You perfectly articulated not only what makes these shows work as both horror and tv (something that’s rarely attempted and even more rarely successful) but what makes them special. Your point about Flanagan’s ghosts being more than just metaphors was brilliant. They’re more than just representations of trauma, they also involve the work of facing trauma, making it part of your larger self.
