Sub Rosa, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S7ep14

Welp... We've made it y'all.

It seems there was a little hiccup during the export of this episode. The first few minutes in the reaction the alignment will be a little off but it goes back to normal the moment the reaction starts!

Comments

I fully acknowledge that this is a mockable ep. That said I will never apologize for my love of this episode. It reminds me a bit of Phantom of the Opera, which us my favorite musical.

Carrie Schwent

Had to watch this horribleness. Soooo bad, super creepy. Glad you did it after my birthday instead on on it... Lol

Dan Williams

yikes.

uberelder

When Kat said, "We have a haunted candle," I burst out loud laughing. She didn't know the half of it. Also, Paula's facial expressions are priceless.

Mark Wilson, Department of Burrito Mechanics

As a child I found the episode boring. Now I find it chringe. Progress.

dhollanda

Yes, but did Shepard ever get up to eat??? 😸

Firefly24601

I must admit, I thought the "really bad" episode was still a little way off.

Graham Mills

And Troi sort of encouraging Beverly in this one? I mean, sure you can be progressive and "You do you," etc. But there's no point in life where Troi would say, "Eww, gross. Your grandmother?"

Joe Concepts

13:50 There's the immersion break right there. They're trying to recreate Old World ClichΓ© Scotland, but they're worried about a wee bit of dreich weather. (google the dialect word if you need to) 27:13 Sudden inexplicable low lying mist - fine. Below freezing point socialising - fine. Lack of gravity? Naw, not something we see in Scotland.

Graham Mills

LOL this is the first time i've seen this episode in decades. I literally never re-watch it. I just can't. They freakin' dug up grandma and she comes back to life possessed by her and her granddaughter's lover? I didn't even remember the sexual tones in it because i was so young when i first saw it that they just flew over my head, my god it makes it even worse.

LogicSequence

"Guys. We need another Episode for Season 7 of The Next Generation." "We still have this script for an Episode of a Soap Opera that wasn't green lighted lying around. Lets rewrite it a little and make it into an Episode." "Sure. That'll do."

Red Claw

To be fair to Frakes and Braga, the directors of episodes do NOT get to chose the episodes they'll direct, that is dictated by the schedule, and a writer in a large staffed writers room may get his name attached to a script even if a number of the writers take a pass at it. Season Seven suffers because a lot of the writers that bolstered the show from seasons three to six have left to work on the other Trek shows, leaving Jeri Taylor to become showrunner this season... and I hate to put down a female writer, but recalling some of her Voyager stories... she's willing to write some dumb stuff. One of the actors of a character she's written for decided that their character was bipolar in order to explain some of the inconsistent writing. D.C. Fontana she ain't. But yes, who WOULDN'T want a family candle fuck ghost? -Logline for this episode. Also, Paula doesn't like possession stories, so there's another knock towards DS9 for her. Also, can you IMAGINE Frakes directing his good friend McFadden during that ghost sex? How is that not the most awkward thing in the world for them to talk about?

Nolan

Seems to me like "Mayfair Witches".

Tristan Rose

saw this episode when i was 12 or 13. Loved it because it was about ghost. Only later revisiting tng an adult did I realize she was making love to a ghost.

myzeplin

Yes, this episode is trash...nothing very redeeming about it. The odd part is that it vaguely reminds me of the movie "High Spirits" which had a little bit of a similar plot in part of it and that came out in 1988 (it was on TV frequently when I was a kid)

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

I love the idea of the old Scottish Planet too... it kind of reminds me of Doctor Who, like in the Christmas Carol episode there's just a VIctorian planet so Scrooge would make sense. And as for a "gothic Ghost story," I'm not opposed to that either, but this was NOT it. TV Ratings didn't start until 1996, adnt hey were controversial at the time too.

Chris Neumann

Favorite part of this episode is how you can tell that the actors know its a stupid episode by the way they say the lines, especially Riker saying the fog just rolled in

Pranav Gulukota

Ah Sub Rosa… best way to watch this is drunk and just tear it apart.

Darren Seal

This episode is the best Star Trek episode ever made. More than any other episode, it perfectly captures Gene Roddenberry's hopes for humanity's future. No poverty, no war, no prejudice. Just a candle ghost tricking generations of women into having virtual sex with him. πŸ˜‰

Stephen Kronfeld

Trash, absolute trash. Nuff said.

Pickupthepieces76

I will say some of the best episodes to hear people talk about are the ones that aren't good! I've seen this one dozens of times because I just love Beverly. The Beverly/Picard stuff in this is good, if minor. Gates McFadden of course gives it her all, even when the material is terrible. There could have been a good episode in here, without the ghost sexing all the women in a family. That just kills the whole thing. It's so gross and creepy and comes off as weird that Troi encourages Beverly early in the episode.

DC

Welcome my friends, to the bottom of the barrel. There is no defense of this episode. It's a bad idea, executed poorly, with very little in the way of logic or sense. It's just... weird. I recall never rewatching this episode, and I remember why. It's good to have a bottom, and this episode makes you appreciate Star Trek when it's great.

Jay Fleming

I swear they had a bunch of lame plot ideas that had been kicking around for years and then they said, "Eh, it's the final season. Let's just go with them." At least we have a very good episode coming up next week! Just wipe this one from your mind with a damp cloth and toss it away!

Henchman Twenty1

I recall at the time this originally aired, or even a little before, there were rumblings of plagiarism from the Anne Rice novel "The Witching Hour" (which, full disclosure, I've never read and probably never would have even heard of but for its association with this episode.) Not sure if this was just fannish accusations, or if actual legal action was taken.

Ken Quick

Was waiting for the faces Kat was going to pull during this episode. Wasn't disappointed.

TheHimble

So Grandma's boy toy is making a move on... Cringe worthy much? And then your ex-boss wants to meet your new BF?

Mark Ten

Ok, I remember the episode being bad but somehow I repressed most of the dialogue, holy crap.

Makhiel

It was always a shame that they've mentioned Dr. Selar on numerous occasions since The Schizoid Man but they never asked Suzie Plakson back after K'Ehleyr was killed. She wasn't back until she played a Q in ST: Voyager.

Bruce Bromley

This is another example of the writers revisiting something or someone that was mentioned in the first season. Like Nikolai in "Heart of Glory," Beverly told about her grandmother back in season one's "Arsenal of Freedom." Again, the writers revisiting old character development before the end of the series.

Judge Brehon

There maybe other episodes in the franchise objectively worse but this is by far the dumbest hour of Star Trek. Just becuase an idea is different doesn't mean it's good.

Mike

Well, you've now endured one of the worst episodes of the series and while there are still a few more stinkers, you're past the worst of it. I was thinking about it and, in retrospect, I think that a lot of what is going on in Season 7 is that they knew that the show was ending so they wanted to try a lot of different things. And say what you will about Sub Rosa, it's very different from anything they've done before. The unevenness of Season 7 I think is a result of that sort of experimentation where a lot of it fails (badly in this case) but some of it pays off. I don't know how far they've watched, but one of my all-time favorite episodes is coming up and it is also very different from any previous episode they've done.

R. Chang

DINNA LIGHT THA CANDEL

Jarrod Wild

IIRC, the plot was literally stolen from a Jackie Collins novel.

Philip Abelanet

As an adolescent watching this episode when it first aired, I admit to appreciating at least some of the scenes... But even then I wondered what the hell this was supposed to be. Sci-fi meets cheesy romance novel?

Joe Concepts

Cringy episode for sure

Jonathan Emery

The day has come!

Makhiel

I don't care what anyone says, I still get a kick out of this episode. The sheer wackiness, the angry neighbor with the candle and the undead grandmother - it's like a fever dream (or nightmare lol).

Visible Pixels

Oh this is gonna be sweet...

Graham Smith

You know it's bad when the average IMDb rating is below 5. 4.8 for this episode. πŸ™‚

Hampus Theander

We finally made it to THE episode!...again.

David Brown

IT'S HERE, IT UPLOADED, WE DID IT. THIS GOD AWFUL EPISODE CAN LEAVE ME ALONE NOW -Kat
