Chris Barrie steals every scene. Check him out in "Britta's Empire," where he plays the lead. He's amazing!

Chris Bordeman

yes. I agree. I know we are here for the gals and not the show, but my OCD/FOMO keep making me wonder what I am not seeing.

For S3 E1, firstly, there is a block of text right at the very start - literally before the opening credits - which you *must* read in order to understand some changes in continuity. Also, here’s your weekly reminder to watch the clips of that particular episode reversed online as there is a gold-standard joke that can only be heard in the reversed clips, but only watch straight after watching the episode. This one will do, but there are others. Don’t click on the link yet, just bookmark/favourite it. https://youtu.be/A19LLHSOF80?si=HNInHoY_NYFb_40J

Not through all the episode, it started at some point in the “they are dead, they’re all dead” scene.

Aidan Lunn

It’s not through all of the video. It starts at some point in the “they are dead, they’re all dead” scene.

Aidan Lunn

Hardly “silently”. It’s half of the text at the start of S3 E1.

Aidan Lunn

Luckily Kryten is quickly and silently replaced with a new actor and much better looks.

Chris Bordeman

Aren't the stains on Listers spacesuit red paint? From repainting the ship in the opening credits...

Paul Flux

Not exactly creeped out by the way Kryten looks, but really creeped out by the concept. In some ways, it has a similar artificial lifeform vibe to it as The Girl In The Fireplace episode of Doctor Who, but actually slightly more so. Kryten wasn't real enough, due a lack in his programming, not to notice that the crew had died and carried on doing all his daily tasks around them as nature took it's course on the bodies. Extremely disturbing. Nobody actually programmed Kryten to notice either the lack of response, the fact of the deaths or the physical characteristics of the subsequent decay. It took the input of the Red Dwarf crew actually saying that they are dead to initiate the proper response and, even then, he couldn't correlate properly that it had been carrying on around these dead bodies for possibly decades, 'talking' with them as if they were alive. Interesting that it reminds me of the attitude that some politicians have to societal decay. They only notice something is desperately wrong when they want you to vote for them.

Josef Schiltz

this is a great ep. From a notable moments perspective and from a laying groundwork for future stuff perspective as well. I really want a framed print of that Rimmer on the toilet painting.

Ashley

Feedback on the new layout: Not a fan. Between both of your images overlayed on the screen it looks like we're missing 40-50% of the show image. New logo is excellent, glad to see all the socials on display, but... If this had been the layout with TNG or Who I'm not sure I would have stuck around. Maybe would have watched the episodes myself and just left y'alls on audio in a tab somewhere in the background. Reactions and banter still amazeballs as usual though. :)

I'm a little disappointed that you're watching the bloopers on a season by season basis, because for the first six seasons, there's special compilations of them (with a ton of fun extras) which is how must of us saw them. They're called Smeg-Ups and Smeg Outs, FWIW. Trivia time! Kryten's name is inspired by The Admirable Chrichton, a play written by JM Barrie about a group of shipwrecked aristocrats who must depend on their ingenious butler to survive. I wouldn't be surprised if John Chrichton in Farscape was inspired by the same work. Because UK shows are so short, they don't save much (or any) of their sets, so everything needs to be rebuilt. This is why the drive room, the corridors, and even the bunk room are different. But because they're thinking ahead, they can add stuff that won't be important until later (the snowglobe with the model RD inside that smashes in Rimmer's death video is on the captain's desk in the first episode, fox example). The stains on Lister's spacesuit are from him painting the ship in the opening. Given that you bring it up every time, I was wondering if you'd catch that. The gorilla on Lister's shirt is an original character called Mugs Murphy, who's the star of the cartoon being watched in Me2. The language they're speaking in this episode is Esperanto, and you'll notice a bunch of signs on the ship written in Espeanto and English (Level Nivelo 159, Cinema Kinejo etc). Also, now that I think about it, if Rimmer's been in the company 15 years, he should be able to speak the language just through osmosis. In the original series, Holly was mostly intended to be a voice-over. When they decided he would get more face time, they got rid of his pixelized appearance (this is also why he's got a big screen in the drive room now rather than the smaller monitors). Androids, the show Kryten is watching, has "A Groovy Channel 27 Production" in the credits. The channel is mentioned in "Future Echoes" when Lister points out that they have a hologram newsreader. Also: First appearance of Blue Midget (referred to in dialogue as White Midget) First mention of the nicknames Ace and Bonehead. Rimmer's "Clive Of India' uniform is different than the one he wore in Me2.

Chris Neumann

Oh yeah, the Nova 5 had a crew of 6 or so, definitely smaller and more efficient.

Chris Neumann

Enjoy the A&W restaurants as well.

Travis Boyle

The slobbiness is a thematic joke in that the last human alive isn’t some heroic figure but just some scruffy, slobby guy - I think if I was faced with the prospect of being alone in space as the last of my species (or not alone but stuck with this crew) I’d be pretty slobby too. The books are a deeper exploration of all of this if you want to read them after you’ve watched a few more series / seasons (and seriously don’t worry about that). It’s rare for anything in the U.K. to be clearly categorised, lots of comedy has plenty of drama and plenty of dramas are pretty funny (No Offence is a really good example of this).

Kieran B

Oh...as Holly would say - "Additional" Noting your confusion in the size differences between the Nova 5 and Red Dwarf, it should be pointed out that we were seeing Red Dwarf *in orbit* compared to the Nova 5 in the foreground crashed on the planetoid. I could be wrong, but I feel like the Nova 5 was most likely significantly smaller than Red Dwarf and that perspective was a bit misleading as the Dwarf was meant to be thousands of miles in the distance in orbit in the shot where we saw both ships in frame. ...now shutting off Pedant Circuit.

Raven Stromdans

The ending of this episode is one of my favorite interplays of the characters of the show during the first series; watching Kryten indulge in some very Lister-esque rebelling against Rimmer is absurdly satisfying. This episode lays the groundwork for a number of stories that come up in later seasons and I'm chomping at the bit to see you two make the connections later on. Something that I feel is unspoilery that I think is worth sharing is that in future seasons, Lister's slobbiness gets a bit toned down so that it's more often either exhibited through his food choices or spoken of off-hand, rather than being exhibited on screen, a change which I think both of you will end up appreciating. In any case, loving following the series with you and looking forward to the next episode! I wish you, as always, a... Good Journey!

Raven Stromdans

I’ve been watching this show for over 30 years and I’ve only just realised that Kryten throwing soup that looks like gazpacho on Rimmer’s bed is pouring extra salt in the wound.

pbaker

Fantastic stuff guys... only thing I would say is I think your mix of the video vs reactions is slightly off by a second or 2, it seems you're reacting to stuff that hasn't quite happened yet or is happening as you're reacting. Definitely something to look at.

Nick Turner

Oh yeah, love the Underground font they use. The cropping for he show is a little claustrophobic but otherwise very solid.

Chris Neumann

Root Beer: Admittedly it's an acquired taste. I myself love root beer! Barq's - My all time favorite! As their slogan goes, "Barq's has bite". Plus a little caffeine, and it doesn't have any artificial foaming agents that can give other brands a soapy taste to them. A&W - I don't care for this brand. I don't like vanilla and they put way too much in there. In fact, they got in trouble awhile back as their marketing and product labels said, "Made With Real Aged Vanilla", and it turns out it was not 'real' vanilla after all. IBC - Tastes too minty/mediciney to me, as does some of the other fancy brands. I used to like Hires but they don't make it anymore. Mug is okay, as is Fanta and the Polar Soda brand. Supermarket brands usually suck. That's my take anyway.

Henchman Twenty1

They also changed actors for S3. I think at this point, if I recall correctly, Kryten was just meant to be a one-off character for this episode. Then later on the show's creators were like, "Hey, what about that mechanoid they rescued? What did they do with him?"

Henchman Twenty1

Oh for context "Androids" is a parody of an austrailian soap opera called Neighbours. We had it here in the UK until quite recently.

Paul Baldwin

ooh, liking the new graphics!

Makhiel

You were about a second ahead of the show which was slightly distracting as you laughed before the punchlines, but great reaction nonetheless.

Wilss

It's okay, the prosthetics get a lot better.

Scribbles

I can totally see the "creepy" reaction to Kryten. Thankfully the look gets refined quite quickly because to this day, having re-watched the show multiple times over decades, this initial iteration still creeps me out no end every time I see it.

Paflad

At the least, Red Dwarf can clearly still surprise you :D.

Jasper de Vries

So in the uk our children do learn spot books when they start to read but we also had a boy called Ben in our pre school books for learning, at 38 I can still remember that “This is Ben” “ Ben can run” “ see Ben run” “Run Ben run” Etc etc

LonghillAndy

The 'lads' humour stuff should be embraced tbh, these guys are desperate lol You will see huge self awareness from the writers in the last episode of season 2 regarding these characters. I have my popcorn ready for watching you react to that one. New format is pretty good btw, big improvement.

Rob G

Yeah the make up for Kryten was notoriously unpleasant to wear. Especially for David Ross here who is also a bit claustrophobic and found the process of making the mask really uncomfortable and frightening.

Juzzie

The cello joke is definitely rude. If you have to add more strings... well, if you play sitting down you have to... well... your legs...errr. Never mind. More lads humor and its only a 2 second joke. Ive come across British jokes about women cellists before, not sure what the humor was. Anyway, Kryten...? Just hold on for a while.

Mark Ten

Yes! The language Rimmer was learning at the start was Esperanto. Since doing a bit of Esperanto on Duolingo, Rimmer’s lessons are definitely easy to understand - and the fact that the language is supposed to be easy to learn and Rimmer has been studying it for years just shows how much he struggles with that sort of thing. All of the signs on Red Dwarf are also shown in Esperanto (Level / Nivelo is the most common one for the different deck numbers) but there are others

Kieran B

I've always much preferred the American "season", yet for a British shows where they never know if they're coming back or their can be years before the next block of episodes, "series" seems to also make sense. Proving the point - i don't think I like when American shows have a revival decades later and they carry on with the "season" numbers.

Stephen Andrews

Series 2 let's go!
