Lower Decks, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S7ep15

Kat's always asking about what's going on with other people on the Enterprise... Not sure how much they'll like the ending of this one though.

For all the dead Red Shirts we joke about, each one of them had friends.... Friends that had to sit at a table in shock and depression. And I wonder how many knew their friends were going on a mission that could be their last. ...... Then I think about real war and wonder how our species can do this to each other.....

Dan Williams

So brutal, watching them in the conference room as they ask her to go on a mission that is almost guaranteed she won't come back from. They all know it's going to happen...

Dan Williams

It's wild that you have an episode as emotional as this one, and a series as comedic as that, both sharing the same name in the same franchise.

Being a retired senior NCO in the army, I can tell you that parts of this episode felt genuine. I had to write a LOT of evaluations as a senior staff member, and it felt like I had just finished and it was time to write more. We also mentored those under us and spoke up to support them. In a unit, only some see the job others do, so it's up to the soldier in charge to let the other senior staff know what kind of person they are and their abilities. A royal chewing out is probably encountered by everyone in the military. I admit to being on the receiving end and have given two or three. It's not meant to be cruel or bossy (although some are like that) but to test character. I had to stand at attention in front of a colonel's desk while he gave me a largely undeserved profanity-laced chewing for at least 10 minutes straight. I took it because there were bigger things at stake. A couple of months later, when our deployment was over, he shook my hand and greeted me warmly, and said, "I'm so glad you were with us to the end." That's when I knew he was testing my resolve and character. It was never personal. Also, the prospect of having something dangerous come up was always a possibility. I have lost someone in my unit more than once in my career. It's hard, but that's the nature of the job and life. The way you move forward after a tragedy is to honor them by remembering them and being the person they would be proud to have as a friend.

Since throwing around fan-fic ideas is super fun: I came up with a story idea years ago that Wesley Crusher and the rest of Nova Squadron find out that Sito was in a Cardassian prison, and reluctantly come back together to launch a rescue. Meanwhile, Sito and her fellow Bajoran prisoners get word from Joret Dal that the rescue is on the way, and they stage a series of prison riots; basically using their terrorist skills to keep the Cardassian guards off-balance until they can escape or get rescued. We'd get to see what happened to Nick Locarno and Jean Hajar after the Academy incident; Nick is a bitter pilot-for-hire flying an old rust bucket freighter, who hates Wes for getting him expelled (and Wes blames Nick for Josh Albert's death), and Jean is a stodgy officer at a dead-end post whose Starfleet career has stalled. There'd be action, intrigue, and plenty of phaser fights down poorly-lit Cardassian-style corridors (would fit in well with the NuTrek style, at any rate); maybe Wes would bring along Robin Lefler (with a resolution to their previous romance plotline), plus one or two other established characters for good measure. There could also be some sort of tragic redemption arc for Locarno; maybe he dies saving the others at the last minute, or some trope-y silliness like that. Who knows; maybe IDW could do it as a comic book miniseries, or something...

Alexander Caldwell

Agreed; I think a lot of the references in LD would go over Kat's head without watching the other shows (unless she really just goes for it for the humor). Voyager is able to stand on its own with just a tertiary knowledge of TNG and DS9.

Alexander Caldwell

in my personal headcanon, Ensign Sito successfully completed her mission to help Joret Dal return to Cardassia and her death was faked by Starfleet's autonomous intelligence organization Section 31, so they could recruit her as one of their operatives.

Monty Magpie

Lower Decks cartoon is a romance letter to TNG and this is its beginning.

myzeplin

There is a pretty stark divide in the fan base over it. It's right on the Younger Millennial/Gen Z nexus of Super Meta Humor that appeals to some people under 40. There is a lot of tongue in cheek irreverence for Trek on the surface, but at it's core it wants to be a love letter to the fans. The problem is that the show is a comedy, and it's not to be taken seriously...but at the same time it's 'cannon' and wants to tells serious stories. It's really hard to square some of the over the top jokes and situations with the seriousness of other parts of Trek. It's like trying to make a cake and pie at the same time. It wants to be both. That's the thing about genre of this time. IT wants to make you laugh and cry and be taken seriously, but also not seriously. It's wants to be a cult classic but get mainstream success. IT wants to be event television, but be quirky and hipster. Like many properties, Trek is trying to become all things to everyone. Meaning it's trying to have broader appeal to bring in a bigger audience, but in so doing it becomes less meaningful as time goes on. Star Wars and Marvel are experiencing the same problem. The wider broadcast, the less any of it means anything.

Jay Fleming

I haven't seen this episode in years. And I was like in my head I remember Sito from somewhere. When she talked to Picard about the accident, I was like "oh yeah" and then I was like "oh no."

Matt O'Keefe

While I think you'll both enjoy Lower Decks, Voyager is another decent one to watch.

Alisa Loudner

Such a well written episode. All characters were fully realized. And the end gets me every time. There aren't as many things that get me balling my eyes out as the girls do, but this one every time.

Red Claw

Ironically after one of the worst Epiodes with "Sup Rosa" they produced one of the best Star Trek Epiodes. For me it catches everythig Star Trek in general and TNG in particular is all about.

dhollanda

This episode is an absolute gem. A reminder of how good this show could be (which was certainly needed after the last episode :I ). Regarding the intent to bring Sito back, yes when this first aired there were indeed rumors about bringing her on for a DS9 episode, as others mentioned above. That would have fit quite well given the Bajorans had a prominent role on that show, so it's a real shame it never materialized (even more so because it would have been far better than some of the episodes we got in DS9 S2-5).

Jay S

I wouldn't be certain of that claim. Firstly, people's opinions about shows change over time, whether from the simple fact that they themselves change, or that their awareness of a show and how it does or does not work changes, or from otherwise completely unrelated things changing their perspective in other parts of their lives giving them different if not greater insights into a show. Rewatching these episodes with the Paula and Kat have proven that to me, seeing things in a new way or recognising things I hadn't noticed before, sometimes making the episodes seem better to me and other times helping me to see where the ball was fumbled if not absolutely punted. I count myself in the group that has a great sense of nostalgia for TNG, because its how I was first exposed to Trek. I loved it, even through the "interesting" first seasons' episodes. It also means that DS9 and VOY (though DS9 to a lesser extent) also trigger some of that same nostalgia because there's a lot of similarity to the production of those shows. I know there's a lot of people who have DS9 as their favourite Trek while also having VOY as their least favourite, particularly as the styles of storytelling and the stories being told diverged. The newer Treks have obviously been different in a number of ways to the previous branches of the franchise, but I think it'd be overly simplistic to lump them all together with each other: DIS, LD, PIC and PRO are all variations of Trek, and not just because two are live action and two are animated. (I mean even the styles of animation and the types of audiences intended are unique for those two.) Whether or not it was your intention to suggest that the recent Treks are objectively speaking not as good as the Treks of the 90s I don't know. Perhaps I've been burned by seeing and hearing similar comments from others that have been part of mean-spirited attacks on the recent shows and their fans. If its just that you have a preference but are happy for others to like what they like then I have zero problems. Because that's a key part about Trek: everyone's different, and will have different opinions, and there's no issue there because different does not equal bad, if anything its often good. Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. Trek is unique as a franchise because of the various different elements to it, but also because no matter what part of Trek is *your* Trek, no matter the series, the episode, the character, the ship, no matter what... your bit of Trek wouldn't be there for you to enjoy and cherish without some other bit paving the way. Obviously none of the current shows would be around without what's come before, and no singular episode or season of a particular show (with the exceptions of the first of each) happens without the earlier episodes of that series. DS9 and VOY don't exist without TNG. TNG doesn't happen without the popularity of TOS. TOS doesn't happen without the first pilot, The Cage. We never know about the first pilot without TOS. No one part Trek gets to our screens and our hearts without at least one other part happening. I'd make some subtle reference to worlds in the Federation relying on other members for support or all crew members of a starship needing the all other crew members to do their jobs, but I'm sure everyone gets the point.

AJ

I'm not someone who knows all the episodes and their order so when I saw the title I thought y'all were reviewing the cartoon and it broke my brain a bit until I realized! 😅

Ben Chan

The one thing about the Lower Decks animated series that is different from all other new Trek is that it is set in about the same time as TNG/DS9 and Voyager's timeline not in the future or far future as the other current Trek shows are. Which is great because am certain most of us agree that the Berman era of Trek was and is the best era of Trek.

Brad Barter

Oh you two are going to LOVE Lower Decks. I think you can jump to it after TNG without it really spoiling anything. I didn't know about Sito being brought back, that'd be interesting (though I do agree it would have lessened the emotional impact of the episode). I can easily imagine her being the only Bajoran Starfleet officer on DS9 and be kind of torn between two worlds while in this high pressure situation (there could also be an interesting twist where she's on an even keel and helps out Ezri when she's all confused). Also, didn't catch if Kat noticed Alyssa being the "who the fuck are YOU?" non-Crusher back in Parallels. And sorry that your favorite Ensign didn't get to be a bigger player in this episode (or Jae for that matter, she's in the background all the time and never got to do anything).

Chris Neumann

I think you gals would love the Lower Decks animated show. It is very fun.

Thontor

I love this episode. I've only seen a little bit of a few episodes of the cartoon show Lower Decks but it feels very slapstick and nothing like regular Star Trek at all....just my opinion, it has its fans.

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

the toughest part of these reactions is not being able to read u two. I never know if u liked it or not. LOL!!!! All kidding aside, theres something beautiful about a woman expressing her emotions. Maybe not ALL her emotions but these that are on full display...I'd fight a bear for THAT woman

Sal Sanchez

This is one of my all time favorite episodes. I don't know if it's number 3 or number 6 best or whatever, but it is S tier, in tier ranking lingo. I've said it before, but the whiplash you get in season 7 going from an episode like Sub Rosa to Lower Decks (in terms of quality) is insane. This season is so all over the place. I had never heard that story that they deliberately left her fate ambiguous so that they could bring her back. I'm with Paula - now in my headcanon she survived and was rescued. My favorite scene is the one with Worf and the martial arts challenge where he was trying to teach her to stand up for herself. It's such a big character moment for both of them. Her scenes with Picard were also very good. It's hard to remember what I thought when I originally watched it, but this time I was thinking, "Come on, Picard, nobody believes that some young officer was assigned to your ship and you had no idea." Like, of course Picard would be hands on with every crew assignment, it seems obvious in retrospect that he was putting on an act.

R. Chang

What happened is exactly what always happens with any genre. Times change, people change, and tastes change. Just like TNG was a different type of show to TOS, so too are the newer Trek shows different to TNG. In fact, a longer time has elapsed between TNG and Discovery than between TOS and TNG. So it's no wonder the differences are much more glaring.

Firefly24601

Brilliant episode.

Keith Goodnight

I'm with Paula and Kat for the super-happy ending. I my head-canon... I can think of no better cover for the Cardassian to protect Sito than to just launch the escape pod and tell border peeps to destroy it and keep Sito concealed in the shuttle with a low level dampening field and have a relay on the escape pod to project a Bajoran life sign. With operatives possible in the Federation confirming later that Sito was killed means they wouldn't be looking for her in the short term. I think she made it home safe and is in witness protection. Surgically-altered to look human with a name change working as a civilian on Earth, living her best life in Canada, until that Cardassian either leaves Cardassia forever or his cover is blown. Imagine Lt. J. G. Lavell going to earth on leave to visit his Grandfather to celebrate his promotion and morn the passing of his friend. Out and about he sees someone who looks almost identical to Sito. They glance, then holding eachothers' gaze. Sito smiles. Lavell gives a knowing nod. Sito nods back and places her hand on a necklace. Lavell recognizes it as exactly Sito's Bajoran earring (a unique family heirloom). He continues on and Sito returns to help customers she is working with at a small shop in Vancouver....

Christian Rennie

I have always been hopeful that one day a Star Trek series would come along and we'd find out that Sito survived. Her death was one of the most painful losses I've ever seen in a genre show. The actress played her with such life and energy, she came across as so genuine and brave. In one episode she became a fan favorite, and her loss was so unfair. It's the life not lived that hurts the most. When an older character on Trek dies, it sucks but at least we have the comfort of knowing they had a long adventure and that their story has been told. With Sito, it felt like we we're watching a new Picard, or a new Kirk, just about to become someone even more incredible. It's amazing how much a character can affect us. Her loss, was dramatically amazing, and it's one of the best written stories in the history of Trek. Ps - when they announced 'lower decks' and it was announced as a funny animation, I really got upset that they would take the serious tone and nature of this episode and turn it into a joke. I think there are a lot of fans who felt the same way, and probably why a lot of older trekkies have stayed away from that show. The tone of that show is constant irreverence. Watching this in comparison to what they did with the new show almost feels disrespectful. This episode had humor, but it was balanced, connected, not meta and harsh. The concept of the new show has forgotten entirely that feeling of importance and humanity that Star Trek should always have, without being crass and cynical. They've toned down some of the humor of the animation, but it is at it's heart... a comedy with sci fi elements. It's just not what I think of when I think of Lower Decks. Imagine a show in 2023 where it's star trek, but there are no crazy explosions, no fantastic cgi or fx. The plot of the episode is mundane, just characters being themselves. We watch characters play and talk and go to work, except it's a ship in space, and there are aliens. There is drama, but it's mostly just normal human/alien drama. We don't make TV like this any more, people don't have the patience for slow stories, where not a lot happens. People now want violence, graphic if possible, They want sex. They want loud screaming and yelling. They want characters killing each other and doing so to an intense score. That's "sci-fi" now. I'm not sure when it happened, but when you look back at TNG...It's like seeing a different world. What happened? Does anyone really know?

Jay Fleming

"A new romance can blind you? Whatever do you mean?" 😳

Firefly24601

As much as I like the idea that she was out there, somewhere, it would have cheapened this story and it's dramatic impact to bring her back. Its a terrific redemption story and the self-sacrifice of the ending was perfect. This was one of my favorites of this season and I wouldnt change a thing.

Mark Ten

More on the Lower Decks cartoon... like here the senior officers are like recurring characters, and you often see that they're having adventures we don't get to see. Great example, it's not really a spoiler but a thought-dead character comes back and the junior officers don't know how. And they have yet to explain it to the audience.

Joe Concepts

This episode is definitely in my Top 3 of season 7. I’m happy you two loved it as much as I do.

Arek Schneyer

This one is very high on many best of Star Trek lists. There was talk as well of bringing her back for DS9 but they decided against it. They didn't want to diminish this ending. I'm glad they didn't, Trek does have a habit of death not being final. I just started watching the animated Lower Decks myself. The different tone is a bit jarring at first because of the humor but I did warm up to it quickly. I believe both of you would enjoy it.

Bruce Bromley

The resident newbie sure did see that ending coming. Good TV predicting skills.

Joe Concepts

That sounds like a bit of a dark story, but if any Trek show would've tried it it would be DS9. I kind of find this ending preferable to that. Still it would've been interesting to follow up. I do think though that the real point of this was to show that sometimes, people get killed in the line of duty. And this was their way of humanizing one of the usually nameless "redshirt" characters that get killed so often.

Joe Concepts

Idk what it is with Star Trek and giving logical Vulcans fabulus eyeliner haha

Mike

Would love to see GG react to the Lower Decks animated series.

Stephen Kronfeld

The "Lower Decks" animated series works on its own, but is full of references to all versions of Star Trek. It's possible some of those references could include some full on spoilers for things that came before it. Maybe some other folks would remember that better. But it's 30 minutes and lots of fun, and usually manages to pull off some real, exciting Trek moments while still poking fun at the franchise.

Joe Concepts

When this episode first aired I was sad (obviously) but also angry at the ending. You can't tell me that was the only plan that Starfleet intelligence could come up with to get that Cardassian back across the border. Yes, danger is part of the job, but not to die needlessly, which this was. And Picard threw her life away. Her tore her down to test her mettle, then built her back up so there was no way she'd decline the mission. This was one of the few things I'll never forgive him or the show for. After Michael Dorn's character, Worf, joined DS9 I also had an idea for a story that would bring her back, but broken. It would turn out that she was beamed off of the escape pod before the Cardassians destroyed it and Sito was sent to a secret forced labor camp were she was routinely tortured and... abused in the way a female prisoner might be. After the civilian uprising on Cardassia the new government learned of the camp and shut it down and released all prisoners there. The Federation and Bajoran citizens get sent to DS9 where Sito confronts Worf. She blames him and Picard for sending her on the mission. Maybe she has a half Cardassian child now. It's not a happy ending, but neither was this. Also, where is there an escape pod on those shuttles? Unless they have Timelord tech there is NO room!

Henchman Twenty1

Been looking forward to this episode. Can't wait to watch this video
