in Corrie. I was glad they were able to include him in BTE, especially since from what I gather Simon is a Red Dwarf fan himself.

Sue the Scottish Geek

Does make you wonder how Howard survived 3 million years. 🤔

Troy Convers

Really enjoyed this episode. Series 6, 7, 8 and 9 were all experiments, and its nice to see a return to the core formula. Absolutely everyone is on point with their characters - I particularly like that Cat has more to do. Everyone goes along with Rimmer's plan because they're his old friends, its pretty unambiguous at this point. Howard Rimmer was great, he nailed the role too. It was great to see that Rimmer wasn't the only one his awful parents messed up, and that perhaps the entire percieved success of his family is lies upon lies, each brother pretending to reached the top just to placate the insane expectations of their abusive parents. Arnold outlasted them all though. There's an interesting continuity consideration in the episode. The Quantum Rod pulls Howard and Crawford from the past into Red Dwarf's era. Howard is familiar with Mechanoids, therefore he must have lived for quite a long time as a hologram as they weren't invented in the age before Red Dwarf had its accident. He is familiar with the Quantum tech, invented at the height of the Space Corp, and heaps praise upon Simulants as the new way forward. It gives an inkling as to what happened to humanity. Howard's ship was attacked by an unknown foe, with only Howard and Sim Crawford surviving. Crawford is the Trojan, Cylon-like agent who lowered the defenses and allowed the ship to be attacked by her fellow simulants. She perhaps spared Howard as she was less interested in killing a fellow artificial life form, or perhaps held-off on revealing her agenda and killing him when the possibility of accessing the Quantum Rod manifested. But, repeat across the galaxy. Simulants in key trusted roles enabling the slaughter of humanity. Perhaps for every sophisticated agent like Crawford, there were hundreds of crude warrior types (like the ones from "Justice" and "Gunmen of the Apocalypse") at their command. Fun to think about anyway.

Simon M

feels good to have that pacing back. Also cool new pfp... i wonder where that came from... hehehe

GillyBean

Now he just does drunk on air DJ. 😑

Troy Convers

while Corrie often does deal with darker issues right now they have stories about a cult, MND and grooming. it  also balance it with comic stories and interactions to keep things from getting to dark Craig Charles did do comedy and drama.

Alex Bennett

Enjoyable season. I think 11 was the best of the dave era for me, this season probably 2nd. Then fathers n suns n lemons next which is sweet n spur goodness lol

Frank Murphy

A definite return to form for Red Dwarf

Martyn Hill

This is a nice return to the studio bound sitcom, after Back to Earths more cinematic filming style. I think that maybe the difference in Craig Charles performance…like all the cast he performs much better in front of an audience. I love all the callbacks in the set dressing, particularly in the bunks (lots from the episode Me2…Listers photos, the Mugs Murphy cartoon poster, Rimmer’s cutout headlines). Some good episodes to come in this run too.

Jakob1978

I beg to differ. The first two episodes of Dave-era are a bit rough, to be honest; Trojan is very hit and miss. The one good thing is the main plot of sibling rivalry aka Rimmer Vs Rimmer. Chris Barrie slipping into his comfortable pre 'Stoke Me a Clipper' Rimmer (yeah, don't ask about how he's a hologram again) and Mark Dexter showing the family trait of being an utter git. The secondary plot of Lister and his stupid call centre shenanigans is just boring, except for Kryten freaking out at the call centre operator and the punchline of the simulant tea stirrer. Cat is thankfully still Cat, and nails his contribution. The big problem with the episode lies with the production. It's like the production crew hadn't got to grips with 16:9 HD; it seems bland and well, 'American', like a sitcom pretending to be Red Dwarf. Dare I say it, it feels more like RDUSA. They do get the hang of it over time and most later episodes have more of an authentic feel, but this one, Rimmers and Cat apart, is a bit of a dud.

Troy Convers

I love Series X! I think visually this season is the best. All the costumes, sets, cgi and vfx this season are just so good. Craig was still doing Corrie at this time, but after this when he tried to negotiate his release to do more series, Corrie said no, so he opted to leave. I'm not a soap fan, but Corrie is actually really good. and I miss Craig;s character in it The Corrie actor who was in the pub with the cast in Back to Earth, Simon Gregson, has actually been on Corrie his entire adult life, and his only other acting credit is for that one episode of Red Dwarf, which he is a fan of!

Sue the Scottish Geek

After the very broad humour of VIII and... whatever BtE was, I wasn't expecting Doug could really recapture what made Dwarf Dwarf, so was nervous first watching this. It started well, but the moose callback scene where Cat got an enormous laugh just from walking into the room was the moment I knew the show was back. Brilliantly structured and rooted completely in the characters.

Absent With Concept

Aaaah! Okay, I'm gonna watch right away and maybe get first comment! :D (Yes I know, but this one doesn't count.)
