An Admiral and his staff are always outside the command structure of the ship he or she is on. He could dismiss a Captain, but command would fall to the First Officer. If the First Officer refuses, then the same would happen, but whoever is 3rd would be in command. Also, when the Admiral began giving orders directly to the crew, I believe thats also a violation. There can only be one captain on a ship and an Admiral, even on the flagship of the fleet, is always a passenger. If he wants to give orders, he asks the Captain to pass his wishes on.

Trek has always been about envisioning a near-ideal human future where scarcity, violence, bigotry, oppression and any other form of suffering on Earth have been eliminated and people have the ultimate freedom to choose how to live. The old joke is that Trek is “space communism.” Despite this, there’s a small, yet dedicated contingent of right-wing Trek fans who appear to gravitate toward the franchise for no apparent reason other than it’s a cool show with space lasers and weird-looking aliens. If anyone was that offended by what you said that they would stop watching or supporting GG, good riddance.

The Federation will give them the Story of a rogue operation with a formal apology and an assurance to stay committed to the treaty. Will the Romulans believe that? Of course not. But that does not matter. They have to choices: Abandon the treaty or stick to it. And right after the Federation demonstrated that they could have an advantage in a field where the Romulans believed to be on top, they will also stay to the treaty. And wasting resources on spying on the federation about their supposed cloaking technology.

2023-04-26 07:27:33 +0000 UTCHeck, I DID erroniously vote for Space Seed when I thought they might check out the movies, and I too don't think they should watch Picard. Nevermind all the shallow fanservice stuff does NOTHING to counter the way this new Era of Star Trek handles character dymamics, dialogue, plot, narrative and interpersonal interaction if a FUNDAMENTALLY different, and dare I say, more pedestrian way that does little to make it stand out from TV typical of this era, a trend that DOES INDEED continue through season 3 (i.e, it still has all the flaws of the previous modern entries, just dressed up in cosplay of a 90s series) but, it also requires extensive knowledge of two of the three series that followed immediately after TNG. One of the main characters is a character from one of those shows, and there's a whole arc where knowledge and context from DS9 is required too. For them to watch Picard S3 is to commit to another 14 seasons of Star Trek prior to it. People are getting far too swept up in the emotions the just past season manipulated them into to think clearly and logically about just what it is they are suggesting the Gals commit to.

2023-04-26 05:39:18 +0000 UTCI tend to cut some of the badmirals some slack in that their job is mired in the big picture, "the greater good" and strategizing, to the point they lose sight of the more humanized aspects of their decisions. They all are doing these things that they think is right, even if they ultimately are wrong. This is why I like admiral Neyachev, despite being so curt and abrasive, is because she has an admiral's personality, but her morals aren't as degraded, even if she's not always right. Also, how interesting how Starfleet was developing a phasing cloak, meanwhile 2 years ago, the Romulan's attempt to develop the same thing that results in Geordie and Ro getting to experience a more ethereal experience.

No spoilers, I would suggest watching S1 and 2 on your own because it's important for the story and crucial for some characters (and I also think they're pretty good! I avoided the talk until now, but I guess there's unsurprising online hate) ... then do video reactions to PS3 - I for one LOVED all the fan-service stuff, but it was mostly done in service to a great story! (and the billion easter eggs peppered throughout don't get in the way of the story)

Just like it could have been suggested for ST:TNG as well. Think back how inferior seasons 1 & 2 were compared to now. And also think on what you would have missed out on... like Tasha Yar, Data being recognized as being sentient, seeing how Georgie sees through his visor, and other character-building episodes. IF you decide to react to Picard, I personally suggest watching it form the beginning, warts and all.

The same people saying that are probably the same ones who voted for Space Seed in the TOS poll, completists who don't understand what you're doing here. If you're only going to watch up until First Contact and not watch the other films and shows, there's no point jumping back in on something as "remember when?" as Picard season 3...

The other possibility is that maybe not all starships got new uniform styles all at once if they're at a starbase (or do they replicate clothes themselves?)

The illegal cloaking device seems to have been a rogue operation by the Admiral and some small number of others; but the Romulans aren't going to believe that. They're going to exploit "The Federation violated the treaty!" to the hilt. Which means that by decloaking in front of the Romulan ship, Picard transformed an internal criminal matter into an international incident with grave implications for the peace of the entire quadrant. The D&D term "lawful stupid" comes to mind.

In fact, it's shockingly one of only TWO Romulan apparances in TOS. The Gals have already watched the first one.

2023-04-25 20:06:23 +0000 UTCI don't know if this is true or not, but I think there may have been plans at some point for Riker to get demoted to Lieutenant Commander as a result of this episode. The action figures of the TNG cast released for Star Trek Generations, which was in pre-production at this point in the season and started principal photography immediately after TNG wrapped, were somewhat infamously based on a uniform design that was only briefly used during shooting (they ended up using existing uniforms for the finished film). The Riker figure's cardback erroneously refers to him as a Lieutenant Commander, even though his rank pips are for full Commander, and he is still a Commander in the film (that's not a spoiler, as it has absolutely no bearing on the plot). In my multiverse head-canon (reinforced by "Parallels", of course), I like to think that in the reality where they used these uniforms in Generations, Riker was demoted and lost later opportunities for his own command. 😁 The Generations action figure line is such an interesting relic of that era; in the height of Trek production up to that point (TNG's final season, DS9's second and third seasons, Generations, and production of Voyager's first season all happened in 1994), I suppose some quality control issues were bound to slip through the cracks. BTW, great episode; one of my favorites.

Whenever an admiral shows up, something shady is going down. Recently I've heard them referred to as 'Badmirals'. That is why they are my favorites episodes.
