Comments

That would also put Blake's 7 in the Whoniverse because of Terry Nation.

Troy Convers

That spoiler is answered in S7. And people say this show has no continuity. 😂

Troy Convers

Getting closer now... 😏

Troy Convers

Hi Paula. Noticing your comment about the family snapshots that Lister was showing Cat. Erm. Not Photoshop. Red Dwarf well predates Photoshop. More likely scissors and paste-up jobs that were fixed up and transmitted live to the screens on the set.

Josef Schiltz

Blackadder is an awesome idea! the first season is quite ropey but season 2 onwards is up there with Monty Python. A comedy classic. At just 6 episodes a season why not.

Mordredd

Paula here--I'd be super interested in Blackadder! It's a great suggestion

Time Lord

Not sure if this has already been suggested or not, but I’m going to go ahead and put it out there all the same: The amount of time it takes to watch TWO episodes of DWARF equals the same amount of time it takes to catch a single episode of TREK or new WHO… and if memory serves, you guys HAVE covered CLASSIC WHO “2 at a time” before. Anyway, just throwing it out there… cause a world where you guys catch up and cover more ground by doing two each time would truly be a fun (in the sun sun sun) place to live. 😉

Joshua Lou Friedman

Another show that might be good is Blackadder with Rowen Atkinson and Steven Fry. I think there are 4 seasons, It's another comedy type show.

William Green

Thanks Gals, I rejoined just because of this show. Enjoy!

Robert Biviano

Listen to that intro again - when the heavy organ chords come in, it's actually the tune of the ending slowed down - "Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun"

Bill Roland

Gallifrey Gals Shipwrecked & Comatose?

Mark Ten

I think the first half of this episode does represent the writers trying to find that tricky balance between the setup of incredibly annoying people trapped together driving each other up the walls, and keeping them people the audience want to spend time with. But I think they get to grips with that quite quickly.

Peter Nolan

I suppose Gals Having Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun would be too long.

Peter Nolan

Okay, so the way the future echoes were working: the faster the ship goes, the further into the future they can see. The mirror was a few second out of phase, then the drive room convo is a few minutes out of phase. The cat breaking his tooth is several scenes early. The photograph with the babies is from the end of the episode. Bexley dying is 26 years after the episode, then old Lister is 150-ish years after the episode. Then the shp slows down and those gaps shorten to about a year, two years? after the episode at the end when we see the babies at the end. And the fact that we didn't see Lister with the babies was also a clue that he couldn't die in the episode, because that hadn't happened yet. There's also a spoiler I NEVER noticed before in this episode but I won't say what it is. I don't even know if it's intentional, but if it is it's brilliant.

Chris Neumann

So happy you're enjoying this! There are some crazy situations coming up in this season that I'm sure you'll love. I can quote every line in these episodes from watching them so much LOL

Wade Wallenstein

Without giving too much away the first episode he stumbled upon wound up winning an international Emmy.

Henchman Twenty1

Keep in mind that the first two seasons of TNG were kind of an awkward learning and growing experience that was more miss that hit in my opinion. Once they finally found their footing in season 3 all gears were turning. It's kinda he same here, but definitely worth it!

Henchman Twenty1

I love when new people randomly discover Red Dwarf and have no idea what they're in for.

Bill

Thirteen seasons... what are the chances that this plot comes back? *evil grin, fingers tented*

Bill

Might have already been mentioned but, Cat comes from a whole civilization of cats that evolved from Frankenstein's offspring over the 3 million years They created society, religion, industry, culture, etc..

Bill

TNG Reactions are on hold until the SAG-AFTRA Strike concludes due to Paula being a member of SAG-AFTRA and Katrina hoping to become one in the future.

G0d_Ginrai

What’s happening with the rest of TNG!?

Brett Whittaker

I love that you’re doing Red Dwarf, but I’m still gonna be salty about DS9 lol

Jobard

It's good that you like them now, as seasons 1 & 2 are basically a warm up for what's to come.

Wilss

Anticipated and LOVED the flabbergasted reactions on this one… ahhhh, the realization as to just how BONKERS this show can get! You can already begin to sense here how good the writing is going evolve as well. Most of these seasons aired new while TNG ran here in the states concurrently… and while the latter will always be closest to my heart: I’ve always said that during Series 3-8, you could actually get more science fiction out of a SINGLE EPISODE of RED DWARF… than you would a WHOLE SEASON of NEXGEN combined! I still stand by that… 😉

Joshua Lou Friedman

Would definitely recommend finishing season 3 at least after 2 it really finds its feet and expands, but 1 and 2 still have some amazing episodes

Kieran B

I think you're perceiving these first few episodes much like I did when it first aired (was that really 35 years ago?! 😳). The pacing is a bit hit and miss, but there are enough good gags, and intriguing sci-fi plots, to keep you watching. They kept enough audience interest to get renewed, and went from strength to strength.

Paul Flux

I'm really glad that you're going to react to all of Season 1! I hope that you'll be enjoying it enough and/or getting enough interest on your channel for you to want to continue with the subsequent seasons too. Paula's British best friend is right, it doesn't really hit its stride until Season 3. From there to the end of the original BBC run (Season 6) is Peak Dwarf!

Paul Flux

The two of you discovering Dwarf and liking it, more than makes up for stepping away from Trek for a while. It has seemed to reenergize your YouTube channel and hopefully the Patreon as well. I do hope you continue with season two. The tweaks to the show make it well worth sticking around. Can't wait to see what else you have in store.

Bruce Bromley

I really enjoyed the time-shifted conversation. In particular I appreciate Chris Barrie's performance. He had to hit all the same notes, beats, and pauses twice. A nice piece of acting.

michael mccafferty

It's fun seeing you watch these :-) Hope you'll watch the whole show!

Bret Kay

you are totally right about that blink comparison! I just seen blink a few weeks ago and the scenes have very similar beats. now I think Moffat stole the idea from this episode...

tal goren

OK, the story goes that Sir Patrick Stewart had no idea what Red Dwarf was, caught part of an episode and thought it was a rip off TNG andwanted to call his lawyer to sue... Welp, he began watching and started to laugh and became a big fan!

Mark Ten

Gallifrey Gals Get Smegged! Sorry if it sounds rude, but thats the way it has to be. Trust me on this

Mark Ten

There is also a theory that Red Dwarf takes place in the Doctor Who universe as in a 1989 episode of Red Dwarf in a blink and you miss it cameo The Tardis is seen in the loading bay. I REALLY wish something like Comic Relief had made a full crossover. Sadly we only have fan fiction to guess what the Tardis was doing there.

Rob DW

Haha, so many thoughts! But I'll keep them to just two, both non-spoilery. 1 - It's funny that you say the intro music and the ending music couldn't be more different - they are the same piece of music! One major, one minor. Listen to them back-to-back and you'll see what I mean. 2 - You say that the odd-couple thing is good but it needs something else; generally speaking that may be true, but there is an amazing episode in series 3 that shows just how much you can do with two characters and *amazing* writing. Thanks so much for doing this reaction series, enjoy!

Phil Birkett

Love this show, I'd also recommend the 1981 mini-series of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for another Sci-Fi comedy hybrid. The script for the original radio version got its writer, Douglas Adams, a commission to write for Doctor Who, including City of Death that you've reacted to.

Robert Gendron

Yes more red dwarf. I subscribed to you as soon as a saw you were doing this. If you enjoy season 1 I am sure you will love the rest as season 1 is a little bit weak in places.

Juzzie

Red Dwarf is the sitcom king of coming up with clever sci-fi stuff. Future Echoes is just the beginning.

Scribbles

Ohhhh... just wait....

Jon Hackett

A lot of British comedy mixes drama in with it and a lot of drama has comedy in, often fairly dark

Kieran B

Good reminder

Kieran B

So glad you’re continuing

Kieran B

Just so everyone is aware, they record these episodes in advance. So in this video they were unaware of the responses to the first video.

Firefly24601

Hey, Gals; if you find you enjoy non-Who-related British shows and would like to branch out to non-SciFi content, may I recommend some of my favorites from my childhood watching late-night on PBS: - Mr. Bean (a given, for obvious reasons; hard to think of anyone not knowing Bean) - Are You Being Served? (A bit cringe by today's standards, but can still be quite funny) - Keeping Up Appearances (my absolute favorite British sitcom; remember, it's pronounced "Bouquet", not "Bucket"!) - Fawlty Towers (with John Cleese) - Blackadder (with Rowan Atkinson) - Mystery! (specifically the "Cadfael" segments with Derek Jacobi)
