BATTLESTAR GALACTICA | Final Cut | Season 2 Ep 8 | First Time REACTION

Comments

Well, when Original Boomer flew down to Caprica, left Helo, and brought Baltar back to Galactica, she would have been in range of TONS of Cylon BaseStars and other ships, so maybe that proximity allowed the Cylons to get a full download they could put into the Sharon that Helo met on Caprica. We have to assume they have some sort of internal transmitter that sends their memories home when they die. I mean, unless you think souls not only exist, and Cylons have them, but also they have harnessed some technology to catch them after a Cylon body’s death, without the Cylon body’s assistance…

Trey Harris

I agree generally—it seems like what the show’s trying to tell us is the answer. But still — it’s not a perfect explanation. How did the Cinema Cylons get the final cut (or any footage shot after the Raiders were destroyed, for that matter), or know it was shown throughout the Fleet? Either the Raiders were cover for some other spacecraft (a transmitting probe or whatnot) to arrive and go into stealth mode so it could transmit the video later, or the Raiders didn’t actually have any part in getting the footage back and it happened by some other unexplained means? Or maybe a Raider jettisoned a data beacon for later retrieval once the Fleet jumped away. For all we know, the cinema scene could have happened weeks later.

Trey Harris

It's unlikely the D'anna at the end with the Cylons was the same one on Galactica. How'd she leave and return to Caprica? This was a planned reconnaissance mission. The D'anna on Caprica would have known they sent two raiders to relay the footage back.

53:06 "They don't share memories in real time." Correct. They're not networked like the Borg. When one is killed it's consciousness and memories are uploaded to be downloaded into another body. At that point those memories are accessible to the others (not sure if that's just across each model or all Cylons). It's not 100% consistent. Boomer and Caprica Sharon both had Boomer's memories of Boomer and Chief Tyrol being together even though Caprica Sharon was on Caprica with Helo before Boomer was killed. Maybe that's writing, or maybe it's just in some cases it can be done, since Caprica Sharon was set up to meet Helo, she would have needed all of Boomer's memories to maintain her cover.

John

A note on the production of this episode and the intrusiveness of the cameras - a note I'm making now because I've known it so long I didn't think about it as being potentially unknown to new viewers - but the 'in-universe footage we see as part of what D'anna is filming was actually what was filmed by Lawless and her Co-star on set as they acted and had the studio cameras rolling. Anytime you see either of those two holding a camera in shot, it's recording. Any time you see the camera footage, it's what they filmed while the scene was playing out and filmed around them. This also likely explains why the cameras were so intrusive, and not filmed wide angled and zoomed: in order to get the feel of a documentarian trying to capture as much of the action as possible, the actors and their cameras had to move around a lot. Filming from a distance would mean higher risk of capturing actual film crew and equipment, rendering the footage unusable in editing. Hence the tight focuses and up close shooting style, to obtain the maximum amout of usable footage as they could get. This episode represents the truest version of RDMs vision for the series, a space show presenting itself as so realistic, it was a filmed documentary.

Nolan

Oh, Starbuck, you didn't need to go all the way back to Caprica, the Arrow of Apollo was RIGHT there all along!

Nolan

The reaction when Apollo almost drops his towel.... 😆
