lil skippy #8 - ted lasso is from another decade

when did this show get so outdated and preachy about things we all learned 10+ years ago?

I could not agree more about the SHOCKING GAY STORYLINE!!! Give me a break! This is such a non-issue now. Not in life, of course - there are important statements to be made against the current regressive political attacks from the Rabid Right - but they didn't go there. The issue of a gay player in pro sports is only significant if we see how fan homophobia impacts his career, but they didn't go there either - and yet that's where the real-world complications and stakes are greater. When Trent saw Colin with his boyfriend, they implied that he might 'out' him in the book he's writing (he still might) but did I like how they handled it with his unanticipated compassion and empathy. HOWEVER, it smacked of a "very special episode" trope from the '90s, or an After School Special (dating myself here!) They compounded the problem with the companion story of Keeley's sudden lesbian conversion. WTF is that all about? There's been NO previous indication of this. I think it comes from the male fantasy lesbian fixation: "Two girls together are hot! - two dudes? GROSS!" Why was this not a surprise or an issue for ANYONE - not even Roy: "I hear you have a girlfriend now..." I am not suggesting it should have been an issue, but it felt like forced REPRESENTATION!!! rather than dealing with a character struggling with a newly discovered aspect of their sexuality. They played the same bullshit move on THE MORNING SHOW when Reese Witherspoon's character suddenly lunged at HER lesbian boss in a moment of uncontrollable sapphic passion. If either scene (like the one between Keely and her boss, Jack) were played out with a hetero couple it would have been sexual assault, but because "chicks kissing is hot" on TV, it was beyond question. That's when the show jumped the shark for me. And they landed on the other side of the shark with Jamie Tart's creepy incestuous Norman Bates impression with his Mummy in the last episode! So long, Ted, it's been good to know you!

Yeah, they are using the freedom of series not needing to have a fixed running time to become unwieldy and unfocused. It worked much better in smaller bites. It's like when authors like Stephen King become so powerful they become un-editable. The series has become a coffee table book when it should be a short-story anthology.
