The rimmer song is a massive ear worm!

I LOVE the idea of Cat and Kochanski butting heads instead of Kryten and Kochanski! It makes so much more sense. Others (and I myself in comments on previous episodes) have mentioned how the dynamic with Kochanski and the rest of the crew doesn't quite work, and we really just see more of it here. The Opera Game joke is actually quite funny, but in context and for the character it's just... odd. I do think it highlights an issue: The Opera Game joke works because the humor lies in Kochanski's interests being so different to those of the others that they struggle to even understand what they are. This is what Rimmer provided and which is now missing; the comedy that comes from an odd couple dynamic... however, the power dynamic is different. Kochanski genuinely is better educated, more experienced and has better social skills than the others. She doesn't fit into a Rimmer-shaped hole. And on that note...! While this episode most certainly is not the reason why people ship Rimmer and Lister, it certainly is a treat for fans of both characters and their dynamic. The kiss is the least interesting thing about it; what I love about Blue is how we explore, perhaps for the first time, Rimmer and Lister's relationship to one another. Lister talking about his feelings, and how he genuinely misses Rimmer actually feels very authentic to me, when it so easily could have been made into a "lol, having feelings is girly" joke. That said, I agree that the kiss is quite sweet in how Chris and Craig were so cool about it, but what we get in the episode is nothing compared to what they actually filmed. (What is informally known as "the extended kiss" in fandom.) When straight male actors kiss on screen in a comedy, there will usually be a lot of exaggeration and some toxic masculinity involved, but here it's quite the opposite. I would LOVE to see y'all react to it! Well, I'm late to the party as usual, so I'm going to head right over to the Beyond a Joke reaction. Toodle Pipski!

Kryten's personality foibles would of been alright if it stopped after what happens next episode. But it continues on in episode 7 as well.

Apart from one or two gags and the Munchkin Song, this feels like one of the weakest eps in Red Dwarf so far - but still better than Backwards. It feels very samey to Duct Soup and so drags for me, there is not much of a coherent thread that pulls the whole thing together. Kochanski suddenly has an opportunity to return home - that is pulled from nowhere. You have the 3-4 minute scene where Lister is a prick - again - and sabotages it. It ends and is not mentioned again. There is a coherent story here but it doesn't quite get there for me. Feels like a succession of scenes with jokes that needed more tightening up. Also Kryten is getting unbearable now. The conflict is too much and isn't even necessary. There is already conflict here. Kochanski and Lister's relationship isn't exactly smooth sailing and is rocky at best. Sure, Kris means well and does help out with the emotional baggage but their is that natural conflict as she tries to fit into a world she cannot stand and doesn't understand. There is the conflict. It's there with Games Night, with how she runs things on her ship, with how she compares them to her crew. It should be there with Cat and Kyten in little doses over those little things that grate whenever a new dynamic is introduced into a group of friends. Then we see those whittled away as the character grows and settles into life on Starbug. The constant hammering by Kyrten is so, so tiring now and stopped being even remotely amusing an episode and a half ago. Red Dwarf is primarily a comedy and that has dipped in the 2/3 eps for me. I love the pathos that Red Dwarf brings to it's stories but the balance feels out and clumsy at the moment. The shift of the antagonistic character from Rimmer to Kyrten is jarring as with Rimmer, there was sympathy for how he turned out. Sure you hated him from time to time but you knew the shit he had gone through to be that way. Kryten is now dick because the writing says he is so he loses that sympathy. The jealousy and abandonment angle only goes so far to excuse him and, personally, that point was passed last ep.
