Red Dwarf | The Making of Series 6 | Gallifrey Gals Get Dwarfed

Comments

The only ones watched so far seem to be 1, 2 and 6

Hey gals you've probably been asked this a million times but are you going to watch more "the making of red dwarf" episodes? X

Siobhan

I just remembered, literally as I was posting the above - I saw Craig at Dimension Jump (the RD convention) in 2006, and he started his panel by saying "it's been an interesting year, for me" to which the audience erupted in laughter and applause.

Katrine Myra

Thoroughly enjoyed re-watching this with y'all! Man, yes Craig Charles. I love Craig. I really do. I've met him twice, and the man is almost pure charisma and lovely to be around. As he himself points out in the documentaries, he was fairly wild when he was younger, which he credits in part to becoming successful at an early age (he was in his teens when he started performing) and kind of just going bananas. He mellowed out as he got older, but he's been struggling on and off with addiction. The reason why he looks so tired in the 2007 documentary is that he had a reaaally rough time in 2006. He bounced back impressively though, and seems to be doing well today. I also cannot wait for you to see the mini-series/movie...! Judging by what you've liked of the series so far, I think you'll really enjoy it.

Katrine Myra

This is a marvellous interview with Patrick. Best I've seen.

That was really enjoyable seeing a reaction to this from people that actually work in this business. Thanks. That was great. And they do have documentaries in the later Series. If I remember correctly the one from Series 10 is close to 2 hours long.

The part when Doug is talking about Rob's ability to hold his nerve is part of what made Red Dwarf so good. The tightness of the scripts, the exploration of ideas, the characterisation was so good in this first six years. And that was down to both Rob and Doug working together and driving each other on to not except mediocrity. The bit Doug was talking about in this where Rob wouldn't accept any idea until 3am was for a radio sketch show called Son of Cliché. They needed one more sketch for next day recording and they were well and truly stuck. In complete exhaustion and desperation they hit upon the idea that they gave the name of 'Dave Hollins - Space Cadet'. Dave is all alone and 7billion (or 300 in later sketches) into deep space after the crew is wiped out by a chameleonic life form..... Sound familiar. I do wonder how much this 'seat-of-pants' writing took its toll on both of them by the end of series 6 and how sustainable it was. But that tightness of script and ideas, to me, is lacking from this point on. Understandable with new writers being bought in or just resting solely on Doug's shoulders. I liken it to Queen after Freddie died. The new music they created was good, in places, but not great. Sounds like they would settle for ok when they used to drive each other on to be even better than that.

As far as smoking goes, the past is truly a different country.

Kat, you asked whether you get to see Craig and the others interviewed after the feature-length episode in 2020 - in addition to a 30-minute behind-the-scenes show, there's another 3-part documentary called Red Dwarf: The First Three Million Years (narrated by David Tennant) which you can watch. It does cover some of the same ground as the Making of Series, though, but it's a bit more of a retrospective with interviews with all the cast. Craig is a lot more mature (as you would hope!)

David Tully

Fun fact: The Gallifrey Gals have a higher budget than Red Dwarf.

I believe laughing about tragedy or almost tragedy (referencing the escape pod falling toward the camera) in retrospect ties well into the British resolve. The stiff upper lip, managing to stay above ground and laughing because if you don’t, you’ll cry. Of course everyone manages these emotions differently but, if you have an emotional outlet, a confidante, you’ll survive and in the end, it’s all stories we can smile about.

Geraint Harrison

Loved it! If you want to hear more of Robert Llewellyn's real voice look up his brilliant CarPool interview series on YouTube (he was the first to do that format back in the day). He interviewed Patrick Stewart, and most of the RD cast and some of the crew. More recently there's his Fully Charged YouTube channel about renewable energy / vehicles and environmental stuff - his channel is pretty big these days Here's his Patrick Stewart CarPool interview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvNMYqWZ4BM

If you get the chance, check out "The Blood Doner" referenced as a use of autocue for performance. It's one of the most famous episodes of Hancock's Half Hour in UK . Broadcast in 1961, it's become a "classic" in UK situation comedy.

Lemmy's Mole

A couple of British cultural references mentioned in this episode. Ainsly Harriott went on from Gelfdom to become a well known TV chef. https://youtu.be/ZUJJdeByJa0?si=10ukHC5gQzzWvNMx and Tony Hancock was a very famous comedian whose blood donor sketch from 1961 is a classic of British TV comedy https://youtu.be/AdNFb19pLac?si=JuDxZ5_x8AOFJo9M

Great reaction! I think these are some of the best 'behind the scenes' features ever made. Helped in no small part by all the shenanigans that happened in the making of the show!

Doug and Rob split as writing partners in 1993 and there was a bit of frostiness there (it is addressed in the Series VII doc). They did reunite in 2006/07 to finish off the script for Bodysnatcher. Rob also agreed to film an interview for the Series I and II documentaries, after having previously declined to appear for Series III-VI. When Series I and II were released on DVD in 2002, they didn't do the full documentaries yet, so they were done for "The Bodysnatcher Collection". Sadly in 2020, Rob (along with the other directors of Grant Naylor Productions) kicked Doug out as a director at GNP and Doug took them to court. Doug won the legal battle last year and now Doug has the rights to make more TV Red Dwarf while Rob also has specific separate rights (and is looking to make some sort of prequel/spin-off).

James Cluskey

Rob and Doug have sadly not made up. They've only just come out of the other side of a protracted legal battle over the Red Dwarf rights, and even after that it looked like Rob's side decided to scuttle the official Red Dwarf site and social media. It's all still very sad and messy, and it's why there's not been any more Red Dwarf made since 2020. Rob is working on a spin off prequel but it's not been greenlit yet, and Doug's still trying to get more of the main show made (which would have already happened if not for said legal battle). Craig and Chris were actually getting along well by series 6, but Craig hitting the horse nearly ruined that...from what I understand they almost got into a proper fight over what happened. I'm so glad I was too young to be watching the show back at this point cos I'd have gone spare with a four year cliffhanger! I think Craig was very immature when they were filming these series. I don't think he's as bad these days, and after all these years they're all still working with him! Back in the 90s everyone smoked everywhere in the UK, no smoking signs were perennially ignored by just about everyone.

Sue the Scottish Geek

It's interesting to see these again while getting the perspective of two people who actually work in that industry. Maybe it's because I have a lot of similar stories from my time in the military that people will say "Wow, that is fucked up! How are you even laughing at that!?", but until I heard you to exclaiming it never really struck me how much of a dangerous mess this series of the show actually was behind the scenes. To say nothing of not quite realizing how much of a dangerous on-set diva Craig Charles seems to be. It's interesting what happens in one's brain when time has sort of worn away the sharp edges of otherwise traumatizing experiences and, if you're lucky enough to the survive them, sometimes instead of PTSD you just end up with a particularly dark sense of humour about almost getting killed by some nonsense your colleague did because they thought "it would be a laugh". Fantastic work they ultimately manage to pull out in the end, one of their highest lauded seasons. Wild stuff. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! Rest up and I look forward to tackling Series Seven with you next!

Raven Stromdans

I'm sure they've already done it few weeks ago. Think I remember them watching it.

When you have a chance, Paula and Kat, have a look at David Tennant's hilarious opening monologue | EE BAFTA Film Awards 2024. Would actually love to see your reaction to it. He is so good as a front man for this. Projecting effervescent jollity!
